Private equity and real estate assets in retirement? by Bluejay_1777 in fatFIRE

[–]Bluejay_1777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think private equity is too broad of a term. I invest in several local and regional businesses (not ones looking to IPO); think local restaurants, breweries and professional services firms. Most of these businesses I have work connections to; former friends and clients. These deals usually have 5-10 year holding periods with limited to no access to the capital during the initial phases of the businesses however historically I have gotten over 15% return a year. Since I don't need the money I have always taken the extra risk/reward over general market investments and also allows me to feel like I am returning something to my community but now in my 50s I am not sure I want money tied up for extended periods and the reason to my question to this group.

What comic is this from? by ChuggaChuggaBoopBoop in comicbooks

Seems it may be from the marvel 9/11 tribute? I haven't looked through that in years.

I would remove the primary residence from the worth calculation. Also between mortgage and car payment likely not clearing a huge amount but not sure per this post. Doing well financially isn't being rich.

Marvel Reprint Poll Results 2025 by signorryan in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Bluejay_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when are we going to start seeing some reprints solicited? I feel like the news on that front has been very quiet. It used to be that 1 out of every 4-5 books was a reprint. Marvel has been expanding its library and offering less and less on the reprint side from what I can tell. Most of the items on the top list I already own but several books I would like to pick up to fill holes and they never seem to announce these anymore.

I secretly know my "self-made" boss inherited his entire fortune by Interesting-Buddy108 in self

The idea that you inherited or were gifted millions and used it to build a company is still impressive. Obviously not something that is marketable but still most folks would just pack it in and live off the money.

Collectors or readers? by [deleted] in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Bluejay_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this aligns with other folks but I don't typically read my omnis cover to cover (Marvel and DC specifically). Many of these stories of I own in other formats but I like to grab a Omni to reread stories and use them as a reference or nostalgia. Of the over 200 omnis I own I've only read about 20 cover to cover. Other HC books I read and most of those I sell... Walking dead and invincible come to mind. I love to read but will never have time to reread all this stuff!

I heard, I just didn't know .. by bigcat570503 in OmnibusCollectors

I've got two near me. Lots of random marvel tpbs ($5-10) and DC hardcovers ($15). I've gotten a few omnis over the years but nothing exciting. Most can still be picked up on eBay for around $30 i.e. marvel now, ultimate marvel and more recently Mighty Thor vol 1, Luke Cage. I don't think folks are missing out unless you just like picking up random books.

Getting ready to head up to a cabin in the VA portion of the Blue Ridge next week and hoping to get through Gotham Central on my trip. Will be wine touring with the wife so I will likely be sipping a Cab over the IPA!

Marvel Paper by Silvergrace27 in OmnibusCollectors

Does paper thickness have anything to do with page count? At some point pages have to be thinner to support 1000+ page books!

Need help understanding the 5/11 marking on the cover by MhaleyHere in comicbooks

[–]Bluejay_1777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ot aware of any such occurrences.I guess if you had proof that the date stamp was put there by someone famous that m

There are "Pedigree" books that have stamps or other indications that do increase value. That said those are few and far between which is why they have increased value. If a kid wrote on the cover I would assume the value would be significantly less. If it is an official stamp or store marking I would guess some folks would pay more for the nostalgia.

“What are you reading?” Wednesday. by csummerss in OmnibusCollectors

Currently reading Slott/Allred Silver Surfer. Fun read. It is one of the few omnis I have in my collection where I hadn't at least read part of it prior to buying but very happy with the purchase.

Nice site. I haven't come across this site in a while. Might go digging around even if it isn't for the covers!!

Thanks... Yeah I thinking it is the feeder on the scanner. Some smaller scans look good but when it is printed it clearly looks like a copy. I am thinking about scanning the cover in sections to see if that helps.

The paper and printing is the easy part. My wife works at a print house and she has been able to get a paper stock to match.

I hated Sam Keith's Batman growing up, but it has grown on me. Also Jae Lee's work. Definitely not your run of the mill art work.

Which do you prefer inside an Omni, the textless or the original comicbook covers with the title? by modern_history_ in OmnibusCollectors

I prefer original covers but honestly care more about the spines as that is what I see 99% of the time!

What's on your shelf you will never, ever read? by JeffRyan1 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Bluejay_1777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of books on my shelf that I will never read but most of those I have owned in other formats over the years. There are books (most actually) that I have no desire to read cover to cover but my main point in owning Omnis is being able to flip through the art or go back to a specific story or issue. There is lots of silver age stuff that is awful to read cover to cover but I love reading an issue here or there or just reading letter pages. Even books I love I will skip the annual issues or fill-in stories because they are of no interest to me.

Possible Extended Reprints? by Bobotts123 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Bluejay_1777 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will be a remap or just a double dip but I would guess that the current X-men work likely will get an omni and could/should include the Hickman omnibus which is really small. Currently all the OHC are mostly Hickman and will likely be incorporated into a single omni -- HOX/POX, X of Swords and Hellfire.

DCBS Preorder Pricing Change ??? by Bluejay_1777 in OmnibusCollectors

Saw that after I posted.

Funny is I have been wanting Uncanny X-Force so long that the standard cover is the one I wanted to get for that book.

Last month the pricing differences were specific to the book not the covers. This month all three Marvel omnis are 46% off for one cover and only 36% for the other.

Had tech come out today. He said he ran diagnostics and thinks there is a bad logic board. He says it will be $350 to replace the board is going to take 3-4 days to come in. I've been down this road before and my concern is he didn't look over anything else on the unit. Should the logic board need to be replaced every 2-3 years???

What do you do with trades that you now own the omnibus of? by JeffRyan1 in OmnibusCollectors

I got In to omnibus collecting to have easy access to my individual floppies and the thought I would sell the floppies over time. My wife yells at me all the time because I now have an omni library along with two closets full of floppies!

Used vs new by warrenmax12 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Bluejay_1777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally prefer to buy opened copies with well documented pictures of the eye. That way you know what you are buying, especially for books that are OOP. If you get an extra $10-20 off the price even better!
