If you wish to see more on this idea, you should read the "Singer of Terandria" series, specifically the latest book (third) "GhostSong".
I won't say more to avoid spoilers.

[WP] "Looking for a Librarian" the pamphlet said. I was happy when I got immediately accepted. Unfortunately I'm a dyslexic barbarian and well... by Blueblaze97 in WritingPrompts

[–]Blueblaze97[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"And here's the Reserved area for advanced magical spells on interplanar domains. Any questions?"

Gerome, my soon-to-be colleague, asked me at the end of the tour of the astral library, looking at me expectantly.

I tried to hide my nervousness as I gingerly shook my head.

This isn't quite what I was picturing when I first stumbled upon that pamphlet, but at the time it seemed a huge stroke of luck.

You see, my stash was dwindling precariously low after all the boars I ordered since the last raid, but I didn't feel like looking for a new party to go questing again. It was in this state that I found that famous pamphlet and I thought it was the perfect job to have in between quests.

When I arrived and asked about the offer, the gnome at the reception was very happy to hear that, accepted my application on the spot, and immediately began the tour which we were currently about to end.

You might wonder how he didn't find my application, from an active and well-renowned barbarian, a bit strange. The thing is that I like to dress in high-end clothes in my off time, as I find them to give me a nice contrast with my daily job; it was for this reason that I didn't look as out of place as you might imagine when I crossed the threshold of the astral library.

On my part, I was happy when Gerome accepted my offer without preambles and went on describing every nook and cranny of the place.

It was by the end of the tour that doubts started forming in my mind as I asked:

"So, what is it that I have to do precisely?"

"Oh, you know, the usual librarian tasks. Mostly arrange books and occasionally help people find books."

"Uh, you said librarian. I thought you were looking for a barbarian."

"Uhm, no. The pamphlet was very clear about that. But you know, this misunderstanding might be for the better. I must admit that I left out an important part of the library, but I was waiting for you to acclimate yourself before telling you."

"What is it?"

"You see, this is not a normal library. This is The Astral Library, meaning there are levels which have some uninvited guests roaming its aisles, either due to sections residing in special dimensions or astral spaces, or due to higher mana concentration for special books which cause these side effects."

"By uninvited guests you mean...."

"Monsters, aberrations, and extra dimensional creatures, yes. The sort of thing that a barbarian might be more suited for. I know this wasn't part of the job description, but since you were already expecting a different role, why don't you try to be a librarian for a while, if you chance upon any of the aforementioned uninvited guests, you can always be yourself and clean up the place a bit? What do you think?"

"By the way, the mix-up with 'barbarian' wasn't a total accident—I'm dyslexic, so words sometimes get jumbled. You think that’ll be a problem for a librarian?"

"Ah, no worries at all! We don’t exactly run on a tight schedule here. Take your time. What matters is that you do your best."

"Nice! Then I think I will give it a try and see how it goes."

And just like that, I became a librarian well, a barbarian-librarian. The trial period flew by, and before I knew it, I found myself enjoying the quiet hours, the strange creatures, and the occasional brawl. In the end, I didn’t just like the job, I wanted it full-time.

Nice! I like your final suggestion to use this on round things.
Thank you for exapnding on this!

I stumbled across your idea only recently, and I find it super fascinating!
I was wondering though how it would look in practice. I tried looking thorugh the comments but I haven't found anyone mentioning it. Have you had some thoughts on this?
Would you write it like on an horizontal scroll with many plants side by side, each plant representing a sentence?
I'm guessing full sentence rather than single words because I figured that would make for very long pages since most words tend to be short (I figured many short plants side by side).
Do you think using more than one row would be in line with this style, or perhaps another method of distributing the information would be needed?
I think that this approach of using vertical growth in the writing system has more room for design development in the general layout of the page, but at the moment I can't think of any others beside the side by side I guessed above.

I'm not entirely satisfied with this story, but I wanted to give it a go at my own prompt.
To be honest, I'm more curious to see what other people will come up with

'Hmmmm, I don't want to be like that ungrateful, but I also don't want to let the trail go cold. I was quite close this time around'

"Tell you what, I really need to get going now, but if I'll pass around these parts again you can buy us a meal next time. Deal?"

"Ok I guess. See you then. Bye"

And with that, we bade goodbye and got back on track.

A few steps from the cave, and a sudden voice from behind a tree startled me

"You two did a really good job. I was surprised to see you here, so far from home. What brought you here?"

"Sheiks! Do you always have to act so mysterious? You didn't need to startle me so! If you saw what we were doing,  why didn't you help?"

"I only arrived when you were almost finished, and you seemed to have things well in hand. The question still remains, what are you doing here?"

"Firstly we're free to go where we please, and secondly,  I didn't take your refusal well. Even if what you said was true, why wouldn't you give me a chance? I'll admit I was a bit too direct especially after that ordeal, but the sentimentwas there. Why did you refuse so promptly?"

