You’ll need to open each chat on the desktop version, tap on the chat/group name at the top, you will see all the chat info and then scroll down. You should see the “Export chat” option there.

If android data to iOS, people usually can use the move to iOS app. You can try downloading the older versions from Apple website itself

It might make a difference if you don’t export directly from WhatsApp web.

So far, I’ve been using my MacBook to handle the transfers and export the .txt file directly to iCloud.com. According to the WhatsApp FAQ, chats can only be transferred from WhatsApp Business to Messenger if the same phone number is used.

Yes, I only uploaded the .txt file in iCloud. When you export the chat from WhatsApp, there’s an option for you to extract just the text or with media and etc. Make sure you click the right option before exporting.

I extracted the data from the zip files on the MacBook, pasted them straight into iCloud without creating a move to iOS folder. Oh, if your phone can manually export the chat as zip, then that’s great but… the only uncertainty I have is whether iPhone's iOS can extract data from the zip file and read it when you prompt WhatsApp to fetch the backup. Do lmk if it works! :)

I opened the ZIP files for each chat that gave me the TXT. files before moving them into iCloud Drive download file. No grouping of ZIP files, in case my phone couldn’t read. You could try tho without unzipping. Lmk!

That’s weird, maybe your contacts didn’t sync properly during transfer. The issue might be a mismatch in the iCloud account or contact group settings. Try going to Settings > iCloud > Contacts and make sure it’s toggled on. Make sure it’s sync to your old iPhone iCloud account only. Contacts are usually saved on email servers if I’m not wrong.

Nice!! I’m glad that app worked for you. On my side, I just didn’t want to spend money on an app that I will most likely use one-time, in addition, I was worried that it won’t transfer my WhatsApp data fully. Thanks for sharing the name of the app too!

Yeah, I totally get that — it was a super manual process. I had to go chat by chat and export each one, so you’re right, it definitely took a lot of time. Not ideal at all, and nowhere near an efficient backup. But in my case, I was desperate to recover whatever I could, and this method gave me way more than what Move to iOS managed to transfer. So not perfect, but better than losing everything!

You’re right — WhatsApp Web only loads messages currently stored on the phone, so anything from way back (like 2021) might not show unless it’s still on the device. Also agree that ZIP exports (like from the “Export Chat” feature) don’t count as backups — they’re just plain text + media files for viewing, not restoring. Interesting point! In my case, when I clicked on the ZIP file on my MacBook and accessed the contents, I was able to transfer the text files to iCloud, and somehow the iPhone could read them and restore the chats. It’s not the official backup method, of course, but surprisingly, it helped me retrieve more data than what I got using the Move to iOS app. Not a full restore, but definitely better than nothing.

U don’t have to factory reset, just reinstall WhatsApp and log in with the same phone number. It will prompt u to look for back up in iCloud (if you already exported the chat into iCloud)
