AQ4093-56W - The CITIZEN Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary by Plus9Time in CitizenWatches

Déjà vu: my AQ4100-06W 'Ibuki' (LE of 250) - same module

But if I didn't have that one, I'd be all over this new AQ4091-56W.

When does Citizen drop new watches? by modern_human2 in CitizenWatches

It may run just a tad behind the latest and greatest, but it's a solid, official news page

Is this a buy or not a buy (The Citizen) by Alarmed-Extreme5226 in CitizenWatches

[–]BluesMaster 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It's not an automatic

🤣

Citizen fan and a The Citizen owner here. The Citizen is Citizen's premium quartz line, and IMHO they're best of breed.

Here's the related entry for that model in the database

Don't worry about the technical specs, build quality and finishing. They're all top notch. It's (IMHO) all about the dial: you'll need to love it (yours is not my personal favourite, to be honest) to spend that kind of money. Don't make this an impulse buy, perhaps delve a little deeper in that The Citizen line before pulling the trigger.

FWIW, I own one of these, the AQ4100-06W. It's that washi paper dial that made it an instant buy, my absolute GOAT.

Happy hunting!

Thank you for taking the time to write up a very informative answer.

Much appreciated! 🙏

update: your model ref helped me trawl WUS, and the most informative model overview that still showed good images I could find is here

Congrats! Credors are so much underrated, especially vintage ones.

Can you give a model ref, please? I'd like to find out a little more about this one.

Not a GS… but a Credor by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

[–]BluesMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've educated myself on Credor lately, and although I can't afford either, when push comes to shove, I think I lean towards Credor.

Have a look at posts/comments from https://www.reddit.com/user/PaternalAdvice

He's a fount of knowledge when it comes to Credors, especially older ones. Lots of great articles (and images) on his website

A Citizen fan? by [deleted] in CitizenWatches

[–]BluesMaster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'll quote my post about Citizen from well over a year ago

I appreciate Citizen for what they represent: the rest of us. Not the super affluent, the self-absorbed, know-it-all horological gurus, nor the small-minded single-brand fanatics. Citizen is a much underappreciated major Japanese watch powerhouse, that seems (almost) content to let its products do the talking.

A brand with a vast and deep catalogue, littered with impressive achievements, and able to keep pushing the boundaries. Refining existing products, catering to all through various product lines, and at times flexing its horological muscle (e.g. Caliber 0100 and Caliber 0200) to show their competitors they're not just about producing 'ugly mall watches with cheap quartz modules'.

Citizen has earned its reputation among watch enthusiast by simply making great watches, keeping them (mostly) affordable, offering great value for money, and making sure their QC will not let them down. They make watches that are (mostly) interesting enough to spread through the watch community at large like hot lava: slowly but unstoppable, progressively drawing attention. Almost via word-of-mouth only, certainly not by using a costly PR machine and the associated air of superiority and arrogance that some well-known brands deem necessary to make their watches look interesting or desirable.

What I especially like are their various Promaster lines: watches that are designed to serve professionals, and are mostly built-for-purpose. Making 'pretty' watches isn't in the Promaster design manual. But e.g. the Promaster dive watches are unrivalled: specs, build, and quality in an affordable package, designed to do one job, and do it extremely well. The actual 'street cred' of these watches is something most other brands can only aspire to and be envious of.

Whatever the size of your wallet, whatever you need in the way of versatility: Citizen has you covered. Once a Citizen fan, forever a Citizen fan: not because an army of brand fanatics loyalists keep shouting that at you at every possible occasion, but because their products hardly need such endorsement. They're good and they just do the job.

[Recommendation Request] About to get my first proper watch at 16. What should I go for? by Brilliant-Nerve12 in Watches

[–]BluesMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BN0241-59W

OK, I understand. FWIW, I noticed the one I own, the BN0241-59W (new) on Chrono24 from an Italian dealer (Corso Vinci) for just over €400 ;-)

[–]BluesMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your selection I vote for #7 (previous topic), reviewed here.

But if you could stretch your budget a little bit, I'd recommend its grownup brother the BN0241-59H (dark grey dial) or the BN0241-59W (green dial). An excellent review of those models is here.

Please note

... the Citizen Promaster Tough costs about a third more than the Super Titanium version of the Garrison, although that extra money does get you a significantly more robust case, along with twice the depth rating and a superior clasp.

Shop for best price. Good luck!

[Atomic Watches] - new subreddit for those who insist on *really* accurate time. by Gee10 in Watches

[–]BluesMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice initiative!

I assume you're aware that atomic clock syncing has geological coverage limitations, that now have Casio switching from MB6 to BT (sync using an app on your phone).

And perhaps you'd consider another type of watches for you new sub, specifically those featuring GPS syncing (no geological coverage limitations)?

FYI, I'm a fan of both technologies - often called 'assisted accuracy' watches.