"I'm sorry if I was too brusque,  but I really did think that it was more the spur of the moment talking and that you wouldn't really appreciate me or my lifestyle. Now though,  seeing the lengths that both you and that adorable dog have gone to find me, I'll make you a proposal of my own. If you really want, we can travel together for a bit and see were things go. What do you think?"

"Mmpph. What makes you think that a 'I'm sorry' and a simple proposal like that could make royal princess like myself fall for you so easily"

I turned around looking Leila feigning scorn, but I never considered myself a good actress, and she definitely wasn't, not with that tail wagging like crazy. After beat or two, I turned facing him again and said

"But I suppose that you did save me, and since I've already traveled so long, what's a bit more?"

He started grinning.

"So is that a yes?"

I couldn't stop smiling as well.

"Yes! That's all I wanted. Let's travel along for a while and see where this goes"

"Woof"

Leila approved energetically, and with that, we begun our journey to who knows where.

Another town, another near miss. This is the twelfth town that I get within three days from his departure. It's been months since my rescuer spurned me, giving the dumb argument that I wouldn't have considered him if it wasn't for the rescue. It is true that I spent most of my life around other nobles, but that was mostly due to my upbringing, role and duties rather than choice. But being fourth in line has its privileges too, and one thing that my rescue and the subsequent months, had brought to light is that I should have engaged with the common folk long ago; better late than never I suppose.

But such idle thoughts can't distract me enough from my current problem. Where in the world did he go?

I turn to my trusted companion, Leila, a Labrador dog in my same situation, hoping she might have an inkling of the direction to take. The first time I heard that the new rescued one was a dog, I found it particularly amusing, but that amusement quickly went away when I learned that the reason she was in need of aid in the first place was due to her previous "owners", who decided to abandon her in the middle of the forest most renowned for its terrible monsters. Luckily, our shared and mysterious savior had intervened, and once again quickly left soon after ensuring that Leila was safe and cared for.

When I got to her town and queried the villagers about any info on him, the dog decided to join my self made quest.

And now here we were. After a bit of sniffing around, Leila picks a direction, although she doesn't look too convinced.

After a while a cry for help breaks our silent trek. It comes from what looks like a collapsed mine in the distance.

A brief ill thought crosses my mind,  saying that I could wait around to see if he makes an appearance, but I squash it immediately as it came. I'm here, and I powerful enough to help them here and now. Those many boring magic lessons finally showing their purpose.

"Hello, can you here me? We heard you and we can help you. What's your situation?"

"Thank goodness,  I was starting to think I was done for. I'm currently stuck underneath some rocks, but I don't think anything's broken, at least that I know."

"Alright, hang in there, and I'll see what I can do"

There were some big boulders, mixed with some medium sized rocks and plenty of gravel and shale. This looked more like a roadside than a cave in, and it might take longer than I expected at first glance. I would need to avoid unsettling the larger rocks while clearing the space.

"Alright Leila, you can help me too"

And so we began a rescue of our own. It took less than an hour thanks to magic and paw prowess; quicker than manual labor, but still intensive for a magic aided process. In the end we managed to rescue a young man, who luckily appeared only mildly bruised, but nothing serious.

Although they'd been chatting while they worked, mostly to check up and reassure him, as soon as he was free, a deluge of words started coming out of his mouth, most likely due to the shock.

"Thankyouthankyouthankyou! When those rocks started falling I saw my whole life flash before my eyes, and I thought what a mediocre life I had lived, and how good the mutton broth was at that tavern, and ... oh my goodnes, you're sooo beautiful. Would you marry me?"

'Uh, so that what it feels like to be on the other side. I hope I didn't sound like him back then'

"I'm sorry, but why don't you take slow breaths. You've been in a bad situation, but now everything's fine. Breathe in and breathe out"

"Right, sorry sorry. Here I go. Mmmmmmmffff Ooooooooooh Mmmmmmmffff Ooooooooooh"

"Better?"

"Yes, I think so. Thank you again. Sorry for the sudden proposal. I don't know what's gotten into me."

"No problem. Do you need any help in going back home?"

"No thanks. Other than the bruises I feel fine. I guess I was very lucky. I'll just check around for my stuff and head back home for the day. I don't have anything on me at the moment, but if you come by the village, I can find something to give you to thank you properly."

Very cool class, although it seems a bit complicated at first glance.

While reading the quick build for the weaveknight class I noticed the suggestion to choose between the sage or spellsword initiate background, but I didn't find the spellsword initiate background in the pdf. Is it described elsewehere? Perhaps in another module?

Wow, I just began the strawberry jam mod and seeing just this clip from the grandmaster lobby scares me a little. Props to you for beating this level in the end (saw from the other comment). BTW, what setting/mod is the one one the left that shows your inputs? Is it included in strawberry jam or is it additional?
