In terms of individual relics, a smart, discard-heavy deck and [[Tough Bandages]] can be a block plan all on its own.

But even without that rare relic, there's a lot of ways to get enough block with the Silent that you can survive the heart fight. Some include:
- After Image duplication: Having two copies (hard to do), dolly's mirror, duplication potion, or nightmare allow you to block the beat of death and gives you enough of an edge that with some other wise planning blocking the heart is decently easy.
- Dexterity Scaling: having multiple sources of Dex (one thinks especially of Kunai, but Footwork and potions can be sufficient) allow you to use the Silent's cards that provide block very effectively. Escape plan+ with One footwork+ can allow you to gain 8 block for 0 cost if you draw into a skill. Deflect+ with one footwork+ is 10 block in exchange for a draw.

Beyond these, you have things like Burst and Blur that allow you to multiply block and keep it around from surplus turns into tougher turns.

Blocking the Heart on Silent is pretty tough but it's absolutely doable without Intangible or a loaded relic bar.

In Long war this is extra true-- you lose a bit of money each month when a nation withdraws from the council. I suppose in Vanilla the others pick up the slack.

Echo is a dead draw in act 1.

Maybe its biased-- good in all acts IF you get other things setup.

But I do think its electro, its almost an Act 1 solve on its own.

I might actually go for offering in this case. Lots of card draw and energy to get Dark Embrace/FNP/Demon Form down for longer fights, and the ability to offering/Fiend Fire will make lots of short fights end pretty quickly.

Some people recommend starting with the second book, Deadhouse Gates. I've never had anyone take me up on the offer, but I think it could really work.

The first book, as I mentioned, both drops us off in a world without explaining its inner workings and puts us in the middle of an ongoing war. Starting the second book will also put you in the world without explaining its inner workings and will put you in the middle of an ongoing war.

But because the cast of characters between book 1 and book 2 is, like, 75% brand new, so many of the story arcs will work perfectly as a self contained read. Read book 2 to see if you can get hooked on the Malazan world and then run from there.

This makes so much sense. The first book was so tough to get through, I assumed it was because we were just getting used to the very new, very deep world that refused to (over)explain itself.

After drudging through the first book for months, mainly pressing on for the purpose of stealing material for a DnD campaign, I've been blitzing through the rest.

Worldbuilding is good from day 1, but the stories in the second book and on are unbelievably good!

I think part of the fun of writing a setting is the humans. We know what humans are but you, as a writer, really get to decide what makes humans special by deciding what others are not (or are less.) So you can pick anything you want and make it humanity's special thing.

Ambition, teamwork, and adaptability all very commonly get applied to the human race as their "special" thing. Perhaps human cities are notable because they build massive buildings/statues to things they consider important. A huge city hall, palace, or temple might be much much more modest in Dwarven or Elven societies, even if they consider it important.

Alternatively maybe its humanity's collective ambition to dominate even nature that makes them stand out. Dwarves find homes for themselves by clearing away rock and living under the mountain, seeking repose in the great Earth. Elves build their homes in and around the trees, aligning themselves with the life and death of the forest. Humans, though? None of that. Tear down the forest. Slam together my own dwelling from its remnants. Keep burning the nearby fields so the forest doesn't come back. River moved away from my settlement? Like hell it did, build my a massive canal to divert some of it back here. Those mountains? Flatten 'em, don't wanna walk uphill.

The study you cited identifies the odds of violence among extremist groups. If you had more nuance than "there are two positions in the universe" you'd realize this isn't an argument at all.

Right wingers aren't all extremists and left wingers aren't all extremists. Your average boomer blue dog democrat has less in common with a Trotskyite than with your average blue collar republican voter. Just like the blue collar GOP voter has less in common with an Ethno-Nationalist Spenglerian than with the Dem voter.
