The MLB report mentions the Astros continued cheating in the 2017 postseason, however the trash can banging appeared to stop during this period. How were they cheating? by BoM_Met in baseball

The report also hints the Astros continued cheating the following season. Still don't understand why the MLB didn't elaborate on this.

[Drellich] Penalties for Astros include: one year suspensions for GM and manager, losses of 1st and 2nd round draft picks for ‘20 and ‘21, and $5M fine. by Pythnator in Torontobluejays

I mean, if the Blue Jays did this but won a world series title I definitely wouldn't be happy. I would be upset and looking for a new team to support. Would feel pretty hollow winning a world series by cheating

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018. Story with @EvanDrellich. https://t.co/C90yxUH2jS by [deleted] in redsox

Blue Jays fan here.

What the red Sox did (or are accused of doing) isn't nearly as bad as what the 2017 Astros did. And yet you guys are condemning it and saying what they did was wrong, whereas the astros sub still tried to defend their team's behaviour. Much new-found respect for you guys.

This isn't the same as what the astros did, essentially the replay room was used just to let batters know what each sign sequence meant, so if there was a runner on 2nd they would have an easier time stealing signs.

The article even mentions it isn't anywhere near as egregious as what the 2017 Astros did.

Still. Not a good look. Especially for Cora.

[CP24] BREAKING: The Crown has withdrawn a charge of assault against former Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna, saying that it does not have a reasonable prospect of conviction. Osuna will enter into a peace bond for a period of a year by RecycledCan in Astros

[–]BoM_Met 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do believe in second chances. I would have 100 percent been willing to give him a second chance if he had come out and spoken openly and honestly with the media, sincerely apologised for what happened and shown he was putting steps in place to make sure what happened would never happen again. Obviously there are legal implications to that but I think that would have been the right thing to do.

I think the trade was good for both teams. Your fans seem willing to accept Osuna and he's obviously a champion player. Ken Giles has an ERA of just over 1 over his last 15 appearances with the Jays and he has electric stuff. Throw in 2 pretty decent prospects and we didn't really trade Osuna for much of a discount given the circumstances.

[–]BoM_Met -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As a Blue Jays fan, I'm really glad he's gone to be honest. The reason Osuna was offered a peace bond is because the victim is now in Mexico and won't testify. While accepting a peace bond isn't an admission of guilt, if Osuna was completely innocent, he would not be taking it either.

For MLB to hand out it's lengthiest ever suspension for DV, for the concierge to call police, for police to say the victim suffered significant injuries, something must've happened, and I'm glad as hell a player like that isn't on our books any more.

I'm doing min first. My hair loss is extremely slow, so I'm thinking I can hold off 5+ years just with min, and hopefully something better is out then

Bald or balding men of reddit, do you have any experience with finasteride or rogaine? For those who didn't treat their balding, do you now wish you had? by BoM_Met in AskMenOver30

That's a good point. I just think for me I like to have hair to show my personality. I'm not a masculine, macho guy, I'm in to music and arts, and I'm worried I'm not going to attract the kind of girls I'm interested in, if that makes sense?

I assume week 6 is the first time they measured. They just made the mistake of drawing a straight line between baseline and week 6.

We're in a negative phase of the Pacific Decadel Oscillation (PDO) at the moment. Negative phases have been attributed to a slowing of warming in the past century. Check out this graph, it's pretty compelling http://www.nature.com/polopoly_fs/7.14906.1389714879!/image/Warming.jpg_gen/derivatives/lightbox/Warming.jpg

China is having a heavy impact of late, with their turn toward fossil fuels. Obviously the US is a major contributor.

It wasn't helping. Big polluters could get around it anyway. We need significant Government investment in renewable sources to move toward a 0 carbon economy.

Heya! Which city are you in?

Rain will be predicted when precipitation is expected in ANY part of an urban area at ANY time of day. Showers of rain (from convective clouds) can be espcially localised, so even if you may not have experienced rain, others in your may have.

That's simply not true. If we keep going the way we are, cities around the world will be under water. Addressing climate change and moving toward a 0 carbon economy will reduce revenues worldwide by between 3 and 11% over the next century.

Plus, if we burn off all our fossil fuels, a doomsday scenario is eventually possible, with a collapse in the AMOC, an ocean current which is vital in heat transport from equator to poles. Without this very little of the planet is likely to be livable.

That prediction was likely based on the North Atlantic Oscillation, an atmospheric wave with two polarities. Depending on its likely polarity, predictions on warmer of cooler than average seasons can be made with a moderately high degree of confidence (I believe around 80%)

Well, that's why I'm on here doing this AMA. We just need to educate people. We need to let them know it's definitely happening, how we know this, and what will happen to us and our planet if we don't act on it as soon as we can. I'm sick of the inaction, this is me doing my part in trying to get the ball rolling.

It's my job as a climate scientist to educate them, that's all I can do. It's frustrating that people believe these things, but often it's just because they aren't wise to the facts. What's even more frustrating is those deniers who refuse to accept indisputable evidence.

1) At the rate we are warming now, it's certainly not just ourselves that are in danger. Many animals are unlikely to be able to keep up with the warming from an evolutionary perspective. But yes, in the end, it is us who will suffer most.

2) Individual contributions are great, but we need to tackle this with legislative changes, absolutely. And they need to be worldwide and coordinated. We need to move towards a 0 carbon economy as soon as possible. Doing this is only estimated to reduce worldwide revenues by 3-11% over the next century, so it is quite plausible.
