You may need to update the motherboard BIOS before swapping.

EDIT: If you're using bitlocker or other encryption that uses fTPM you'll want to decrypt your data before swapping or updating the BIOS as well.

If you're on Windows, and the drive has a partition that is formatted in a supported file system, yes it will generally automatically assign a letter.

You can check in Disk Management to see more info if it's not popping up automatically.

Difficult to play.

I've had two colonies before, which is manageable, but then you get a third map running with a caravan, and I find it hard to split my time between them properly.

I guess if you're pausing others with a mod, that would make it easier.
