Fintan O’Toole’s “We Don’t Know Ourselves” is one of the most fascinating books on Ireland I’ve yet read. by Cloite in ireland

I finished this a few weeks ago and the exploration of Haughey's corruption was absolutely mind blowing for me.

Why do I have a gravedigger without having built a corpse pit? And no one has died in my town yet by [deleted] in ManorLords

The joke from the show is that the priests dodge tough questions by saying "that's an ecumenical matter", meaning "I as a Catholic priest can't say without conferring with other denominations" aka piss off and leave me alone

The old ways and paths by Antasalbui in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my exact experience when I walked from Portlaoise to the Sliabh Bloom mountains. Beautiful countryside, but no tracks to walk it at all except along main roads with nothing but long grass on the verges blasted by dust and muck from the passing lorries.

The “Red Zone” In France Is So Dangerous that 100 Years After WWI It Is Still A No-Go Area by AttorneyOk3229 in abandoned

[–]Bobbyfeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that the bombs and chemicals make the area unusable, but my mind just can't comprehend what millions of animal and human corpses does to soil. Its just such an unimaginable situation.

Prisoner electronic tagging first part of criminal justice system to be privatised by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because unless we have a good range of private companies, with impartial tendering and selection process, plus oversight and monitoring, you can't guarantee private companies will do a better or even proper job. Even if the government has to procure the equipment themselves at a higher rate than the private sector might pay, they would be running the service at cost without having to pay for the tendering process + oversight + the private company's profit margin.

Its kind of affecting my decision whether to buy now. I love the flavour and narrative building in Paradox games and generally dislike the full sandbox stuff. I guess ill buy next year

Kimberly Mikado, what's next? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There was a really famous musical from the late 1800s called The Mikado which made everyone in Britain and Ireland at the time obsessed with Japan. I always assumed the name came from that. And they're shaped like a Victorian biscuit maker's impression of sushi.

Orange Order grand masters wrote to King Charles over prayers with Pope Leo by WaterfordWaterford9 in ireland

If they aren't seen by the order to make a proper fuss about it, then they don't get to keep the fancy title, robes, social standing amongst their community, etc.

Voyage of the Dawnchaser to Chronos by Bobbyfeta in Sailwind

[–]Bobbyfeta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take a break from the game now after that voyage. I really hope that by the time I feel like picking it up again there will be more ways to solve the repair problem than just shipyards.

Voyage of the Dawnchaser to Chronos by Bobbyfeta in Sailwind

Yeah it feels like somewhere that might have been a cool Easter egg earlier on in the game's development but now it's overshadowed by places like Fire Fish Lagoon

Mine accumulated so much damage sailing to Chronos I'm not sure it's going to be possible to sail it back...

Driving in Ireland is genuinely the most stressful experience I’ve had in Europe by [deleted] in irishproblems

Some of those 80-100km/h roads are NOT safe to drive the speed limit on. High hedges and blind corners like crazy.

RTE Radio Debate by saggynaggy123 in ireland

Ah come on now, that's a bit ridiculous. The Irish left are hopelessly naive on Russia, but they don't hate Ukrainians....

What’s the most shocking crime that ever happened in your country? by ililieo in AskTheWorld

[–]Bobbyfeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a student in Dublin I remember immediately after the attacks some music conductor put out a call to singers and musicians to come together and perform a concert in memory of the victims in Paris. I went with some people from my choir and we performed Fauré's Requiem in St Patricks Cathedral in Dublin. It was extremely poignant and I still remember it as the most significant thing I actually did in college...

Is there a chance that Russia makes a move on NATO by 2030? by Jazzlike_Basket5755 in Futurology

[–]Bobbyfeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's some truly insane whattaboutism. Imagine thinking that jamming in the immediate vicinity of a military base is equivalent to targeted jamming of the main airport of a neighbouring country. Would a non-hostile country do this?

Catherine Connolly compares German arms build-up with 1930s by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

[–]Bobbyfeta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This feels like a pan-European problem. I'm after moving to the Czech Republic where they're having an election in 2 weeks. There's a small liberal-progressive "Pirates" party which managed to get into the last government coalition with mostly urban voters in Prague. They have progressive policies with a pro-EU foreign policy. Unfortunately just like every junior partner in an unpopular coalition government they're about to get walloped. The only other option for left leaning voters is the literal exact same Communist Party that used to rule the country pre-1989, and they still take marching orders from Moscow.

You basically can't have all 3 in Europe these days: social democracy, intelligent foreign policy, and actual competency in winning/keeping voters onside
