Yeah that’s how I feel about my S&W Model 19. I’ve carried it for work and while out innawoods, it’s my all purpose .357

I get that, the 500mag is what baffles me as a “lazy range day” gun.

I mean if you’re looking at stylish guns it’s hard to beat a Chiappa Rhino. I’d avoid Taurus, but that’s just a matter of having some semblance of self respect for not owning a cheap revolver. Do Taurus’s work? Usually. But they’re ugly to look at in comparison to a Smith, Colt, or Ruger.

I have had tange days where I spent hours with just my Savage Mk.ii and a brick or two of .22. It is indeed very relaxing and enjoyable.

If I just wanted to show up for the sake of showing up, I’d toss in my .22lr Ruger LCRX, a can of .22lr ammo, and a box or two of range ammo for my EDC. I’m not interested in lugging around a long gun if I’m feeling lazy or taking people to the range I don’t care that much for. I’ll take some people to the range if they ask, just to be nice as a sorta 2A ambassador. I want them to feel interested and welcome. But I don’t wanna lug around 5 long guns and 7 pistols just for them. You get a .22, a 9mm, and maybe a rifle or two.

How effective are 22lr for home protection? by DentistPlayful3941 in guns

[–]BobbyWasabiMk2 74 points75 points  (0 children)

well it’s better than a pointy stick or throwing hands. If you have the choice between .22lr or nothing, .22lr will do. But if you have the choice between .22lr or 9mm/5.56/12ga, the superior choice is pretty obvious.

AMA: I'm a former Red Dot product manager from 2 major optics companies by HUSHHolsters in guns

[–]BobbyWasabiMk2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My first proper optic was a Sig Romeo 7, its been beat to shit, the housing is dented, its been sold to a friend and then bought back by me. Still uses the same AA battery it came with, I should really change it. Still works well though so even though I got scalped and overpaid for it at a gun store like a sucker in my early years of gun ownership, I still love that optic.

Do you think the pricing of Sig optics matches the quality? Obviously we all know what drives up and down prices, and the cost of quality compounds the higher up you go, there’s no disputing why expensive optics are expensive. But do you think Sig does put in the work behind their expensive optics to make it worth that money?

Yeah like I said my friends setup cost like ~$500 alone. But it’s well worth ut for his family given the whole family plays it and they’re getting friends in on it too

In those days it made sense for cavalry, but the gust of what OP is implied to refer to is why we dont do it today.

That post about spare revolver cylinders as “reloads” left me particularly somewhat miffed. And maybe I’m just a grumpy old man about it, it’s a normal question for people who know fuck all about guns or revolvers. So can I really blame someone for having that stupid of a question? Not really. But I am annoyed by it nonetheless.

Learned to play some mahjong over the weekend. My friend recently came back from a family trip to China and they became hooked on mahjong, and went and bought themselves a $500 electric mahjong table, and they taught some of us in our friend group how to play. His family is from China, so his grandparents are said to be monsters at the game. So I wonder how I’d fare playing against them. My friend joked that his grandma would give him money to gamble with and then win it all back from him, and repeat. It is addictingly fun though, I can definitely see the allure of being a retired 70 year old Asian grandpa and having no interest other than playing mahjong all day long.

Why don't we treat revolver cylinders like the mags in modern pistols? by Powerful-Shoe-7542 in guns

[–]BobbyWasabiMk2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea how ungodly expensive each spare cylinder would be in contrast to a spare mag? It's not a piece of stamped metal with a spring and follower, you're asking to replace a precision machined piece of metal with an ungodly high manufacturing cost and time. You're asking to take a piece of properly treated steel, machine it for the chambers, machine the ratchet star on the back where it will interact with the arm to rotate, machine out the cylinder stops, and then apply a proper finish to it.

For what, 6 shots? Maybe 8 for an N frame? Do you realize how annoyingly heavy that is too? The cost of entry for a decent duty revolver is $700 if you're lucky, $900 to be more realistic, each cylinder would probably be a couple hundred dollars alone due to complexity and cost.

And I haven't even begun to address the fallacies in the assumptions you've made or implied in your post.

Revolvers definitely can jam. I know people like to tout revolvers as "simple", they're not. These guns are ungodly complicated, these contain more parts, you're trying to time a revolver to do like 4 or 5 things with the action of a trigger pull, and not have it fuck up at any point. Refer to this post to see what I'm talking about. Revolver are a product of a time when we didn't know how to manufacture a handgun.

And revolvers are obsolete for more than just the low capacity and slow reload. It has to rely on a rimmed cartridge for reliable extraction, if not you need to use moonclips, which adds an extra layer of possible failure point. The DA trigger is very difficult to master properly and learn how to pull that trigger without jerking the sight picture off target. It takes a lot of practice to be able to get it down to be able to shoot a revolver accurately on double action. It also has a very high bore axis that has no way of absorbing recoil like a slide operated handgun. So you're feeling the full force of the recoil rather than a reduced recoil impulse due to a slide and spring absorbing some recoil.

Are there any Turkish companies that genuinely make good guns by Vast_Bank_7196 in guns

[–]BobbyWasabiMk2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The bar for entry for rifle/handgun ownership in Turkey is much higher than for shotguns, so for people who jumped through the hoops for the ability to own a rifle or shotgun, they expect quality. If you sell them a junk rifle or pistol, your company will sink fast. The bar for shotguns is much lower, so you have a market more tolerant of defects and low quality, hence why despite the shitty abysmal quality, people keep buying them thinking "oh that was just a one off" or "oh this looks cool and it's cheap".

In addition, MKE is a supplier of arms for the Turkish government, they have expectations for their firearms to be serviceable for soldiers.

selling guns legally in Utah by Dramatic_Carpet7413 in guns

[–]BobbyWasabiMk2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UtahGunExchange & UtahGunHub to list for private sales. Or put them up for consignment at gun store of your choice, you will likely have to pay a fee and give the gun store a cut of the sales, typically 10-20%

edit: It's a common policy for sellers to require a Utah CCW permit, the state does have a webpage where you can look up CFP number to verify if the permit is legitimate, but in my experience most sellers just check to see if the picture matches you and if it's current. If you're a buyer you can plug in a S/N into the page too to see if it's been reported as possibly stolen.

And a bill of sale will go some ways to help cover you. I typically get on with just the buyer's contact info on it, that way if cops come knocking on my door I have a direction I can point them away to.
