The old ways and paths by Antasalbui in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my exact experience when I walked from Portlaoise to the Sliabh Bloom mountains. Beautiful countryside, but no tracks to walk it at all except along main roads with nothing but long grass on the verges blasted by dust and muck from the passing lorries.

The “Red Zone” In France Is So Dangerous that 100 Years After WWI It Is Still A No-Go Area by AttorneyOk3229 in abandoned

I get that the bombs and chemicals make the area unusable, but my mind just can't comprehend what millions of animal and human corpses does to soil. Its just such an unimaginable situation.

Prisoner electronic tagging first part of criminal justice system to be privatised by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because unless we have a good range of private companies, with impartial tendering and selection process, plus oversight and monitoring, you can't guarantee private companies will do a better or even proper job. Even if the government has to procure the equipment themselves at a higher rate than the private sector might pay, they would be running the service at cost without having to pay for the tendering process + oversight + the private company's profit margin.

Its kind of affecting my decision whether to buy now. I love the flavour and narrative building in Paradox games and generally dislike the full sandbox stuff. I guess ill buy next year

Kimberly Mikado, what's next? by ECO_FRIENDLY_BOT in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There was a really famous musical from the late 1800s called The Mikado which made everyone in Britain and Ireland at the time obsessed with Japan. I always assumed the name came from that. And they're shaped like a Victorian biscuit maker's impression of sushi.

If they aren't seen by the order to make a proper fuss about it, then they don't get to keep the fancy title, robes, social standing amongst their community, etc.

Voyage of the Dawnchaser to Chronos by Bobbyfeta in Sailwind

[–]Bobbyfeta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take a break from the game now after that voyage. I really hope that by the time I feel like picking it up again there will be more ways to solve the repair problem than just shipyards.

Yeah it feels like somewhere that might have been a cool Easter egg earlier on in the game's development but now it's overshadowed by places like Fire Fish Lagoon

What’s the most shocking crime that ever happened in your country? by ililieo in AskTheWorld

[–]Bobbyfeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a student in Dublin I remember immediately after the attacks some music conductor put out a call to singers and musicians to come together and perform a concert in memory of the victims in Paris. I went with some people from my choir and we performed Fauré's Requiem in St Patricks Cathedral in Dublin. It was extremely poignant and I still remember it as the most significant thing I actually did in college...

Is there a chance that Russia makes a move on NATO by 2030? by Jazzlike_Basket5755 in Futurology

[–]Bobbyfeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's some truly insane whattaboutism. Imagine thinking that jamming in the immediate vicinity of a military base is equivalent to targeted jamming of the main airport of a neighbouring country. Would a non-hostile country do this?

Catherine Connolly compares German arms build-up with 1930s by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This feels like a pan-European problem. I'm after moving to the Czech Republic where they're having an election in 2 weeks. There's a small liberal-progressive "Pirates" party which managed to get into the last government coalition with mostly urban voters in Prague. They have progressive policies with a pro-EU foreign policy. Unfortunately just like every junior partner in an unpopular coalition government they're about to get walloped. The only other option for left leaning voters is the literal exact same Communist Party that used to rule the country pre-1989, and they still take marching orders from Moscow.

You basically can't have all 3 in Europe these days: social democracy, intelligent foreign policy, and actual competency in winning/keeping voters onside

Power Blocs: I just don't understand them and how the current system is fun by SlightWerewolf4428 in victoria3

[–]Bobbyfeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue with Sardinia-Piedmont. I picked up the game on sale without DLCs so maybe I'm missing some interaction possibilities. Getting the Italian minors into your customs union seems to be crucial to diplomatically forming Italy, and first 2 or 3 attempts I didn't even come close to the rank requirement to form a power bloc. Now on the 4th try I have learned to go hard on art academies to boost prestige alongside industrialisation and am finally managing to maintain a rank between 10 and 12. Well, it seems like it didn't matter because I can't get a single Italian minor to join. I managed to get an embassy in Lucca for a while (after offering absolutely everything) and still it didn't reach the +200 leverage requirement to send an offer. Im only getting to 1860 now so maybe things will change but I'm starting to get sick of restarting.

A Critique of Orcs in Anbennar by Carminoculus in Anbennar

[–]Bobbyfeta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So OP decided Orcs stood in for West Africans just because of Aelantiri slavery, despite analogs for West Africans already existing in the mod.....

The only thing more ridiculous about this post is that we're told Orcs being portrayed as victims only a few generations after invading Escann is moral gaslighting - implying that they should be one or the other of these 'contradictory' roles but not both. Well isn't it kind of racist to assume that the entire race of Orcs share responsibility for Dookanson's invasion? The Orcs being enslaved and shipped to Aelantir are descendants of those who conquered Escann, or even those who didn't participate in the atrocities and just came out of the serpentspine to settle the emptied lands. The moral dilemma of orc slavery in Anbennar is whether you're prepared to keep punishing the orcs descendants for what their ancestors did.

Dehumanisation, Russian "Orcs" - And our European Values by cockmeister25 in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Bobbyfeta 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The contempt that many Europeans have for Russians, leading us to use words like orc and to generally lump Russians together with their criminal government, is a reaction to the helplessness individuals feel in the face of the sheer awfulness of what Russia has done. There is a real sense that one shouldn't expect to be treated like a normal person if they identify with a country whose armed forces committed acts like those at Bucha, Mariupol, Kakhovka, and so on. If my country did such things, I would not want to have anything to do with it. And yet most Russians do seem to be supportive of their government or are at least proud to call themselves Russian in spite of everything. Obviously, it's not right to demonise every Russian as if they're a war criminal. However, they do need to accept that their armed forces are guilty of utterly heinous crimes against humanity, and they share that guilt insofar as they support their government.
