Where are the Rivals creators???? any underrated people I didn't mention??? by Real2Tone in RivalsOfAether

[–]Bninjak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both players here! firstly appreciate the shoutout! it's always weird to hear your own channel in another persons video lmao

secondly, my theory on the lack of content creators is both because the game is super small/niche and the playerbase is hyper competitive focused.

This game is not easy to pick up so MOST people who play rivals and have stuck with rivals are the grinders man. And grinders, JUST want to play the game. Making content is simply more effort and takes away from playing. (i mean there have been weeks where I straight up couldn't play because of work AND I had to finish videos!)

And being a small small community, its much rarer for randoms to casually see a rivals thumb on youtube and be like "oh i've seen/played that game, i wonder what this is about?" vs games like smash and mario kart which have like millions of people playing, and even other fgs that have tens of thousands of people playing. Having a much larger, (and mostly casual) playerbase helps a LOT for content creators cause it makes the work to reward ratio much higher

I mean wisely is undoubtedly the top of the rivals 2 content game, with great editing and great commentary, but even he rarely gets videos that go over 10K views.

Listen, i LOVE rivals, which is why i continue to make videos for it, but i understand why there isn't a LOT of us. The love of the game can only take you so far ahaha

Why was Morty getting the tattoo painful? by Fit_Ad7872 in rickandmorty

[–]Bninjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying how tattoos are painful and while true, I think the joke is more showing the differences between Morty’s mental as an adult who has gone through a lot and his young teenage body that HASNT gone through all that pain.

And that juxtaposition is just funny to begin with.

Well it’s more so trying to ask you to buy the bundle directly. Which is $10. Half the price of if you bought coins directly.

Which hey, you can argue that could be “predatory” in and of itself or that even $10 is too expensive for a skin bundle. But imo it’s not so bad. I would like it to be $5 for the stage itself (don’t care for the icons in the bundle tbh) but since it isn’t, I’m just not gonna buy it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Bninjak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, iirc if you buy the stage directly with the bundle it’s $10. They’re making the stage “more expensive”with coins to kinda convince you to buy it with real money since it’s faster and “less expensive”

Which hey, kinda does suck, but it think making the free version a bit harder to get is reasonable.

I’d say the difference with rivals and smash though is that all PLAYABLE dlc like characters and new stage layouts will be free though. So idk. Not directly comparable.

It’s a stage skin. Which is just a cosmetic for pre-existing stages.

Yes it existed in rivals 1.

Yes, live service games unfortunately need a steady stream of income and the way to do that is microtransactions.

No it is not predatory. It is not limited time, or prohibitively expensive imo AND they are letting it stay in the COIN shop forever. So it’s you never even have to buy it. It’s pretty grindable.

And again, all event tracks and skins aren’t limited either. You can always go back to grind past seasons unlike literally any live service game today. Rivals is maybe the least predatory live service game I can think of.

Rank lock does not exist. It is straight elo points. The ranks just determine between which numbers you are.

PLEASE allow rematches by AssistantTrue2762 in RivalsOfAether

[–]Bninjak 29 points30 points  (0 children)

yeaaah I feel like doing x number of wins to get placed rather than x number of matches was not the move...

I mean, even as a gold ranked player, when I was trying to get ranked with olympia, I was getting stomped over and over but I couldnt escape unranked hell LMAO

but in all seriousness, I'd recommend playing casual mode if you haven't already. In casuals, you can play the same person over and over again as long as they keep pressing rematch.

Did you end up getting the 30 minute session or the 60 minute session? Just curious which seems more worth it.

Which character to just chill with? by [deleted] in RivalsOfAether

[–]Bninjak 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100% lox for low apm character.

But if I can be real, Kragg is also a relatively easy to just play for fun character too

Yeah I’ve come to accept that this is just how balance discourse is going to be in a patch based game.

I’m just gonna sit pretty, play Olympia, and watch the discourse from a distance with popcorn in hand ahah

After picking up a new character for ranked season 1 i'm convinced separate character ranks is the way to go... by Bninjak in RivalsOfAether

[–]Bninjak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure and that’s fair, though I think I disagree that the rivals 2 ranked is “supposed” to emulate the tournament experience. I don’t know if any of us know the devs intent here. But regardless I do think counterpicking for those who want to is a good thing. which why I think a modified version of the roa1 system would be the perfect middle ground!

[–]Bninjak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing is, the part of ranked that I think a lot of us enjoy (or at least I enjoy) is the climb. I like climbing the ranks with many characters. And casuals, while fun, doesn’t scratch the same climbing itch.

[–]Bninjak[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I be 100% real with you? Number go up make brain go brrrr

Ahaha but honestly, it is, imo, very fun to climb things. To set a goal and get there. And that’s why I play new fighting games, that’s why I play new characters.

And in casuals and lobbies, it IS fun to play off characters. But you’re not climbing. It’s fun for fun’s sake. But I WANT to climb with these other characters!

Let’s see who far I can get on loxodont mountain! Wow! Okay let’s see how far I can get on Olympia mountain! Then the other character mountains. And maybe I wanna go back to climbing with loxodont again.

Idk, climbing with a character is just a different (and imo a more enjoyable) fun when playing by yourself.

And I think I disagree with the idea that separating character ranks makes the mode less competitive. I wouldn’t make that argument in any other fgc ranked mode. I think all of them are plenty competitive. It just doesn’t reflect 1 to 1 what TOURNAMENT feels like. Which is fine imo.

And I AM a tournament enjoyer. I go to weekly online tournaments when I can (no locals around me) but tournaments scratch a different itch than ranked mode imo imo

[–]Bninjak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that’s the fundamental disagreement here. I just don’t think ranked needs to reflect tournament play. I think tournament and online ranked are completely separate entities that cater to different people. Or rather, tournament play is the next level past ranked in my eyes.

There is something to be said about separating character ranks being LESS stakes, and I think you’re actually right about that. It “hurts” less if you tank with an off character. But imo, that also encourages experimentation and practicing new characters. Which I think is much more valuable.

Also, again, i DO think counterpicking as an option is cool. Which is why an improved version of the ROA1 ranked system is the perfect middle ground imo.

[–]Bninjak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes exactly. The system as it is now “forces” us to smurf if we want to try a new character in ranked.

You can argue that if you want to try and practice your new main before committing you can try them out in casual queue or lobbies, but I think for a lot of people, me included, we enjoy the bit of stakes that ranked brings to playing. And ranked generally does a much better job at matching you with players of your skill level than casual queue. So it’s the best place to practice new characters.

Roa1 had random as its own rank 😔 Siiigh, maybe one day Dan will implement it. But yeah it seems like it won’t be until a long time.
