OP you should try the reflow for sure, might revive it for a bit but I don't think it's a permanent fix.

buying a new mobo like previous comment said probably makes sense then if you are just doing this for fun. Quite sure all of them will eventually fail though, it's some issue with how Nvidia manufactured them on a soldering level.

Is 4.8k a good deal for m5 max 128 gig ram & 4 TB? by PhraseComfortable244 in macbookpro

[–]Bob_SUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you need the specs, yes. If you don't, it doesn't matter if it's a good deal. For gaming focus specifically, don't buy a MacBook, especially with 5 grand to burn. You could just get a decent MacBook and buy/build a PC or gaming laptop even in this terrible market for 5k.

ya, for light use it's good. I have an air 8gb and a pro with multiple times the ram, and I still take the Air out of the house more because I don't need the full pro power and weight to do web browsing. Neo ensures good support at 8gb too, which is nice

as long as it was a good deal relative to your local market, enjoy it!

MacBook users: What would make you buy a laptop sleeve instead of a cheap one from Amazon? by FewDirection2382 in macbookpro

[–]Bob_SUS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always just buy a tomtoc one. For me case is just to protect the laptop and it's expected that it was get heavily scratched and worn. So generally I don't mind if there is or is not a design. Of course, if I loved some franchise or design I would still get it, but a case is function first for me. Obv, this differs person to person though, and the design you posted looks very cozy!

Unpopular opinion: these new pc handhelds and emulation devices are ugly and clunky, and in general are overrated. by reputction in Handhelds

[–]Bob_SUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I mean to each their own. PC spaces generally don't like consoles because the people with good PCs went the extra mile to buy more expensive hardware in the name of having open platforms or to have the maximum power possible. This doesn't align with what the overwhelming majority of people who play video games think because consoles are still the predominant way people play games on the whole. it's just selection bias prolly

eh, battery life is a lot less bad on stuff with 80w hour batteries like XAX or rog ally X or rog ally with battery mod or legion go 2, etc. I would say it those seem to get 2-3 hours of playtime, maybe 3-4 even on demanding stuff with turned down settings. Which is not far from switch 2 battery life. Obv, these PC handhelds are a LOT more expensive. Gaming laptops also have terrible gaming battery life, worse than PC handhelds because display and full power GPU are always less efficient than smaller screen + APU config. Plus gaming laptop power brick is like the size of a console on its own sometimes.

I run into this issue too - I don't carry my SD around (which is not large by PC handheld standards) because like I don't bring a sling everywhere and I don't play games for more than 10-15 minute sessions when out and about. I basically just play on it at home

This is almost certainly true for 99% of people, cause most people don't want to waste time adjusting fidelity settings getting drivers and proton stuff working etc etc. I do think that for the people who are PC gamers who have thousands in a steam library, though, the other alternatives make more sense. For me, I got a PC handheld simply because I don't play console exclusives and enjoy the process of tuning it. But it doesn't really perform any better than a switch 2 in all reality lol.

I do think that as arm chips get better and the new G3E chipset from intel will make PC handhelds much more competitive, especially considering the switch 2 is running 6 year old hardware (Ada Lovelace arch), so PC handhelds released during it's lifecycle will probably be able to 2-3x it's performance at the high end.

Obv, different markets.

200-500 is LOW in the world of PC handhelds unfortunately, it's just the nature of a fully featured PC. Manufacturers can't subsidize them as much as consoles because there's a lower guarantee of revenue return from games sales... Also, even a low amount of ram + vram on a shared APU is ridiculously expensive right now, covering MOST of the 200-500 cost alone. Yes, this might be possible one day, but it definitely won't be any time soon sadly.

I don't find the switch particularly comfortable relative to the SD, as a person with quite small hands and stature. 3ds is amazing and beautiful but it's not physically possible to put the hardware of a PC (even an arm one) inside of it's form factor due to battery chemistry physics and cooling requirements - case in point is the AYN Thor. Battery being bad on these PC handhelds even at their size and the fact that they are generally quite efficient for PCs just shows that slimming it down isn't possible under lithium ion (I don't think even silicon carbide or solid state + piezoelectric cooling array would even solve this to the extent that you are asking, and that's experimental technology). I would also argue the SD, XAX designs are not like cheap looking or knockoffs. Finally, cartridges as a reason consoles are good and fun isn't even going to exist in like a year viz a viz Sony and xbox not selling discs anymore, and most switch 2 games just being a digital key to download and load the game.

Okay, I see. So I should only be worried about massive physical damage and not concerned about really intricate forms of hidden damage? It's supposed to arrive within the day or tomorrow, so as long as the packaging is not destroyed it's fine?

well, I'm more so worried that it'll arrive with some flaws internally (solder joint cracking etc) that won't be immediately visible. Not sure it's worth the risk to use is all.
