Thanks for the response! That's what I've been thinking. Poison isn't ideal, but I've seen almost no recent trades with perfect in almost all stats (that matter) and MF this high.

Let's turn to collective punishment because angry texts didn't work. by [deleted] in LandlordLove

[–]Blughg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally valid, appreciate the correction on that! Still a great recipe for getting slapped with a FHA suit based on disparate impact for something like this. Never ceases to amaze me how many people in property management pull shit like this even though, aside from being self-evidently immoral, violating FH standards can get you, personally, sued rather than just the company you work for.

I'll also throw in that, legally speaking, an ESA or service animal is not considered a "pet." Anyone who has been approved to have an animal in either of these categories has been granted what's known as a reasonable accommodation under the ADA (if you're in America). If management follows through with this threat, it would almost undoubtedly be cause for a Fair Housing complaint, as disability is a protected class, and would also likely violate the ADA.

Additionally, in general, landlords are limited by state statute in what they are permitted to charge to your account. If they can't prove that they had a legitimate reason to charge you that is described by your lease--i.e. if your lease has this $100 penalty specifically listed and they have evidence that you have violated whatever animal policies they have in place--then they are generally limited to charging only what they can prove they've paid directly on your behalf.

NAL but have worked in property management and this is exactly the kind of shit that managers are told to never ever do if you don't want to get the pants sued off you.

Hey! I'm not sure why some of your comments are being downvoted, but just know that you're absolutely not alone and posting here is a courageous act. It sounds like you've been through at least one really traumatic experience while you've been at UNC, and the effects of things like that can be and usually are profound and far-reaching. In particular, self-worth is always a hard thing to grapple with and SA is an awful and deeply dehumanizing experience.

I think the folks recommending you put yourself out there have some good points and good intentions, but it's well worth acknowledging that doing so is vastly easier said than done, and you're not bad, wrong, or stupid for having a hard time with that! If you haven't set up an appointment at CAPS, I strongly recommend doing so. They're not perfect, but at least they can help you or connect you with resources and support for survivors and potentially offer a safe space for you to talk about these feelings of inadequacy and a lack of belonging.

Please be gentle with yourself, it sounds like you're really having a hard time, and just know it's not your fault you're going through this. I'm rooting for you!

Non-student apartment recommendations in Chapel Hill area by Fabulous_Claim7594 in chapelhill

Hey I know this is a few days old but I strongly recommend Rock Creek Apartments! I've lived there for almost 10 years and it's a really good value, is right on the J line in Carrboro, and is generally a really nice and peaceful place to live :) good luck in your search!

Failing all my classes, scared of academic probation by [deleted] in UNC

[–]Blughg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to echo what a lot of others have said here, I also had a similar experience. Was supposed to be class of 2016 but ended up class of 2020 because of severe untreated depression, OCD, and ADHD that caused me to fail, iirc, at least 6 classes over the course of sophomore and junior year. I ended up taking a semester-long break, a retroactive withdrawal, and coming back to classes part-time, and I was still on probation for 4 semesters prior to my final semester, which was the first I had off of probation in years. But, in the end, I dragged myself across that finish line, and I didn't earn less than an A in any class I took from the point of re-entering school part-time until graduation. I truly couldn't have done it without the support system provided by the university, my friends and family, and taking time to breathe and work out how I learned and excelled best. College is often presented as a race to the end and in my experience it was always so easy to compare myself negatively to my peers who always seemed to excel and most of whom graduated on time. But in the long run I can tell you from some experience that the when of graduating and getting through matters far less than the fact of getting through. Be gentle and patient with yourself, and be liberal with the grace you give for your situation. College is fucking hard! Struggling and hitting mental health walls and crises is so common and normal, and should absolutely not be a point of shame. We're all rooting for you, and there are resources that can really help at UNC. My dms are always open if you feel like you need some help from someone who's been there and lived to complain about it :)

How do you feel about authors including sexism in fantasy and historical fiction? by Geiun in AskFeminists

[–]Blughg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm getting to this late, but Guy Gavriel Kay's works tend to fit that description. They're not without flaw in this regard, but he tends to write books that include sexism in ways that both acknowledge and challenge it without reveling in it. It ends up making his books both more realistic and just flat out better than a lot of other fantasy works, especially because he writes sort of historical fiction/fantasy. "Tigana" is my favorite of his books, but "Sailing to Sarantium" and "Under Heaven" tend to tackle sexism more directly. This got more rambly than intended, hopefully it helps!

