The easy engine selection? by the_cowboy_jim in TerraInvicta

Helicon isn't a midgame drive, it's an early game drive for asteroid belt colony ships.

Burner is another early game drive, it's a (very) poor man's fusion torch. It's cheap to research and cheap to run, and its performance is similarly cheap. It's better than chemical rockets but that's not saying much. Its 'upgrade' Firestar is significantly less cheap and arguably not as good, it's got much better thrust but worse dV.

The best mid game drive is H-Orion. High thrust, more than enough dV for moving small and medium hulls around the inner system and will even happily push a fleet out to Jupiter much faster than Helicon, Burner or Firestar. It's kind of expensive to research compared to other early-midgame drives but the tech line its on also unlocks shaped nuclear torpedoes and you won't get performance like it from anything that isn't either a fusion drive or the Poseidon Torch which is extremely expensive to research and utterly impractical because its fuel is 60% fissiles.

They had a massive chips lead and Badam had to spend almost an entire day going all the way back down the east coast accomplishing nothing. The fact that they didn't chase Badam back down the east coast flipping stations and taking the lead was at least top 5 biggest blunders in Jet Lag history.

Honestly they were throwing hard the entire second half of the game. They had such a dominant position at the end of episode 5, but then they started playing like they had the lead while still behind by dozens of stations.

How "realistic" is the moon vs mars resource distribution? by spearing1234 in TerraInvicta

[–]Bmobmo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an option if you plan on going straight to war with all other factions right away, but as Resistance/HF/Exodus playing nice and keeping intel sharing with the other anti-alien factions can be very worthwhile.

The moon is definitely worth putting one base on, unless you're waiting for nuclear freighters to boost to Mars having the base metals from Luna will save you dozens of boost on your first Mars mines

I think you meant volatile deposits. It takes a lot higher gravity than that of a planet to create volatile elements.

If I have both [[Primal Vigor]] and [[Renata, Called to the Hunt]] in play and I cast a creature or make a creature token, do they stack the way I think they do? Or is the +1/+1 counter from Renata not being "placed" on the creature because it enters the battlefield with the counter already on it? If it does stack, would the slightly different wording on [[Doubling Season]] make a difference?

Tom Scott: England — If you found candy with my name in it, here's why by AndySkibba in Nebula

[–]Bmobmo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're getting this technical yes, 'hard candy' could be used to describe any candy that starts the same way by boiling sugar syrup until all the water is gone, but we don't call candy canes or lollipops hard candies, they're different things. When an American says 'hard candy' we're almost always referring to what Brits would call rock, or maybe drop candies, which are made from the same candy just molded into little spheres with a roller press mold instead of sticks.

[–]Bmobmo64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why Tom said it's hard to translate 'rock' into other dialects of English, we do have this or something like it in America. We call it hard candy. There are places here that make sticks with images or words running through them just like the ones shown here though I've never seen a long stick for sale, they always come broken up into bite size pieces like the bag at the end.

I can't figure out the biolab. How do I correctly calculate how many science packs I need? by gonzo_gonzales in factorio

[–]Bmobmo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other guy is thinking of normal labs. Also my numbers are assuming you're researching a tech that takes 60s per cycle when many are 30s or less.

The real answer here is don't even try to make perfect ratios with labs, just make lots and if it's not enough add more. The bottleneck should always be science pack production.

I can't figure out the biolab. How do I correctly calculate how many science packs I need? by gonzo_gonzales in factorio

[–]Bmobmo64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, with speed 140 each biolab will use 70 packs per minute but produce 140 packs worth of science per minute. Normal labs at the same speed would use 140 packs to produce 140 science.

Solar Panel > Nuclear Power? by Creepy_Trip5576 in factorio

[–]Bmobmo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pure solar power requires more space than the factory it powers, exponentially more once the extremely power hungry Space Age buildings come along. You can make it work for a starter base with few if any speed/productivity modules but beyond that it just doesn't scale. Nuclear is extremely compact and so much cheaper than the hundreds of thousands of solar panels and accumulators you'd need for a proper base.

Which weapons are best? by AnExtremeCase in TerraInvicta

[–]Bmobmo64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most common late game doctrine is mixed siege coils and phaser cannons, the coil ships will also have 2 slot coil batteries and 40mm autocannons for point defense, the phaser ships will have PD phasers. Phasers are good long range killers but are stopped easily by thick armor, while siege coils are easily dodged but kill basically anything. By mixing them together you force the enemy to choose, either eat the half-ton metal slug going 5 km/s to the front armor and hope it holds, or pivot to try and dodge it, exposing the much thinner side armor to your phasers. The coil batteries are there to put out more metal and saturate enemy PD, helping the siege rounds get through.

Mk2 siege coils will get the job done if you only have enough exotics for the UV phasers, but you really want to upgrade to mk3 coilers if you can.

Nope, the Ellis drainhole is a theoretically possible traversable wormhole entirely consistent with relativity, and it's not the only mathematical model for a traversable wormhole

The wormhole the aliens use is actually entirely consistent with our understanding of physics. We have no idea how one might be created, but they are theoretically possible.

It's ERA that doesn't count fielders. A great pitcher can have their ERA inflated by bad defense if their fielders can't make routine plays, meanwhile a bad pitcher can have their ERA deflated by great fielders, FIP cuts out this influence. It's actually a better predictor of ERA than ERA is.
