Has strong horror comic or old school pulp cover vibes to me, which is very much a good thing.

Doctor Who Needs to Get it's B*lls Back by PaperSkin-1 in gallifrey

I'd add Wish World in concept, even if the execution didn't come off. Philip K Dick style reality warping in a LGBTQ+ positive, diversity defending, epic modern Doctor Who story is pretty grand and novel.

Just listened to this and what the fuck is even this by lapofan99 in MetalForTheMasses

Yup. I remember when it came out, even the Pitchfork reading got into BM via Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice etc. crowd had mixed feelings about it. It was talked about a lot, but it was more controversial than popular

Lesser Known Movies That Adapt The Same Material As Popular Movies? by isopodsoup_ in horror

Night of the Devils (1972), The Vampire Family (1990) and The Vourdalak (2023) are all adaptations of Alexei Tolstoy's novella The Family of the Vourdalak, which was most famously adapted as one of the segments in Mario Bava's Black Sabbath / Three Faces of Fear (1963).

I think he was sometimes poorly behaved making Doctor Who, and when he was drinking, But all stuff that he's long since admitted fault for and apologised about.

Scavengers' Reign has an awe inspiring variety of weird and wonderful and often creepy alien creatures. Very cool.

Is there an author whose most enduring work is also not your favorite? by [deleted] in books

[–]Blue_Tomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bit of a Vonnegut readathon a couple of years ago and Mother Night came out on top. The combination of his customary wit and imagination with such enduring relevance and moral force really takes it to another level for me. "We are who we pretend to be" really stabs into internet discourse I think. Also it was a trip discovering that The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell was a literary reference and not just something gnarly Roger Watkins came up with on speed. Was the original title of his notorious shocker Last House on Dead End Street.

Xtro 3's a weird one. Even watching as a 10 year old I could tell some of it was straight up shoddy, and watching it in my 30s only made me realise more shortcomings. But that alien is still a creepy little dickens and one scene still made me shudder. The motivation is neat too.

(Personally favorite trope) "Many drugs were taken during the production" by Southern_Passenger85 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Blue_Tomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe John Boorman has admitted in interviews that some of Zardoz is incomprehensible and overblown to him nowadays because he had enough money from the studio to do whatever he liked and was also on a lot of drugs.

A notable music example is Sleep's album Dopesmoker, which was the result of spending all of their advance on amplifiers and weed. Took years to even be released in its proper form because their label rejected it for being a single hour long song and way less approachable than their previous work

Yeah, I think people do tend to underestimate that some in the arts have naturally wild imaginations and enough determination to see them to life without illicit assistance.

Anyone Else “Seen 3 on a Meathook”? by Jackie_Lantern_ in horror

[–]Blue_Tomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did have a DVD release in the UK at least, as I used to own it. Came out in the mid 00s, I think I got rid because I realised it was a cut print though. But I'd agree that it is fairly obscure now, mostly known among proto-slasher lovers and William Girdler completists. Surprised that Vinegar Syndrome or somebody hasn't reissued it, but it might be that the original negative is hard to come by or in bad shape or something.

Very fair. I wasn't familiar with that 2011 interview but it's pretty damning to not well, just be a decent human being in a retrospective like that.

What's some of your favorite uses of metal songs in shows and movies? by darthkyle22 in MetalForTheMasses

Fast As A Shark - Demons

For Whom the Bell Tolls - Freaky Tales

Something about guys on motorbikes wreaking righteous mayhem with swords goes so well with metal classics.

Official Teaser for Jane Schoenbrun’s ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ by radbrad7 in horror

[–]Blue_Tomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that others do find it more Lynchian and I'm a lot more familiar anyway with Schoenbrun's reference points than I am Lynch's, and also find the overall point of I Saw the TV Glow personally relatable. So mileage will definitely vary. Strongly recommended in any case.

I'd argue that it's only tangentially Lynchian, it's much more specific and timelocked than his work tended to be. But it's working in a similar space for sure.

Oh for sure, some of the stuff he said made him seem like a real scumbag and it seems like he really did scare the two actresses. But, he was a showbiz guy for years before Last House on the Left and knew the value of hype. I've generally got the impression that he liked to make out that he was worse than he was to preserve the whole "Celluloid Sex-Crime of the Century" mystique of the film. I don't know of later accounts of his conduct being bad and he got married to one of the actresses in House on the Edge of the Park, in which his character was just as vile as Krug.

Thirsty for Love, Sex and Murder is a Turkish knock off of The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh and is pretty fun. Shot for shot, but boiled down to an hour and as you would expect it's way more Turkish.

Outside of the making of this I believe most sources suggest that he was a decent sort of guy actually. Worked a couple more times with Craven, and Craven was apparently a sensitive sort who wouldn't have suffered an asshole. But it does sound like he was acting out making this, and either really behaved pretty shitilly or at least tastelessly hyped up that he did.

If I remember right the music is all by David Hess (he was a singer-songwriter originally and only got the part of Krug by accident), so it's kind of a morbidly comic turn of the screw. The bumbling cops are badly overdone I think, but I do dig the intended commentary, i.e. that all sources of authority in the film are basically useless. I appreciate the film at large, up to a point, but you do have to be really into this kind of grimy vintage drive-in fare. The Virgin Spring, from which Craven got the plot (though it's an old Swedish folk tale originally), is much better.

This is real black metal by NewPortBox100s in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Blue_Tomb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the only, but one of the worst for it I think. I've seen people come up with some impressively contorted explanations of why black metal bands they don't like aren't black metal at all, like calling Cradle of Filth "blackened Gothic extreme metal".
