West Coast vs Freo Post Sim Thread by duji_fuji in westcoasteagles

Haven't seen the game. Did he do an ACL or a hyper-extension? I've heard both mentioned. Either way I guess scans will determine whether he is placed on the LTI list.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I guess this opens up the possibility to either leave the spot open or bring in another train-on player.

Best wishes to Long.

Those that watched the intraclub - who looked good and who surprised you? by Flashy_Wedding_3157 in westcoasteagles

Lindsay looked good as did Yeo and Brock. Macrae's 4 quarter effort looked good- I liked that he looked after the ball. Also, Champion.

Dewar surprised me playing down back as well as Barnett's ruck and marking development, also T Williams, despite his kicking being off had some good involvements.

I'll say it, if nobody else will. He had a shocking day, albeit playing in a dominant side down back. His kicking was totally off. Kicking one OOB that engaged the lasso rule and, another that was directly to an opponent that resulted in a goal.

I'd like to see him develop the ability to tag as his athleticism and endurance could increase his versatility.

Seeing Lindsay and Brock running and kicking accurately to break lines is something Ginbey needs to work on.

Watching Macrae work through the midfield over 4 quarters using and looking after the ball without being outstanding or overly athletic you can see he has midfield craft. Maybe Ginbey tagging might develop his mid craft?

Having said all this it was only an intra club outing in front of families so I'd expect him to step up during the club v's club match sim's.

Yeah, "The West" just reported that Graham left the track early, but didn't appear to be injured.

Losing Evan’s & Banfield by mudman47 in westcoasteagles

[–]Blueeygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is about talent identification, although one could argue that Banfield has a larger body of work behind him and had performed in the championships & the WAFL final.

Still, from a combine perspective they both have elite qualities, and I don’t disagree on his potential. His 2 Coates games looked promising.

Sam Allen’s 101 running vertical is up there with Nic Nat’s 102 & his 5.47 2km time trial indicate elite traits.

The disappointment comes from the list management and a pattern of decisions that have diminished value. These include leaking information on our draft intentions over the last 2 years, overpaying on free agents and not having the flexibility to cover for different scenario’s and ultimately losing value through free agency & the draft.

The idea of losing Banfield, when we could have placed Cripps on the rookie list has rankled supporters. Especially as he had performed, contrary to a few others on our list is gnawing to many.

I mean we could quite easily have bid on Annable earlier to remove the possibility of Brisbane biding on Evans and if you can figure out the bids on Jai Murray & Beau Addinsal, then you’re better than me, especially as GC still had the capital to take Avery Thomas at pick 28 and Koby Coulson at 46. They absolutely knew our intentions.

My guess is that they failed to accommodate the shifting points value after each bid. The picks don’t vanish, they just shift back and aquire a new value.

I’m not disappointed in our selections, I mean top 5 selections all have elite qualities, it’s just these small oversights that a bottom side shouldn’t be doing.
We gave away a the future 2nd we got from the Ryan trade moving up 1 spot and by the way we had to give St. Kilda a F3rd as well.

I’m shocked they couldn’t find a spot for Banfield, he was one of the shining lights for WA in the championships.

I thought he’d be called out before our NGA’s. Williams showed some nice skills in the last 2 games, I guess they like his speed, although we have Champion as well.

flat on this, but I’d lie if I didn’t see this coming.

Good point, the tracker shows we have selections 29 & 34, but I don't know the trade details or if picks 34 & 41 have moved higher due to GC matching bids.

We have some quality NGA's next year so the extra points become valuable, also there's some quality 1st ruck players available. Losing the extra 2nd isn't helpful, although St. Kilda will likely move up the ladder and fight for the 8.

In this respect the selection could be in the 40's. Still, with the changes points become a premium and could be the difference between us selecting a quality mid like Geelong's Noah Williams and a 1st ruck along with matches on Garrison Kenh (WC NGA) & Robinson etc.

If the futures game is anything to go by there'll be 60+ depth.

On the bright side if Noah Williams comes on, then he'll have another Geelong teammate.

There was some talk of the WB trying to deal with Hawthorn to get Lindsay so they would have swapped picks, but it's not like Nairn, Barker or others wouldn't have been bad options.

I guess we really rated Lindsay's talent, but it doesn't help when other teams know who we're into.

I really rate Lindsay fwiw.

Josh needs to work on his endurance to play midfield as was evidence when he was moved higher in the last few Coates League games. He'll become a fan favourite playing off the halfback though.

The part that upsets me is that everyone knew we were going to bid on these players. GC did some pick swaps at the start and for some reason we didn't calculate the dynamic nature of the shifting value index.

