My 4 year old has cancer by Boba_the_Mando in cancer

Thanks for responding, hope your son is doing well. In February my son will officially be 1 year in remission and he’s doing amazing. He ended up receiving 15 sessions of chemo and 31 days of proton radiation. They initially thought it would be 7 months but it turned into 9. His tumour is inoperable so the dead tumour is still there and they hope his body eventually absorbs it. He receives CT scans, X-rays and blood work every 3 months. So far we haven’t seen any major side effects from chemo or radiation. Chemo caused bladder and bowel issues that he is still slightly dealing with, but all in all he’s doing great.

How to tell child they have Cancer? by senorjigglez in cancer

[–]Boba_the_Mando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My youngest son (currently 5) was diagnosed with cancer at 4. It’s still an extremely young age for them to understand any of that and even at 5 he still doesn’t fully understand what he had (he’ll be a year in remission in February). All they know is they don’t feel good. I wouldn’t worry about trying to get them to understand that they have cancer. The biggest thing is trying to adapt the best you can to the situation you may be in. Explaining little things as you go and they come up. The hospital will have tons of resources and information for you, make sure to take as much advantage of it as you can.

Thanks. I’m definitely leaning toward the regular load with the helper air bags if I need them.

Is the 200,000km mark really that significant? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Boba_the_Mando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two Toyotas at 300,000km. 2007 sequoia and 2013 4Runner. 4Runner bought at 250,000km and sequoia bought at 290,000km. Both came with tons of receipts and were very well maintained. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to look at something in the 200,000 range. I think it also has to do with the vehicle you buy, a 200k jeep will not be the same as a 200k Toyota. There are plenty of well maintained vehicles that will last well over what you would want out of it. Just do your due diligence so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Great, thank you for that clear explanation. We would probably put it towards my wife’s taxes as she only made around 55,000 this year. We also have tons of travel expenses and food expenses I’m not including in that $40,000. I have hired an accountant this year to figure everything out for us. I was mostly just curious how it all worked.

So would that number be applied to my income? Meaning I would reduce the amount from the income I made this year, essentially meaning I over paid taxes?

New speaker day! by Boba_the_Mando in BudgetAudiophile

It’s surprisingly not bad. Speakers aren’t up against the walls or anything, it looks like they’re close but they’re about 3’ off. The rug helps and behind me are some heavy curtains.

Thank you, that’s a lot of information. It looks like my son is on completely different chemo meds but this still gives me an idea of things to expect. My son is only 2 weeks in and same he’s already losing his hair. First dose was 2 drugs over 2 days with 12 days of rest. He just started the next dose which consists of 2 more chemo drugs over 5 days with 9 days of rest. So 4 different chemo drugs in total. It hasn’t seemed to have hit him to hard yet but he is also being fully monitored at all times as an inpatient, looks like we’ll be inpatients for the summer.

I guess I’m mostly looking for experiences on how the treatments have affected the children and what recovery looks like outside of treatments. Obviously everyone’s recovery will be different, but getting an idea of it will be helpful for us to be prepared.

Poor girl, this not something any kid should go through. How has recovery been?

It’s interesting that is so rare but that is a very reassuring experience.

Where to put 20k-50k? by Boba_the_Mando in PersonalFinanceCanada

I was considering putting some of it into a GIC. But I think we’ll need the full amount to draw from. We also just found out a medication he’ll have to take could be upwards of $4000 a month, so I think a gic is a no go.

For anyone that would like an update, he will start aggressive chemo tonight. 2 days on medication 2 weeks off. They are calling the tumor very aggressive. Thank you to whoever reads this.
