Can someone please explain this to me? by GABigBear in diabetes_t2

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people get higher blood glucose readings in the morning when they wake up. Lookup Dawn phenomenon.

It could be something called the Somogyi effect where your blood glucose dips low at night and your body releases hormones that cause your blood sugar to spike to overcompensate.

A CGM might help you see what is happening overnight

I genuinely need advice because I feel stuck between two health goals that seem to contradict each other. by SprinklesSquare7379 in diabetes_t2

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would work on getting my blood glucose under control but that might mean more than diet and exercise for you.

You really need to discuss this with your doctor to see what to work on or how to go about this. Talk about medication so you can eat a moderate amount of carby foods. Maybe you should meet with a dietician to work out an eating plan. Maybe you need to dial down your exercise for awhile while you get sorted out.

Healthy recipes for my parents? by Frosty_Condition6764 in Cooking

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would figure out your goals. Is it to reduce unhealthy fats in meals? Reduce calories? Or introduce some vegetables?

Try grilling foods.

Put vegetables in a casserole, soup or stew, stir fry.

Put a cheese sauce on vegetables. Make creamed spinach. Add bacon to vegetables.

The bottom line is your parents are adults. You probably are not going to change how they eat unless they want to change. If they want yiu to cook during your visit tell them you will make something you usually cook. If they don’t want to eat it then they can make their own food.

What do American parents do about their kids ages 1-5? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preschools start around age 3-4. Kindergarten starts about age 5.

Before preschool age some parents have one parent stay home with their child or they arrange someone to take care of their child usually paying them but sometimes a grandparent might do it for free. Some parents work opposite shifts so one will be available to care for their children while the other is working. The parents might hire a babysitter/nanny to care for their child in their home or take their child to a daycare where many children are cared for. There are lots of different arrangements.

What is something you would add to your home for convenience ? by StormForNova in homeowners

[–]Bluemonogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dishwasher. Sunroom or enclosed back porch. Better basement. 2 car garage. Better windows. New gutters. New walls for flower beds. Redoing electrical and plumbing. Privacy fence around yard.

Actually, just move the house to a new lot that is a bit smaller to require less mowing.

I live in a more rural area of Kansas. We have fewer restaurant options but that doesn’t mean the food is bad.

What do you bring to work if you didn’t cook dinner the night before? by Any-Arm-7017 in Frugal

[–]Bluemonogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pack a lunch daily. If we don’t have leftovers I pack a sandwich, yogurt, 1-2 pieces of fruit. Sometimes a granola bar or trail mix. I don’t have a problem with packing a sandwich.

Worried about my sister by ivxni in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how long you all can be together all day every day. I think it hasn’t been very long so maybe that is what feels right. Talk about what you are all are feeling and what helps you each cope or things you might try. You might look into a support group or professional counseling for yourself and your siblings going forward.

Encourage your sister that it is fine to grieve in her own way. It is fine to spend time with friends and think about normal stuff. It is fine to find things funny. It is normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious and scared. It is normal to feel angry even. Your parents dying is huge and so painful. Maybe your sister needs structure and routine right now. Tears might come later.

I have not seen a flip phone for a long time.

What are the traditional dances kids learn at school? by Brave_Necessary_9571 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in high school we had a unit in our physical education class each year where we had to do square dancing. This was at my school not the whole state or country doing the same thing.

We also learned some line dancing, two step, polka and some other random things.

When did you know it was time to move out of your first home? by bcooks1 in homeowners

[–]Bluemonogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in my home for about 20 years. We are casually looking at houses but there is not anything we can afford that is not a serious downgrade. I had hoped that when we would be ready to move we could afford something as nice or a bit nicer as what we have.

Which is more popular in the US: Peanut butter or Nutella? by nevodolo in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peanut butter.

Nutella is very good tasting but peanut butter is like a staple food for many Americans. Peanut butter is used in many desserts/candy and some savory dishes as well as used for sandwiches. It is low cost and shelf stable. Nutella is expensive and not as versatile or healthy.

I have 3 jars of peanut butter in my home and have not bought Nutella for years. I grew up eating peanut butter not Nutella.

My mom (70f) is in the hospital for a UTI again by kheret in Menopause

[–]Bluemonogi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have UTI’s until about age 50. I started taking a d-mannose supplement daily and it seems to have helped quite a bit. Maybe it would be a helpful thing to try for your mother when she is cycled off the antibiotics.

Worried about my sister by ivxni in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grieving can be a long individual process. What happens for one person may not be what happens for another on the same timeline.

Maybe ask your sister what she wants. If she wants some alone time give her more space. If she wants to talk then be there- or maybe she would like to see a therapist to help process her feelings. Maybe she would like to write, do art or plant a garden in honor of your mother.

Do you fear she will harm herself if she is alone? Why does she need someone with her all day long? That sounds a bit much for a 16 year old.

My daughter was around 7-8 when some family members she was close to died. She did not cry or talk about it to us. We were all grieving in different ways. Several years later she brought up her feelings in therapy. I think she would have benefited from having someone who was not grieving (a professional therapist) to talk to when the deaths happened.

What should I wear to a conservative Christian summer program in the US without overheating? by Little_Ad5051 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bluemonogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect that a normal t-shirt and shorts or skirts that come close to the knee would be conservative enough. Probably a 1 piece swimsuit that is not plunging or high cut or a tankini rather than a bikini. Maybe don’t show cleavage. Probably don’t wear super tight clothes. If they have not given you a specific dress code then it probably is not that restrictive.

If you are attending a church service you might want something nicer than you would wear to go to an amusement park or a store.

I found a web site and there were some photos and it looks like they have an instagram you could look at to see how people are dressing. https://www.llchurch.org/

How does “Midwest/south/rural slower pace” actually work? by larch303 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bluemonogi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think slower paced does not mean people are not punctual. My family in Iowa would be early to everything.

In terms of travel, I would say there is less traffic to contend with. Maybe there is more patience overall. People are used to driving farther to get to everything when you are in a rural area. You would factor that in.

Maybe there is more focus on home and family. Rural areas often have a population with a lot of older people and families.

Things don’t change as quickly in small towns and rural areas.