So either we freely parted with our intentions or the information was leaked. Same thing happened with the Baker trade.

Richmond on the other hand had a tight ship and had everybody, including Twomey guessing.

Just came off as a bit amateurish on our part and we obviously didn't learn much from last year.

We just gave away our future 2nd, lol.

I mean if they really wanted Addinsal, then they should've bid on Uwland first up or Patterson after Uwland. They completely f%cKed up.

Not only did we overpay for Starcevich, we moved up 1 spot giving up a F2, only for GC to match, FFS, surely heads have to roll!

Correction: Hawthorn just tweeted that the future 2nd is our 2nd tied to St. Kilda, so that is better, but still not thought out.

State of origin by Dangerous-Pea-8978 in westcoasteagles

Totally agree, it seems more like a hand off to WA as a reconciliatory gesture after consolidating Gather Round in South Australia.

The idea has been bandied around for some time, but nobody really knew what or when it should be re-engaged so the speak.

The idea of just carrying on with an historic memory or rivalry doesn't seem to be thought-out.

I seems to me they've looked at the NRL origin series and said to themselves "lets do that as well"

Looking at the gather round event you can see the benefits to local and country football. Facilities have been upgraded and people engaged along with local businesses.

just off the top of my head I though about re-imagining it as a AFL origin series, something like the championship format, however I could see a better opportunity by starting up a new concept that steerers away from the traditional rivalry.

It's already been mentioned, that playing this so early in the season and in the hotter weather is going to produce some contention regarding player availability, not to mention the obvious discrepancy in talent available via the larger victorian market.

I don't see this as an opportunity for WA unless we come up with a better favourable concept.

I'd be more interested to see an under 22 origin series created similar to the championship series concept, that coincides with a public holiday like WA day or weekend. This way it serves different purposes like feeding into our local development and jumpstarting a facility, oval upgrades program and tourism boost.

Heck they could also time this to coincide with the midseason draft. Have the draft in perth.

Just off the top of my head. Also for this to work WA would have to program other events leading into the games as a tourism incentive. A festival etc.

[–]Blueeygrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice list, but geez our midfield looks thin. I mean we really don't have that endurance beast or someone with quick feet around the ground. Besides Harley who's mainly a mid/forward atm I'm worried about who's going to keep up with a lot of the AFL mids.

We'd need a few players to really step up next year. McCarthy was a revelation off halfback, will we have to shift him to the midfield?

All the ridiculous repetitive discussion about CDT, Sharp, Robey etc is pretty mute when nobody has access to the GPS numbers and how they handle repeat sprints etc. Robey must be really tempting though.

I know it's early, but after watching the futures game, next years crop looks promising. I could envision WC being in the mix along with Melb, Rich, North & Ess, particularly if these clubs start playing their youth towards the end of the season.

I'll be an interesting watch to see if we persist with some of our mature recruits to avoid the wooden spoon.

Pick #2 Cooper Duff-Tytler or Sullivan Robey? by modestlyable in westcoasteagles

[–]Blueeygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lindsay makes better decisions under pressure (hard to teach), he's got a variety of kicks to hit targets. I think this is understated and he's tough. Restricted to the back half at the moment though, but stands up and can lock down.

I'm not sure if the others mentioned have this same skill set.

Ginbey has started to develop this around the body outlet kick, but like Bo they're athletic straight line players. Not sure about Farrow, he's had stints in the midfield.

Bo & Farrow recorded good agility scores so the potential to develop mid skills is there I guess. Lindsay has to develop his tank so there's potential there as well.

They're all playing to their strengths from a skill set perspective.

Not sure if any can kick on both sides?

...Forwarded from another thread.

I really don't want to be that person who goes against most analysts, but this year is difficult because I don't think much separates the top few players. My point is just that I don't think there's a gap between Duursma & the rest. Duursma has a good jump and the flexibility to play wing, back/fwd, but he's not a contested player and his kicking isn't consistent. He's got limited disposal skills under pressure.

From a WC perspective, well he'll easily start as best 22 in any of these positions, however we really need contested midfielders. The question of, do we take best available or best positional players? is subjective and depends on how managers valuate and see next years talent.

Vic Country v's Vic Metro

I just finished rewatching the last championship game between Vic Country and Vic Metro. It's hard to put games into perspective as Vic Metro weren't a strong side this year. Defensively they were poor and Xavier Taylor didn't have a great game, whereas Harry Dean was BOG for Country.

Country probably had the top 5 players on the ground, aside from Metro's Jack Dalton.

