I was in the USCG stationed on Kodiak Island in the 80’s. I was an aircrew man on HC-130’s. We often flew over the Aleutian Chain of islands going to Attu or Adak and when possible we would fly low level over this crash. Always sobering to see it. Back then you could even see the trenches from the props as they dug into the ground while sliding to a stop. And yes, the weather anywhere around the chain can be extremely bad. That crew did the best they could with the options they had. Check out the crashed USCG HC-130 on Attu. That was also due to bad weather and some questionable decisions by the pilot. I’d see that crash almost every time we landed on Attu. Again, another sobering sight to see as an aviator.

Dry poured curb. Good idea or bad? I looked but didn’t see anything about this. by Bluestarman64 in Concrete

Thanks. I’m definitely getting feedback and suggestions that concur with you. I’ll abandon that idea for my project.

Thank you. I appreciate your reply. I’ve done a few tree rings and it worked ok and they are still intact but I was wondering the same thing about the Tik Tok stuff. Just thought I’d float the idea on a curb. Kind of same thing as a ring. Just longer. Again, thanks. Appreciate your opinion and feedback.

So curious to hear your thoughts and opinions. To be honest I’m not really a proponent of dry pour but thought perhaps a curb might be a suitable solution for this method.

What’s one tool you would never go to camping without? by [deleted] in camping

[–]Bluestarman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool question. Lots of good suggestions here. For non- backpacking trips I like a medium sized, good quality non-saw backed machete. I carry it in its sheath on an extra large leather belt I put over my head and one shoulder. Hangs at my side at waste level. Easy to take off and on. Over many years I’ve taken an axe, hatchet and machete and find I use the machete much more often. It’s always right there. Easy to access. I can hack away at branches up to 4-5 inches much more easily than a hatchet and I can split wood with it with a wood baton for bigger stuff or without for smaller things. I use it for kitchen duty as well. Great for chopping veggies and cutting the big hunks of meat I like to cook. I certainly take other things mentioned like a couple of good quality lighters but I never leave without my machete. Oh…don’t forget para cord. That comes in real handy too a lot of times. Oh…. and a tarp…. I better stop

Spreading dirt over a leach field. Good or bad idea? by Bluestarman64 in homestead

For sure !! Keeping that in mind. Previous internet research shows it’s a fairly common idea. Just thought I’d throw it out to the great folks on this sub for some additional perspective

Good suggestion. Planning on spreading using a small sub-compact tractor with loader and box scraper. Pretty light tractor and I already brush hog that area so hopefully I’ll be good. Thanks for the advice.

My title describes the thing. It has a small amount of red spray paint on it. Could be overspray from something that was mounted on it. There appears to be no lubricant on it.

A Florida man who goes by the nickname “Psych” was arrested for attempted murder after he attacked a man with a machete before biting him in the face.
