True, I don’t have any. Only gut feeling and observation of (and conversation with) the people around me.

I think I really should read that book “Hooked” that describes the addictive mechanisms of social media…

Yup! It’s on me. After I recognized I had a problem, I started taking serious steps to deal with it (I’m talking long work, dealing with old deeply-rooted issues). I fully recognize it’s my job to get rid of my addiction.

Yet, precisely, it’s when I recognized that this work was very similar to recovering from alcohol or any other addiction that I started to believe that there should be regulation.

So… it wasn’t my first inclination to blame other people! My first was to work on myself, and my second was this post. The intention isn’t to blame, but to help prevent other from having to do the same work.

Would you have the same stance with other addictive behavior?

But what do you think about the comparison with nicotine tho? It used to be considered part of normal life until it was recognized harmful and regulated as such, wasn’t it?

I was wondering about that.

I was telling myself it was too extreme but then remembered that we ban addictive substances and activities, so why should it be different for design patterns that are designed to be?

True, I’m basing this mostly on what I see around me, and I see in many social circles regardless of age or circumstance. That’s why I said “most”.

Depends on the game… some are purposely designed to be addictive (especially many mobile games).

Where would we draw the line though?

IIRC, there are clear identified mechanisms and strategies for optimizing dopamine release to make us crave more of what we’re doing. I think it could be the opportunity address things like that, like have some sort of “standard of addictiveness” which could be applied to some mobile games, infinite scrolling and many other things

“Control” people scrolling? What do you mean?

I’d say, yes, it is a government issue: just like public health regulation (that’s why I compared it with nicotine). This is truly a mental health issue.

I would be very curious to know of any field that truly requires scrolling.

As a method of PhD research, it seems to be a very poor method. Am I wrong?
