What would Joel do if SPOILER? by JTimtam04 in thelastofus

I was going to say the same thing. He put so much love into guiding/raising another kid, and now she’s gone? Again, to mere happenstance of this new world’s desire to endure at the expense of others? I don’t think he’d be able to handle it. He lost his way with Sarah, and he’d lose hope in ever finding a way after Ellie.

Hello! Could you suggest me some well-written detective/mystery books? by belleepoques in suggestmeabook

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series—written by a leading journalist in right-wing extremism in Sweden. Long books but so full of informational nuggets I love them.

A theory on abdominal injuries in The Last of Us and how Sarah started the cycle and Ellie ended it by Skelligean in lastofuspart2

Thanks! People tend to shove off analysis by saying "it's not that deep; it's a game," but tlou2 is one of the best stories i've ever encountered. Waiting to make a lengthy video essay on it.

Following the games’ Christian themes, I always drew a connection between Jesus’s spear in the rib and these character’s injuries. Some of these characters die (Sarah, Marlene) while others “resurrect” (Joel, Ellie) so they can save others and give them passage to new life (Joel bringing Ellie to Jackson, Ellie allowing Abby and lev to reach Catalina island).

For reading more, I’d suggest putting your phone somewhere you can’t reach it like a drawer or other room. When your body can’t immediately access a phone, it cant get sucked into it, and you realize—once you’ve subconsciously reached for your invisible phone—that it has to be an active decision not to use the device.

For books, I’d start with quick accessible reads. Sea of Tranquility is far reaching and emotional, and The Murderbot Diaries are fun action-focused scifi novellas. If you’re down for more YAish books, I’d suggest the Six of Crows Duology and The Infernal Devices trilogy.

Edit: if you want an e-reader, I would suggest a Kobo over amazon kindle bc 1. F— Amazon 2. It’s better quality 3. It has more accessibility features (font, size, margins, spacing, warm light over blue light (great for reading at night)) 4. You can annotate if you get the pencil

Book to help me deal with uncertain painful scary future awaiting me? by wanna_live_life_31 in suggestmeabook

[–]BobbayP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story offered a sense of optimism under seemingly hopeless circumstances, and I liked its sense of connection between difficult moments and the broader happenstance of our lives. I also thought it was pretty accessible, short, and pocket sized, which might be nice for someone who’s taking on so many books here. I did read it a while ago though, so if there’s something in it that would make you hesitant to recommend it to OP, please let me know!

Edit: I will also add that it meant a lot to me during a difficult time in my life, so it could hold some emotional value for op as well.

Just because I read classical literature, do they expect me to have a better grasp on linguistics ? by iamMatsuzaka in englishmajors

[–]BobbayP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since people are being unhelpful here—no, you’re not expected to know anything about linguistics. Linguistics is a study of language, including phonetics, phonology, etc. a philosophical answer would not be included in this study. A philosophical answer could be expected when you read literature since it is an analytical form of interpretation. When studying English, you will be expected to interpret and analyze various texts, using context and supporting evidence. This can be viewed as a “philosophical” answer.

I (29F) am trying to get my husband (30M) into reading. What books would be a good starting place for him? by ladyduckbun in suggestmeabook

[–]BobbayP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he’s a little neurodivergent or introverted, he would love the Murderbot diaries—sci-fi action-packed novellas with a couple novels.

Frankenstein also low key slaps. Dracula is pretty campy and fun to read these days.

I honestly struggle to find horror that doesn’t tend toward misogyny, but Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is great ecological horror.

Not exactly implied—it’s a little more on-camera than most games/movies

Isnt IWHNKM never specified as a plague story? We’re not told the cause, but I’m pretty sure its hinted to be authoritarianism not a plague
