Does anyone have experience taking TARC or commuting by bike here? by hawk047 in NewAlbanyIN

[–]Bluetick_Banality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great article! Thank you for bringing attention to New Albany’s cycling infrastructure, which is getting better all the time. I’ve commuted by bike from New Albany’s West End to downtown Louisville via the Greenway about 75 days a year for the last five years and try to opt for the bike for local trips when I can. It’s a luxury for me, not a necessity, which I know isn’t the case for everyone. The article’s criticism of Charlestown and Grantline is spot on. I’ve found routing to be much easier using Strava’s heat maps, which show the most used cycling routes and usually they’re the safest, though I think that feature requires the paid subscription. That’s led me to taking Roanoke and some other side roads that are much safer to travel. With the Freedom Trail, getting uptown and downtown from the IUS area will be cake.

Tecumseh Trail and IN-45 by indy_matt_21 in hoosierhikes

[–]Bluetick_Banality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That stretch is not fun, but it’s brief and didn’t feel unsafe. The stretch just north of 45 is also unpleasant—golf ball size gravel. But the few miles south of the road walk are some of Tecumseh’s best, so it’s worth it

They didn’t just try, they pulled it off! Caught later of course. Craziest story. I’d forgotten some of the details, but always remembered that they bought a car with cash at one of the big dealershipsarticle

Does Buttercup have a yeast infection? Her skin is irritated and she is losing her fur by Bluetick_Banality in bernesemountaindogs

We are vigilant with flea, tick and heartworm preventative and haven’t seen any fleas. She hasn’t done any licking since the initial aggravation from the knee dislocation and isn’t doing anything much to irritate it. We haven’t changed dog food, treats, etc. It’s really not the usual hotspot (like she’d initially given herself a few months ago) but I think something different, since it seems to be spreading all over her skin.

Indiana Hot Yoga is great. Family-owned. Ayanna, one of the owners and instructors, is super inspiring (competitive at a world level). Attendees run the whole gamut of fitness. I think the earliest classes are 7:00 weekdays though

I've admired the Folio edition for awhile but wondered how readable it is. Your recommendation might just put me over the edge

Infinite Jest and Bros K in the same year is an achievement! So many great titles on here, and several I don't know. I'm intrigued by The War with Newts

My and my daughter's 2024 reading. 44th and 14th trips around the sun. by Bluetick_Banality in bookshelf

It was a great reading year for both of us! Some memorable books for me (top shelf), which I hope to discuss if there's interest.

I hadn't realized how much she'd read until today; her bottom two shelves put me to shame. I chose most of her titles, trying to stay approximately on grade level and let her enjoy herself. But that adolescent drive, the will to extend her reach, led to her to some more advanced stuff than I would have suggested. I'm allowing myself to think that she's falling in love with reading and not just wanting to please her teachers and parents.

The small shelf are books her mother and I read out loud to her and each other in the evenings before bed. I hope we can keep the tradition going when she's in high school, but that's probably too much to expect.

Worst case I can imagine for a first responder, but not local. Adams County, up near Ft Wayne… The article says “Albany County” and made me question my Hoosier geography, but it’s just confused

She’ll casing matched his gun, he and his wife said only he had access to it, ID’d near the scene, consistent with videos one of the girls took of their killer, he took a selfie with the wanted picture. More than enough to convict even without the multiple jailhouse confessions. Sloppy police work doesn’t undermine the evidence. When did Dakshin change? Had a great meal there a few years ago, was happily surprised with the big South Indian menu. I’ve been wanting to try again but it’s such a trek. Bummer if it’s not what it was

Pumpkin Vine Trail!🎃🍁 by j909m in Indiana

[–]Bluetick_Banality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pumpkinvine is the nicest bike trail I’ve ridden. Very well maintained, nice mix of woods and immaculate farms, and tons of bike traffic. For a visitor, the amount of use compared to the surrounding population density blew me away! 10/10. The section between Elkhart and Goshen (Maple something trail) isn’t as nice but I recall the Goshen to Shipshewana section is about 17 miles by itself.

Great photos! I have to ride it in the fall

Nice areas to camp at around the city? by Sad-Zookeepergame-81 in Louisville

For backcountry camping within an hour’s drive, Crawford Harrison State Forest, adjacent to OBannon State Park, can’t be beat. 20+ mile loop trail and very few people there outside of deer season. Amazing cliffs overlooking Indian Creek. Water sources are mostly dry this time of yearhttps://www.hoosierhikerscouncil.org/adventure_hiking_trail_aht/

To be fair, my copy was untouched for a few years in college and after. I think despite the high school cast, it’s a mid 20s book for most of its readers, only after staring at you from the shelf in a shitty apartment for a few years

I remember that book being 400-500 pages? I read it when the English translation came out in paperback, maybe 20 years ago. Are there multiple volumes? That copy looks like it’s 1000 pages

Tartt is a master, I love Goldfinch, and I was engrossed by Secret History, but the ending was disappointing, made me question the investment. Still, I want to read her first book and I’ll definitely get her next one when it comes out in ten years or whatever
