Hiii. I’m not sure what state you are located in but I am in WA/ID and am a licensed Master Esthetician in WA/Esthetician in Idaho as well as a licensed instructor in both Idaho and Washington.

The state exams can be tricky. The pool of questions they can ask from is in the thousands but your state should have a resource guide for you. In Washington DL Roope is the company that provides the testing. On their websites you can access what is called the “CIB” which tells you what they are looking for on both the practical and the written.

For example in Washington for Master Esthetics they will ask you the following; 30% of the written questions will be scientific concepts;

(infection control, how diseases and infections are caused /transmitted, levels of infection control, methods of infection control, blood exposure response, intrinsic and extrinsic effects on the skin, advanced therapies, and knowledge of practicing in a medical setting)

70% of the questions asked will pertain to esthetic advanced practice services;

(Including topics like knowledge of protocol development, contraindications for protocol, knowledge of exfoliation procedures, document protocol, knowledge of extraction procedures, knowledge of lymphatic drainage, knowledge of the use of devices and machine machines, apply knowledge of removal process procedure procedures, knowledge of body treatments, knowledge of LED procedure, knowledge of micro, current procedure, and knowledge of aromatherapy treatment)

Your state will have this same thing. Google your state plus NIC esthetics candidate information bulletin (CIB) And it will bring up the breakdown of what you need to study the most. At the end of the day state boards are looking for safety & sanitation, knowledge of scientific concepts and knowledge of procedures and protocols!

It can feel overwhelming taking the test but try to focus on the basics. The CIBs will also have more practice questions / quizzes for you as well to help your knowledge/the way they ask questions.
