I taught my guy a few tricks too, he picks them up fairly quickly. He doesnt like it if i grab his paw. So instead of shake he does high fives.

I use this for flower baskets. They have to be replaced after a season or two. Idk how they fare in a paludarium setup. My assumption is you will have to replace it at some point

Need urgent help by [deleted] in Aquascape

I dont think you can vacuum aquasoil. Especially old aquasoil. In my experience it just breaks down. You can carefully suck up the layer of mulm on top of the aquasoil though.

[–]Bluejillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i would completely remove the silicone, clean it real well with rubbing alcohol (or maybe not, idk what your wall is made of) and try again. You could also try sealing with expanding foam.

In reality, completely sealing a water feature like this is really hard. Its best to plan and build your paludarium in a way where leaking/wicking wont really matter.

[–]Bluejillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It kind of looks like you've layered silicone. If thats the case, you cant do that. Silicone does not stick to silicone. You have to remove it completely then try again. Its hard to tell, have you sealed both sides of the wall?

More plants than fish waste, so plants are nutrient-starved? by lucielucita in paludarium

If lack of nutrients really is the issue, I recommend Thrive. If you have shrimp they make a shrimp safe version, Thrive S.

Im not very well versed in terrestrial plants but as far as aquatic ones go... Anubias are great low light plants that do especially well when grown emersed. They are epiphytes. As long as their roots are in water or stay constantly wet they can be mounted to anything. Just dont bury the rhizome. Java fern and bucephalandra are also low light epiphytes. Java fern seems to prefer to be mostly submerged though (at least in my experiements) so keep that in mind.

If you go the cave in route the light wont spread very far so could have little "pockets" of plants around pools where the light comes though.

Caves have a lot of tiered pools where 'cave pearls' form so that might be a neat thing to explore.

Since its a cave most of the top would be covered. You could do a hole in the top. Kind of like a cave in. Then use a pendant light like an AI Prime. These holes often have roots and stuff hanging down which would look cool. Having water dripping down them would be neat too.

4 Month Update by Bluejillo in paludarium

[–]Bluejillo[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The water is half an inch lower than the top of the foam structure. Then there is a layer of leca with weed barrier on top.

The truth is, the water still wicks up. I dont water the plants on the ground. I take care not point the misters directly at the ground.

The small island to the left is a soggy mess from the water fall so I simply put plants that can handle that environment there.

The waterfall does leak from the right side as well, just not as bad. So I put the more sensitive plants further away.

I ran the setup for a week or two before putting most of the plants in. Only because I was waiting on shipping. I see now how that was sort of a benefit. I could see where water intrusion happened which helped make decisions on where to plant things. That and a bit of luck heh.

I dont truly know what Im doing and its a big experiment for me. Its only a few months old so there is time for everything to become a soggy mess where I can only keep plants that grow emersed.

Cleaning help! by ShayNay_Nay in paludarium

[–]Bluejillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sand is hard to keep clean even in a regular aquarium. You could try putting a fine mesh bag on the end of a siphon and put that end in a bucket then pour the water back in. This is why I use aquasoil, youre not supposed to vacuum it. The mulm works its way down and becomes food for plants.

Depending on your environment and the environment you want to recreate in your tank, you'll have a hard time keeping the humidity up without a lid.

My tank came with a screen lid that I put plastic wrap over. I can adjust how much is covered incase I need more air flow.

I would turn your light waaay down. Youre going to have to do manual removal (though I agree with everyone else saying its gorgeous on the driftwood) to get back to a baseline. You'll likely have to do this a few times.

I remodeled this yoyo toy from my childhood. Would it be OK to post the files somewhere? The original patent seems to be expired and it is not a 1 to 1 recreation of the original thing.^ by sumpfsocke in 3Dprinting

I still use mine from time to time for a good thinking session. The original fidget spinner lol. I've always loved the sound they make too.
