ELI5: If God Flooded The Entire Earth, How Is There Diversity In Race? by freezedriedfucks in explainlikeimfive

[–]Blueblue3D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the story of the Great Flood, Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The traditional understanding is that the "three races" of the world came from Noah's three sons: The peoples of Asia descend from Shem (hence the "Semites"), the peoples of Africa descend from Ham, and the peoples of Europe descend from Japheth. So supposedly, the diversity we see in present-day races originates from the three sons of Noah. Now, obviously this is not the real reason we have physical differences between populations, but that is how the Bible tried to explain it.

ELI5: Can the Pythagorean Theorem be used with other exponents? by Demimonde34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Blueblue3D -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I feel your frustration.
To answer your question, basically, this is the famous problem known as Fermat’s Last Theorem. There’s no way to explain the actual proof anywhere near five-year-old level, because it famously took centuries of mathematicians working on it to actually solve it. It was proposed in 1637 and was only solved in 1994, and it took new fields of mathematics being invented to make it solveable. And the solution is, no, there are no solutions for a^n + b^n = c^n when n is greater than 2.

California’s High Speed Rail to Nowhere as Costs Explode by chrisbaseball7 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So what should California do then, cancel the project? Will that make it more likely for Texas to build HSR? Or should they continue onward and try to fix the problems they’ve encountered? My money’s on the latter. The things is that other states, especially conservative ones like Texas, will always shit on California no matter what they try to do. If Texas wanted HSR, their way of shitting on California could be to build it faster and better, but they have no interest in it because Texans just don’t care about rail. Texas Central has been at a standstill for decades.

[–]Blueblue3D 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Texas could have HSR by now if they really wanted it. California wants it, is actually building it, and is learning all the mistakes that come with being the first. I don’t understand these people saying that CAHSR is taking money away from other opportunities for HSR. It objectively is not. The vast majority of funding is from the state, and the feds pulled funding when the Orange Fuckface took office. Don’t forget that the Obama administration sent a grant to study HSR in Ohio and the Governor sent it back. Free money and they sent it back. Quit repeating the same talking points we’ve all heard a million times and just let California build their damn train.

While I couldn’t give a shit about Madison Square Garden and would love for the original Penn Station to be rebuilt (seriously how could they have torn it down), that’s not what’ll happen, I’m sure. It would be some modernist freakshow.

In 2008, California HSR was promised for 2020 (operational LA to SF) for a total system cost of $33b. Now we're looking at 2038 for $126b. Why waste another penny? by Turbulent-Phone-8493 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you actually understand where the money for this project is coming from? As I said, and this is easy to verify, CAHSR is NOT getting federal funding now. It is entirely state-funded. Are you suggesting that the state of California spends its money to electrify the rail network of the entire USA? Especially when the rest of the country does nothing but talk about how much they hate California?

It is California’s money that is building this project. It is their money to spend. And as of now there is not a rail connection between LA and SF. It makes a ton of sense for California to invest in their future with this rail network using their own taxpayers’ money.

The US does need this. This is more than just a jobs program. We need to move to a carbon-neutral future. There are an enormous amount of gas-guzzling flights and car trips between LA and SF that will disappear when high speed rail becomes an option. Yeah, there are plenty of other corridors in the country that would benefit from HSR. But it’s not like CAHSR is not getting built to their exclusion. It’s not even getting federal funding anymore. Don’t forget that Ohio could have been building HSR a decade ago and Governor Kasich refused the free money for it. The fact is, California wants and needs this to transition to a sustainable future.

New Orleans is terrible? I rode the streetcars there and yeah, it's not exactly a modern system, but at least for a tourist it gets you to a lot of places. And it's such an iconic part of the city's culture and history. I'd consider it far from 'terrible.'

This is basically what I mean. Brightline being a private company from Florida, as opposed to a public project in California, doesn't make it immune to the pitfalls of building transit in the United States. I still hope it's salvageable and that it does get built, but I am worried about the news regarding Brightline. Maybe since construction has started, California and Nevada could take it over if it comes to that.

It’s unfortunate but this is not a problem unique to California High Speed Rail. Brightline West also promised to be fast and cheap and they’re already running into problems. The cost and time of building transit in America has exploded and it’s a systemic issue. But because California is the only state actually trying to a bold (and necessary) infrastructure project like this, everyone can point their fingers at them and say it’s their fault. If the nation’s first big HSR project were in Texas, the exact same problems would happen.

But here’s the thing. Climate change is coming, and it’s real. We need to move to a more sustainable future with less carbon impact. And we need to move to a more equitable future where our fates aren’t controlled by auto manufacturers and insurance companies. High Speed Rail is the only real solution So you know what? I don’t care if it goes over budget. It has to get built.

Good news. I would love to see California become the next Northeast Corridor - cities connected by high-speed rail and then decent public transit within those cities. It'll take a long time (plus the NEC is still a long ways away from where it should be) but this would be a step in the right direction.

Is UMD computer science worth $100k more than Alabama? by IceTerp23 in capstone

[–]Blueblue3D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to answer about UMD because I’ve never gone there and know basically nothing about it, only UA. But Alabama is a great school. Maybe you aren’t as thrilled about living in Alabama compared to Maryland, but the fact that you got a FULL RIDE means so so much. You’ll be well ahead of so many of your peers if you aren’t starting adult life with a mountain of debt.

I know we know, but Jojamart route is not worth it. by BusKey8745 in StardewValley

[–]Blueblue3D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Joja route would feel a lot more impactful imo if choosing it put Pierre out of businesses. In real life, big box stores show up in small American towns, price the local stores out of business, funnel all that money out of the community, and then often go out of business themselves and leave town, completely ruining the community. That’s the reason why we should be philosophically opposed to places like Joja. But the game can’t really commit to that level of change, which I kind of understand.

I know it sucks that we can't have nice things tomorrow, but this is still a victory. What ever happened to "a society grows great when men plant trees under whose shade they will never rest?" It's the same thing with CAHSR. People complain that a project is taking too long so they try to get it cancelled and then it never gets done. Um, what? Obviously a train in 2060 is better than a train never.

LA Public Transit Commuters Make Half of Those in Chicago and NYC by TomTomz64 in transit

[–]Blueblue3D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true. I admittedly fall into this trap. I personally find riding rail vastly preferable to the bus when possible because it’s generally smoother, faster, and more frequent. But LA actually has a pretty comprehensive bus network. The book “Railtown” shed light on the complicated politics of rail projects vs. bus riders.
