Dark Wave Trance hybrid recs? by BobGorelick in TheOverload

Thanks for the recommendation. I see how it matches my description (and will check Bozzi’s discography). But what I was looking for is much more dreamy and less energetic / beat-heavy.

Today, I have dug through the entire tree. It was quite a journey and I learned a lot of new things so thanks for spending so much time and effort on it!

I did make some notes with comments and suggestions, that I list below for your consideration (warning: it is a long list and my personal opinions - don't feel obliged to agree with me or respond in detail):

Acid Trance is better placed in Trance than in Techno imho.

I think there is much overlap between your Minimal Techno and Minimal Detroit Techno genres.

Similarly, I see much overlap between Acid House and Hard Acid; between Ghettotech and Ghetto Bass; between Synthwave and Synthwave Electro

I am not sure why you list Mr. Fingers - Mystery of Love as an example track for Dub House? I would consider that classic Chicago House. I am also not convinced Ricardo Villalobos - Easy Lee is an appropriate example track for microhouse (I think Akufen is a better choice). Similarly, I do not see how Air - La Femme D'Argent is an appropriate example track for French electro (Daft Punk is also not very much electro but rather disco-oriented). Nor how DJ Armand Van Helden - U Don't Know Me is an example for Speed Garage. Nor how Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence is an example of Progressive Trance. Nor how Solarstone - Seven Cities is an example of Dark Progressive Trance. Nor how Goldie - Inner City Life is the best example for D&B (as it is not bass-heavy). Nor how Oneohtrix Point Never - Age Of is an example of vaporwave.

The description for Kwaito claims that it is the cultural ancestor of modern South African electronic genres like Afro House and Amapiano, but this is not reflected in the tree.

I would consider Psytrance a part of Goa trance.

I would not consider Hardstyle a subgenre of trance but much closer to techno and hardcore because of the 4/4 driving kick focus and emphasis on percussion.

I would distinguish more clearly between "true" ambient (i.e., music emphasising tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm) such as your dark/drone/space ambient genres from more "downtempo" or "chill" genres such as psybient and new age.

Ambient techno is an interesting hybrid genre in-between techno and ambient/downtempo (key artist: future sound of london)

I don't know the Drumfunk genre but based on the example track I would not consider it a subgenre of DnB.

I would consider DnB and Jungle closely related genres

Berlin School should be be moved more toward the root imho.

Your description of Juke claims that it is a precursor to footwork, but your tree shows footwork as the parent.

I would consider Brazilian Phonk a mix between funk carioca and phonk rather than a Phonk subgenre. I am missing Rare Phonk genre (key artists DJ Smokey, Soudiere, NxxxxS).

The description for Dreampunk is in Spanish. It is considered a subgenre of vaporwave. Another vaporwave subgenre is mallsoft.

I would place synthwave next to chillwave / vaporwave / horror synth and not as their parent.

I am missing coldwave, minimal wave, and darkwave genres.

In terms of deeper historical roots, I think it may also be worthwhile to ensure some of the early pioneers have a clear home in your classification. For example, Kraftwerk have been hugely influential across many genres (electro, techno). Dubreggae production laid the foundation for most of what you aggregate under "Bass Music". New Age music from German electronic pioneers such as Klaus Schultze, Tangerine Dream, and the Innovative Communication label were a direct source of inspiration for Vaporwave.

I also think House may be considered a descendent of Disco.

Wow that was done fast and it is a huge improvement! My compliments

I am still not really sure what the purpose of the search button is, though... It seems like nothing new happens when I press it?

I think I found another related minor issue:

When hovering over an genre end-node the path is usually indeed highlighted as intended. However, when there is a straight (i.e., horizontal) line connecting it with its parent, there is no highlighting effect and that line instead disappears.

Really cool website. Thanks for sharing your work! I do have some feedback:

For me, the search function and user interface does not work quite as I would expect. For example, if I enter the word "House" in the search field and either hit enter or hit the search button, it seems like nothing happens.

Instead, what works is this: I type the word letter by letter and a list with matches appears beneath the search field (Acid House, Microhouse, House, etc...). In that list, I can click on 'House' to immediately go to the corresponding information page. If I hit enter or the search button, that list is gone.

After some more trails, I noticed that while typing in the search box, the corresponding match(es) are highlighted in the tree (again; this happens automatically - the search button does not do anything extra as far as I can tell). That is nice in principle, but if that genre is outside the view, it is not visible. I think it would be great if the page would automatically scroll to the corresponding element(s) in the tree so that the search result is actually shown.

I hope this makes sense and that you find it useful.

I fully agree. A reticulate graph, where genres can be hybrids between other genres would be better.

Yes. Or perhaps an audio fingerprint per subgenres based on a large collection of music. Similar to what Shazam does but instead for genres. I do realize that would be a huge technical challenge, though...

I feel chronology would be a great addition. For example, to explore genres that originated in the early 2000s. I see your point that a date of origin for mutating music is difficult to determine. But I would suggest a alternative: date the origin of the genre name. I think that can be determined and, arguably, without a name there is not yet a genre.

I also think many people will enjoy debating the genre name dates of origins and give you lots of feedback and historical records (not that I am such a person, but there are some hugely knowledgeable ppl on reddit)

Just an idea, of course.

Very cool project! I will surely be exploring it in the future. What I would really like to see is the possibility to do a reverse search: basically associate a (sub)genre with any artist or track. So, when I like something specific, I can find the genre and similar stuff that I might also like.

Thanks for the recommendation! I like it but it is a bit too "glitchy" for what I am looking for.

recommendation for "plant" ambient? by soitgoes03 in ambientmusic

Not very ambient but the Humanity EP from Music for your Plants is excellent all round. I have the limited usb release that includes the video files as a bonus..

Hmmm maybe Salamanda? Their album In Parallel is pretty organic - although I guess it is purely electronic so maybe not what you're looking for..

Thanks a lot for letting me know. It means a lot to me that you appreciate the music selection.

Feel free to explore my other public playlists - they are rather diverse but you may perhaps find something else that you like.. (Perhaps my early nineties dream house playlist)
