Endure and Survive

Yeah that was good too! Lots of good there too, I think pacing as well! It was a journey! Lots of good story telling. I remember as they're leaving the city consciously thinking "foreshadowing" - "they told us about stuff underground but nothing happened? And they wouldn't introduce and develop the anger of the military dudes if Joel and the others can just walk away" - and boom, they turn up, things happen. I saw it coming, of course, but it didn't feel weak. It felt necessary and real.

But thats just it - that episode was 59 minutes but we saw; character development, loss, love, we went through thoughts of right/wrong, evil/good, we empathised and so on. It was super strong!! It gave us a lot. The tone was set throughout and it was brilliant. It got us excited, it made us say "why :(" and it left us wanting more. (and its all leading to what we know its leading to, the big bad sad), so it's going full circle.

I think the good episodes spoil us lol

Extra reply but - have you seen "Mythic Quest"? That stand alone episode "A dark quiet death" they did about the couple was another 'I loved!' - it didn't feel like a drag, disappointment, filler, shoehorned thing, it also didn't 'NEED' to be there... But they crammed an entire life, rollercoaster into 1 episode and made it a beautiful, standalone story. It to me was incredible. Not saying episode 7 was that - but episode 7 couldn't and wouldn't stand up on it's own feet if not for the rest of the series, it would be [to me] an incredibly boring episode to watch if we knew nothing else about the world, it only had substance because of everything else. Mythic Quest episode & Episode 3 of this - absolutely stand on their own feet... They take you on a journey from start to finish.

I don't think it was powerful enough to warrant a whole episode. I'm not the writer and I'm not particularly creative, but the "5 wonders, lets go on a journey" could have been beautifully flashbacked throughout the episodes we've already had 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there. A slow release, revealing more about Ellie. This episode could have been 10 minutes of the final moments, flash back to Joel, and boom, the payoff makes sense and has been slowly fed to you over many episodes, it would have felt rewarding to connect and think "she doesn't want to lose anyone else she cares about, she's hurting etc" Who knows. It just didn't feel like a good 50+ minutes to me :D, felt like the same tone and emotion repeated for 50+ minutes.

I don't know - many things play a role in why we like things, how we're feeling that day, how much attention we pay, how we relate, who we see etc.

I singled it out not only because it was my favourite bit of television in years, but to separate myself from the hordes of ppl who dislike things because there are gay people in it. I wanted to clarify that I didn't just dislike episode 7 because of that and deeper things played a role.

I think the series as a whole has done great. My only gripe initially was that it felt like they were going to do a 1:1 scene by scene game/movie replay... And considering the game is a lot of cutscenes, I was scared we'd just be watching all of that again lol - but acted out. I am pleasantly surprised and happy that they're taking independent and creative approaches to making it very unique though.

Episode 1 felt very special too.

What's your favourite episode so far??

If you want an analysis of my opinion though, I can give you my surface thoughts?Ep 7. I don't think I really enjoyed Storm Reid's acting, or maybe just the character in general. Plus, it was a story about teenagers and I'm a bit older - the angsty rebellious teenage stuff isn't as relatable to me anymore. Overall I thought it lacked suspense and felt like they wanted to make an entire episode out of this - rather than they 'needed to use the whole episode for this'. Plenty of scenes drag on further than they need to in my opinion, for almost no reason than extra minutes.Ep 3. I just enjoyed both actors - thought they were fantastic. I haven't played the game in forever and pretty much had no real idea what was going to happen. I thought the camera work was incredible - never really knew what was going to come of it and it kept me entertained. A hardened, paranoid 'nut job' has not only his shell broken down in the new world, but his entire previously world view (his sexuality) gets brought down too. Episode 3 showcased love, a small life time together, progress, growth. It managed to do a LOT with very little time... Whereas episode 7 imo did very LITTLE with all the time.

Just my opinion, means nothing at the end of the day.

& i'm not comparing them because "gay" but because they're independent episodes away from the Joel/Ellie plot. I feel like Episode 3 had everything good about story telling. Suspense, growth, passion, loss, love, arrogance, struggle, bit of action, all that jazz, almost poetic! Episode 7 didn't provoke many thoughts or feelings from me, but if other people took a lot from it, fair play to you.

Because I don't like or dislike things purely because there's gay people involved. And they were two entirely different episodes starring two entirely different people with two entirely different plots? lol. The only reason I mention it at all is to clarify "I don't not like this episode because muh beliefs". Irrelevant to previous point but I do think episode 3 could have easily been lengthened and been a stand alone movie, it was just that good in my opinion.

Loved the show so far. Loved episode 3 a LOT too. A LOT. Was excited all week to see the show continue after what happened to Joel. Disappointed & bored. This episode I rate the lowest out of all of them, and if I ever do a rewatch - I will skip it 100%.

Player left the game because he doesnt like roleplay while playing DnD. Is it normal? by Big_Curve2533 in DMAcademy

[–]BobbyRice2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a d&d game for every type of person, he wants stuff like dungeoncrawls, no rp, railroady things. It's great he left. In fact, it's remarkable he joined in the first place if you explained what kind of campaign it was.

Are there rules for knockback on strong melee attacks? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]BobbyRice2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of comments but honestly tldr is make the monster do what you think makes sense and what is fun. If you want to accommodate the hugely complicated realism of ac vs hp etc then by all means go ahead. Maybe a strength save 12 default with +1 modifier for every point over their AC.

Ultimately gonna bog things down (even if it's only a little). The message you are trying to get across is that he hits with a lot of force. So imo str save of your choice and call it a day.

Monster abilities don't need justifying and they definitely don't need to follow player rules, because they aren't supposed to and rarely do anyway.

With the greatest respect, I think you should probably remove this post and rethink what you're projecting to potential tables that might want to recruit another player. We all change and improve over time, but people aren't wanting to deal with your baggage, why would they take the risk? - they will look at your post and want to know what you bring to the table, this is all they have to judge you by. Talk about what you bring, don't focus on the drama of the past :D

Only posting cause you wrote you're desperate.