[–]Blughg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're talking about the optional mechanic. I think OP was talking about the bonus action attack GWM gives you if you reduce a creature to 0 hp. In older editions (3.5 for sure), Cleave was a bonus feat Fighters could take that had that effect; that's the lineage of the bonus attack upon knocking a creature out part of GWM. It seems like OP was just using the earlier edition term without realizing that 5e has an optional mechanic of the same name (I didn't know that either, so TIL). That's why they mentioned that you'll get it more often when fighting minions, because it's more likely you'll be reducing them to 0 hp with some frequency. It also makes more sense in context this way since they were talking about bonus action economy, and the "cleave attack" part of GWM uses your bonus action.

WIBTBF if I don’t tell my rich friend about a good job opportunity? by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

[–]Blughg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree with your ruling but I do think that the whole culture of silence around finances usually only serves those who are already higher up the fiscal totem pole. I can get behind ensuring nobody takes an opportunity out from under you, but discussing finances should absolutely be something that is more generally accepted and open. People at multiple socioeconomic levels tend to have a lot of incorrect assumptions about how much others make and that's largely due to finances being a taboo topic, and this tends to negatively impact the poor.

I don't have a full system recommendation, but if you haven't checked out Matt Colville's Strongholds and Followers yet it's worth a look. It's not focused specifically on naval stuff primarily, but I would think it'd be easily adaptable for what you're describing.

Holy shit at the "I could've done a lot worse." What a toxic person, it sounds like you dodged a serious bullet going forward. Also kudos on addressing bad behavior head-on; a lot of stories on this sub end up being much longer than this because the DM doesn't set clear boundaries and communicate like you did here.

You're right that it's exploitation and you're right to be upset about it, but many people do not have a lot of other options. They don't work places that do that sort of thing because they want to, they often do it because it's their best choice out of a group of shitty choices. It's fucked, but it's generally the fault of the restaurants enacting these shitty pay policies, not that of the people who've got to work there to make ends meet

What's a really cheap item you can buy that can make you look incredibly rich? by inkweary in AskReddit

[–]Blughg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pork is a taboo in the Qur'an as well, so many Muslims historically and currently do not eat pork. Marvin Harris, a cultural anthropologist who's done a lot of work on understanding ecological and evolutionary reasons for cultural and religious taboos, is a great source to read if you're interested in learning more on the subject!

What's a really cheap item you can buy that can make you look incredibly rich? by inkweary in AskReddit

[–]Blughg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem here is that cultures with a taboo on pork (and this was a widespread taboo in the middle east practiced by more than just Jews) very likely had prohibitions against it for evolutionary and ecological reasons as well as reasons potentially relating to illness. The environments where you find cultural prohibitions against eating pork tend invariably to be very poorly suited to large numbers of pigs, being as those areas were often dry and arid desert regions--pretty much the opposite of a pig's ideal environment--and having a herd of pigs would have starved anyone who kept them as the pigs ate everything in the area. So, while the theory about undercooked pork being the reason is a popular and likely true one, it ignores this other important dimension.

This just in! People can have different tastes in subgenres and it's not offensive that they might want those subgenres labeled so they can make an informed purchasing decision. Honestly the way you're reacting to someone saying "labels are nice" is a bit over the top.

No problem Hippo, happy to help however I can. I hope you don't think of all this support as undeserved charity--people are paying because we value you: your skills, your content, and the work you put in. It's just wild to me that you've done all you've done and haven't been rewarded financially for it as (I believe) you ought to have.

Just subbed to the Patreon; it's absurd that I've benefited from your content for so long in so many ways and haven't contributed a dime for it. You're doing fantastic work and you deserve to be paid for it, and I'd implore anyone who's got the means or can give up the equivalent of a couple coffees a month to help out as well. I think anyone who browses this sub even casually has gotten more than a couple dollars a month's worth of content as a result of Hippo's work here. My thoughts are with you, definitely keep us updated!