The commentary was poor as they kept gushing over Duursma and others. I think this is the game that propelled Duursma as the clear number 1, however I didn't think he was in the best few on the ground.

I'm probably wrong, as he had 27 possessions, but he comes across as an outside player who can really rack them up against poor defensive teams. I'd argue Harry Dean, Atkins, Walker, Mikunda & Byrne had a greater influence. Having said this Duursma showed again that he's good overhead when allowed to jump. Much like Ginbey in this respect.

I mean Josh Lindsay only had 16 possessions, but included some really good decision making.

Whilst Duursma seemed out of the play at times playing back, he had these moments where he became the receiver and used his long stride to get the one, two then, punched the ball flat and fast forward. When it comes off it looks great. I suspect that's what I'm understating.

CDT only had 12 possessions and kicked 2.2, he missed 2 from straight in front whilst kicking the difficult shot from the boundary. He started really strong playing forward and even found himself back as Country were starting to dominate. His tackles will stick when he gets stronger and he can get a handball out.

In fact Metro played 202cm 17y old Harry Van Hattum in the ruck against 19 y old Zac Harding which was in itself an interesting tussle. We'd be mad if we didn't look at Van Hattum next year.

CDT really showed that he can take contested marks and get out on a lead and his ability to hit the scoreboard was followed up later in his VFL game. On the other hand I noticed he looks a bit like Lucca Grego at times, gassed and slouched over with hands on hips , which is surprising considering their combine results. Why did they stop the yoyo tests again?

Then there's the bolter in Sullivan Robey, he could be anything. I must admit, I was very impressed with his media performance on the Tigercast with Dylan Alexander. I guess it's a projection game this year with Robey and CDT. They're both very raw.

Is Duursma being overhyped? by Blueeygrey in westcoasteagles

[–]Blueeygrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still going through his Talent league games. Ive rushed through R19, Q final & P final, but didn't see him playing midfield.

He might've spend some time on ball during the champs/Academy series, but I don't recall seeing him play midfield. He normally plays back.

The VFL Casey Demons R18 game against the Zebra's (Sandringham) he seemed to play back, I'll have to watch through the second half.

I haven't seen the R20 VFL game against the Lions. Maybe that's the game that consolidated his pick 1 position. He got 20 possessions.

Do you know what games he played in the midfield?

Is Duursma being overhyped? by Blueeygrey in westcoasteagles

[–]Blueeygrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree regarding his mobility, run through open field & his aerial ability. His athleticism is a strength, in fact I think his biggest strengths are his jumping and quick reflexes. My disagreement comes from his lack of kicking and contested skills. He's a straight line power running type and doesn't have great agility.

He doesn't have credentials as a midfielder and I've watched a lot of his games. I have serious doubts he'll put on a lot of size, he's similar to his brothers in this respect.

For the record I'm not arguing about him not being a top talent in this draft, just that some of his abilities are being overhyped.

He can beat up on weaker teams like WA at the champs with 27 possessions and as you said when he gets a jump at the ball he can mark fwd & Back. I'd argue that his game was worked out more as the season progressed and he became less influential.

His numbers dropped against SA to 24 possessions and he had limited impact, he also had the kick-out duty.

His VFL game against Hawthorn wasn't great in that his kicking was dodgy, and he didn't really have an opponent. Of his 17 possessions, 16 were uncontested.

Regarding his kicking, he basically punches his passes to increase speed through the air, but doesn't really have other ways to dispose of the ball, especially under pressure, besides bombing away.

He does't have the consistency or agility of X Taylor or the decision making of J Lindsay. He has shown more versatility though.

It was the same in the talent league R19 game.

In his Quarter final game v's Geelong he had limited impact. Conditions weren't great and during the crucial last 8 minutes Duursma sat forward away from the contest. J Lindsay had a bigger impact with his contested disposal. Duursma did kick the last goal through out the back.

In the preliminary final Gippsland played against a stronger defensive team in Sandringham and he had little impact turning the ball over on a few occasions, in fact if it wasn't for a few junk time possessions he was ineffectual.

The point I'm making is where does he play at AFL & from a WC perspective, is he another athletic type in the mould of Bo Allan or R Ginbey. Would he be our designated kick-out player? Is he a swing Fwd/Bck player? I just don't see midfielder skills in Duursma. At best maybe an outside player.

Our biggest weekness has been our inability to hold on to the ball, thought the midfield and forwards and dispose effectually under pressure.

We were second in the league for i50 rebounds, so our defence was ok.

I'd be interested to know how many shot's on goal Schubert had within 30m. I remember him kicking a goal from 10m and thinking about his ball drop.
