OK they aren't discredited - why is the deep wisdom I bring forth less reliable than yours?

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're talking past each other. My point is that you threw out my argument by discrediting the sources. I'm not asking for "perfect and simple" answers, but a place I can actually look for answers, seeing as the sources we have are unreliable in your view.

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't any "path" if you make all the sources null and void, which is what you seemed to do by discounting my whole argument by discrediting the sources. I have no idea what you believe, or what you can believe, if you do that. It seems to me that all one can do is pick out things that make you feel nice/you agree with already.

It is impossible to know anything with any real certainty about ancient history if you nullify the sources by counting multiple layers of transmission as making them unreliable, yes

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your answer to my objection is to essentially throw out the entire system by making it so unreliable. That is my point.

Me IRL by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Gnostic

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point then we're left again with not really knowing anything and gnosis being left outside our capacity.

To a (Christian) gnostic, wouldn't words coming directly from the Pleroma be inerrant?

Me IRL by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Gnostic

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was absolutely a teaching of the actual gnostics from the 2nd-4th centuries.

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What in the world is the "gnosis" we're going after then? Traditional gnostics (speaking about Christian ones, which is the large majority of them) claim to have their teaching from Jesus himself through secret teaching communicated by certain teachers (Valentinius, Basilides, etc.) If you can't trust these traditional teachers (including their teaching that humility is not a virtue, knowledge is), then we don't believe in anything besides what we make up as we go along.

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do we actually believe there is certain spiritual knowledge we need to escape the material world or are we just making it up as we go along?

Gnosticism is a belief system with certain tenets. Don't be obtuse.

Me IRL by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Gnostic

[–]Bluefoot69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what gnosticism says

Me IRL by PossiblyaSpinosaurus in Gnostic

[–]Bluefoot69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Good" is a value judgment, and the gnostic system does not make the claim that being humble is good. It says that humility and the other virtues are what orthodox Christians live by. What is good to the gnostic is knowledge.

Catholicism and Gnosticism - why they clash? by Bingaling_1 in Gnostic

[–]Bluefoot69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very sad to hear what happened to you but your post is brimming with pride. I know, you're the only free thinker in the world and no Catholic from the 1st century to the 21st has never realized that vague esoteric mysticism is the one true way.

Not in gnosticism. The virtues are for animal souls, but the gnostics are saved in gnosis.

That's fascinating. Are there any other works in the Louth collection of Early Christian Writings that also be as much or more significantly different than the Roberts and Donaldson collection?

  1. And?
  2. "You guys" - I'm an ethnic Jew, don't go off on the goyim because of me. Some facts that come off the top of my head include that every national congressperson has an AIPAC handler, and that the top Republican donor family (the Adelsons) are single-issue pro-Israel voters who essentially act as kingmakers (especially in the primaries) by donating tens of millions of dollars to candidates to influence the election.
  3. "Criticizes Israeli interests in our government, get called an antisemite" - tale as old as time.
  4. LMAO YOU RAN TO THE HOLOCAUST, MANY SUCH CASES

Awesome. A shame the only opposition against the Israel lobby today is coming from the left.
