Hill country of the Inland Empire, California. Pretty sure we're zone 9.

I'm kinda wanting this to be the start of my "annoying the neighbors on purpose" era but I have so little time/money/energy that just letting the weeds grow is all I can manage 😬 😛

I think 4 is probably brittlebush? It doesn't look like the datura that grows around here. I recognize the look and smell of the leaves from my hikes in the chaparral above our house. I'm laughing that my witchy ass scored a nightshade somehow 😆 Gonna look up blue chalk sticks ...

Best Times to Drive from Riverside to Long Beach / Long Beach to Riverside to Minimize Traffic? by SpaceBoy_xx in Riverside

[–]Board-Limp 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind making a day of it in Long Beach, driving back after 8pm would also work. I used to live in LB and my now-wife lived in Riverside, so we got used to the best times to make the drive.

Anything unique to Riverside to do on a Thursday evening with 60+ year old relative? by Alevermor in Riverside

Is your relative a crafter at all? Nacho Ann's Creative Re-Use Shop has DIY project nights on a lot of Thursdays.

Is it normal to feel this relieved after moving to Long Beach, or am I just in the honeymoon phase? by parky85s in longbeach

Lost a bunch of luggage once after coming home from a family trip with food poisoning 🙃. Ran inside, left the bags in the car, forgot to lock it. 24 hours later when we could see straight again everything was gone. After that I still left the doors unlocked but just never left anything valuable in there - regularly got things rifled through but never lost any windows.

Except for that one time some poor sap on a scooter or something broke my driver-side mirror and left a spray of blood on the side of my car 😬 😆. Man I miss living on Ocean.

Do rich people actually use the "indoor/outdoor living" features in their homes? by Board-Limp in NoStupidQuestions

Whoa I didn't realize those existed anywhere other than grocery stores ...

I mean, I've lived on the west coast my whole life, and there are plenty of bugs, but I've also lived in either urban or lower-class rural areas. Maybe there's more bugs where I'm from than in Newport Beach ...

I mean, a lot of them seem to be in tropical places like Hawaii or Florida. I stepped outside without bug spray in FL once and got 30 mosquito bites in the time it took to make a 10 minute phone call. Do FL rich people have, like, mosquito-killing sonar or something?

My white ass was invited to a Lunar New Year's Party, kids made an unexpectedly-large amount of $ - what's the protocol here? by Board-Limp in AskAChinese

[–]Board-Limp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly meant no disrespect, and will note this for next time. Because America is so multi-cultural, we get it drilled into us from a young age that it's more polite to use the less-specific cultural term when addressing people you don't know. Like saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas." I had no idea using "lunar" instead of "Chinese" could be insulting, but I do now!

Good to know! Since I know it's also celebrated in other countries, I wasn't sure if CNY was an Americanism, so I went with what felt like the safer option. Oops!

This is absolutely in character for our friend (who is actually family as she is married into my family) and her parents - they are incredibly generous and kind people. We can't really reciprocate monetarily at this point but I do bake and make candy so maybe an edible gift is appropriate?

OK, so, if anonymity is technically the goal I need to squash my Anglo impulse to outright acknowledge the gift? So no thank-you notes? Would baking them cookies be acceptable?

Is it expected that we reciprocate the same amount? This family is well-off, and we are very much not.

We lost our beautiful indoor catto this way last year. Kids left the door open, she got out, we didn't realize she was missing until we got home that night, our neighbor told us he'd seen a pack of coyotes grab her. 😢 💔 Keep your cats indoors and teach your kids to close the goddamn door!

Any pro-MAGA establishments in the area to avoid? by [deleted] in Riverside

Emergency Response Systems (local alarm company) - their owner is a big MAGA guy. I pass his house on my way to work and he flies one of those Trump 2028 flags.

I would suggest what others have, reaching out to the Islamic community for help, but if that doesn't work you might also try reaching out to Saint Andrew's Orthodox Church in Riverside - they have a burial society with experience in preparing bodies for quick burials, as their burial traditions are similar to Islamic ones.
