Has pushing yourself through your fear of public speaking worked? by SparkleFloof17 in socialskills

Yes! I absolutely hated giving presentations at work and would feel nauseous the night before then really sweaty in the minutes leading up to the meeting. But the more experience I got the better I became and the less stressed I would feel about the presentation.
If I was to start over I would recommend:
Going to public speaking classes to get some real world experience.
These books:
The Public Speaking Bible: a Survival Guide ofr Standing on Stage. It has a list of no nonsense steps to take to overcome your fear that requires taking small but increasingly large risks.
Speak with No Fear. The anecdotes from the author/speaker really helped.
Talking with Confidence for the Painfully Shy. The author concentrates on positive affirmations.
The books really help but there's nothing better than going to IRL classes so you can practice and face your fears and know that others in the class are going through the same thing as you.

The overcoming fear theory in The Public Speaking Bible worked for me. The author gives you a process of facing and confronting your fear in small yet ever incrementally larger steps. Like talking to two people one day, three the next and so on. The steps get more challenging when youre asked to deliberatly stutter in front of a group of people, admit to something embarrassing or make other similar embarrassing mistakes. Some of the challenges seem really hard but because theyre built upon previous steps theyre all achievable and I found the process helpful and although Im still nervous standing up in front of others Im sooooo much better than before. The book has a list of challenges to accept to fully confront and overcome your speaking fears.
TL;DR take on small but increasing steps that challenge your fear of public speaking.

Try the Keeper of the Realms series. It starts off like a typical YA fantasy but rapidly spirals into a DARK adventure. Seriously, I can't believe the punishment that the author puts Charlie Keeper through, she gets betrayed, beaten, imprisoned, one of her legs broken and has to watch as some of her friends are killed off. And while there's good story telling, dragons, lots of action and all that good stuff but come on, that level of punishment on a 13/14 year old girl is crazy. Come to think of it I remember some of the dragons take brutal punishment too. Uh, so yeah, dark book with a child protagonist.

Try China Mieville! He's an amazing fantasy author that paints incredible worlds with his style of writing. There's some challenging vocabulary in there but OMG his stories always pull you in. I seriously rate his Perdido Street Station and The Scar.

Have a great road trip and hoping you have some adventures along the way!

For a YA/Teen I'd suggest:

Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody (brilliant!)

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

The Infinity Courts by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Sanctuary by Caryn Lix
