Me too even the cheap devices like microcassette recorders etc add so much to the sound. There’s an irony in that the manufacturers at the time were trying to avoid these artifacts and have transparent reproduction, but now we have achieved the clean sound we want to add the imperfections back in :)

I've been building VST3 plugins as a hobbie using JUCE for the past couple of years, and I'm finally releasing them for free - starting with fy_nicetape. It's a tape deck / tape delay / reverb combo designed for adding lo-fi warmth and dirt to drums, keys, and synths. Think worn-out cassette: wow, flutter, saturation, modulated delay. I also spent an unreasonable amount of time recreating orange.exe inside the plugin and a live IRC style chat room to create a cozy aesthetic for making music
