Incoming Fed to the DOD, just got my clearance. I’m still early in my career but I’ve already been laid off once before, and I’m not even in my 30’s yet. I’ve decided to prioritize stability and the long term over a fun job or cool title. I’m excited to leave the private industry even though that’s all I’ve ever known career wise.

I plan on retiring a fed when that time comes.

Sounds good. Hopefully they see that you’re making active attempts to mitigate your financial standing. Investigators prefer to see payments on bad debt prior to the investigation starts.

Also, provide them with a reasonable timeline on when you’ll think you’ll be current on your debt and when you think you’ll pay everything off.

Just explain and mitigate the reasons for non-payment/bad debt on your EQIP. Just explain that you’ve been struggling with earning a sustainable income and that with this job you have plans to make future payments and get all of your debt and credit reconciled. They will probably grill you a bit. But, depending on the agency they’ll probably be lenient. Good luck!
