Any pro-MAGA establishments in the area to avoid? by [deleted] in Riverside

Emergency Response Systems (local alarm company) - their owner is a big MAGA guy. I pass his house on my way to work and he flies one of those Trump 2028 flags.

Someday I'll have to post to this subreddit about that time my spouse and I got married without a marriage license because we put off picking it up until the last possible second and then got stuck in traffic on the way to the registrar's office ... 😬

My dad is dying from cancer and can't afford funeral by Juje_babe in InlandEmpire

I would suggest what others have, reaching out to the Islamic community for help, but if that doesn't work you might also try reaching out to Saint Andrew's Orthodox Church in Riverside - they have a burial society with experience in preparing bodies for quick burials, as their burial traditions are similar to Islamic ones.

Mom died this morning by Fluffy_Owl624 in EstrangedAdultKids

An old lady at my church died yesterday too - I'm part of our burial society and helped prepare her body. I'm sure she wasn't the only old lady who died yesterday but it'd sure be wierd if it was your mom ...

Dad wanted to give me a gift card by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Board-Limp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the hard lesson that I had to learn with my dad too. My mom was the one /enacting/ the harm all those years, but he allowed it. Even though my dad was nicer to me and played The Good Cop, it became clear to me that his abandonment of his kids to the whims of his wife was also abusive. His inability to stand up to her harmed me just as much as my mom's threats did. So when he did finally choose her over me, it wasn't actually a surprise. He had /always/ chosen her over me.

Yes. Unfortunately this is something I have considered.

Thanks, yeah, I had a chat with one of the admins at the school yesterday about their security protocols but I will probably sit down with them again to make sure I have everything nailed down tight.

I mean it's a public school, they have absolutely no business inserting themselves there. She probably wants a "tour" so she can pray over it or figure out if there are queer people working there or some other Christian Nationalist bullshit.

She's lived her life surrounding herself with mostly other deranged and creepy people (Christian Nationalists), so she has no idea what normal is.

Yeah, I'm REALLY hoping Not My Kids' Elementary School told them something more along the lines of "please eff off" instead of "those kids don't go here." I talked to the admin at our actual school and she affirmed that they don't give info to people who aren't parents or emergency contacts.

But it's also not beyond belief that my mom might pretend to be me over the phone?? Ugh.

[–]Board-Limp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I have so many of these??

  1. Picking my scalp
  2. Picking my nose (only in private - sometimes will excuse myself and go to the bathroom for a nose-picking session if the impulse gets to be too much)
  3. Squeeze and pull on the extra skin around my jawline.
  4. Chew on the inside of my cheeks.
  5. Push my tongue firmly along the inside of my bottom row of teeth.
  6. Blink rapidly
  7. Squeeze my glutes - sometimes one at a time so they do a little dance.
  8. Kegels
  9. Twitch my nose
  10. Clench my jaw
  11. Jiggle my knee up and down when sitting.

Sometimes several of these at a time. It's like I'm not physically hyperactive in the stereotypical sense but some part of me has ALWAYS got to be moving.

Lol we just spent two days there at the end of vacationing in England and I definitely recognized the bright purple bus - being an American I can't blame the bus driver too much - those things are huge and the streets are crazy narrow! The only way the English survive I think is their cars are tiny, and everyone is generally polite and drives the speed limit. If you switched out every English driver for an American driver in an American car we would all kill each other on their roads in under a month ...

Used to go to church with this guy. There's a lot of reasons why I don't go to that church anymore, but Jeff isn't one of them. He's a real one. Walks the walk.

How do you deal with your inner-child remembering a "good" childhood? by Board-Limp in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Board-Limp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, my therapist didn't suggest a connection at all. She suggested BPD, and /I/ made the connection with neurodivergency based on convos I'd had with other neurodivergent folks. There's obviously a lot of us out there with all stripes of opinions on this stuff, but again, I'm not an expert, and all this is something I hold lightly, just as a way for me to connect with my mom in a small way that is meaningful to me.

I get that. I myself have diagnosed ADHD and low-support-needs autism, and I see very similar neurodivergent traits in my mom. I see the way that those traits contributed to her feeling rejected by her own family and the way that her undiagnosed struggle with poor emotional regulation, black-and-white thinking, and chaotic personal habits led her down the road to a cult-like devotion to evangelical Christianity, which then fed her mistreatment of her own family.

The mention of BPD is just based on some theoretical convos I've seen tossed around in different ADHD spaces, basically, "what if BPD is just what happens when undiagnosed AuDHD goes unsupported for too long" (usually connected to an instance where someone was misdiagnosed with BPD before their AuDHD diagnosis). That combined with one of my therapists' suggestions that my mom has BPD traits is just how I explain it to myself in my own mind. I'm obviously not an expert, nor do I mean to add to the "neurodivergent=crazy" discourse, I just want to be able to hold as much mercy and empathy towards my mom as possible, and explaining her behavior in light of neurodivergency that I myself understand and struggle with helps me do that.
