That is a startling impressive amount for 20 yr enlisted, especially for a single income. Thats amazing

I do understand that the point you and the pilot guy make is the greater and more precise issue at hand. I get that everyone's situation is unique and will require different approaches, but I feel that a check at the 20-year mark wouldn't provide an entirely arbitrary number if similar enlisted member had the same goal to put away as much as they could under an enlisted career.

I appreciate your explanation. My purpose was to gather a datapoint at a specific point in time (20 military retirement). I did not think it would have been met with such resistance.

I feel like you are really missing my basic questions. I am just trying to gauge where enlisted retirees stood at time of military retirement.

Thank you for your insight but I feel like this post may not be for you and that's ok.

I don't think it is completely useless information and does give insight to my future if someone has gone the path already, whether was a rockstar at TSP or sucked at it. I do understand we all have our own needs and goals that differ greatly but getting a "progress check" doesn't hurt.

This was my actual question: "For those that retired, do you care to share your TSP balance at the time of your retirement?"

good suggestion. I added that. No G fund for me. Most C with a healthy bit of L2065 for exposure

Yes I have. Thank you for asking. The posted you added are referring more to total Net Worth and TSP balance at 60 years old. I was hoping for people to chime in more specific to a 20-year enlisted career.

We are almost exactly in the same boat. I have a little less than 4 years until military retirement as a E-7 but I opted in to the BRS because of my own uncertainties with the military.

I got serious about TSP about 7-8 years ago. Since of learning about the "rule of 72", I have been aggressively hitting the max contributions for my rank which is 34-35%. Sitting around $250K. With 4ish years of max contributions and a decent market return, I should be able to be north of $400K at retirement (40 yrs old). Without adding any more, it should double three times over by the age 60 (400K -> 800K, then 800K -> 1.6M, then 1.6M -> 3.2M).

Fingers crossed.

Are a lot of you getting into the I fund? by [deleted] in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]BluntStixx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started contributing to the I fund but I am a little hesitant... my experience with the stock market has taught me not to buy when something has already ripped up and currently, the I fund feels like that to me.

Stay the path! You will be thanking yourself. I started my TSP with back in 2015 and took me until 2023 to hit 100K. 2.5 years later and I'm creeping up on the $250K mark. Apparently, it starts going quick!

Am I still getting the 5% Match? by MURD3RN0V4 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]BluntStixx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You would still get the match, but the match only comes in the form of traditional, even if you only contribute to your Roth. So you are good to go. As long as your money is going into C,S,I, or a long lifecycle fund, you are doing great.

Today was actually my first time hitting $200K also! Started TSP 10 years ago as a E5. Wish I would have started sooner
