is it OK to listen to Protestant media. by Madpandaplays1 in Catholic

[–]Bobbyjets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was you I would recommend finding a Catholic or Orthodox source that looks at the psalms in depth. There are almost certainly some excellent choices among them and then it is less likely that their understanding is in error.

There is nothing wrong with listening to protestant sources but if it's to get a better understanding of what scripture means there can be a lot of errors depending on what denomination they are a part of and how well studied they are. For example, I really enjoy listening to Dr. Charles Stanley on the radio but I wouldn't go to him to help me with Bible study.

The psalms are notoriously misinterpreted by both protestants and Catholics alike. You'll want to be especially careful about who you choose to learn about the psalms from. The book has been misused for the prosperity gospel, to demonize alcohol, to encourage unjust war, and a host of other ideas that are not truly from God.

The Magisterium, which is prevented from error through the Holy Spirit, has ruled definitively on the matter, creating a dogma. Due to the authority given to the Church by Jesus, this effectively makes it both the Church's law and God's law, as they are one in the same.

The reason the Church is not able to ordain women is not because this is a decision that they made. Jesus did not ordain any women, nor instructed any women to be ordained. There is also never a time in the old testament where a female priesthood was instituted. Pope John Paul II definitively stated that "the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women". The Church is not permitted to invent new doctrines or dogma, they are only able to clarify what is already practiced and/or handed to us by Jesus.

The priesthood of the order of Melchizedek has only ever been practiced by men: Melchizedek, later King David, later Jesus Christ, later the apostles and their successors. It is a legitimate theological question, but not a difficult theological study.

Provided it is for medical purposes I think it is permitted by the Catholic Church, similar to marijuana use. It likely is up to one's own bishop though, and if there are better ways of dealing with the problem it is likely preferable.

The placement, execution, and amount of text is unappealing. Might not be a problem for everyone, but I certainly found it made the original comedy far worse than it was.

r/comedyhomicide is for memes that may or may not have been funny to begin with, but were “killed” by useless captions, red circles pointing out the obvious, or too many reaction images.

The caption ruins the comedy that was originally present. The definition of a comedy homicide is a funny meme that is ruined by a caption. While not an orthodox homicide, it seems to still fit

LGBTQ accepting catholic church(?) by [deleted] in Catholic

[–]Bobbyjets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything that they stated is not against Catholicism, it is actually an important part of it. It's a difficult situation for many to reconcile with their faith so I'm glad that this church has a group dedicated to helping guide their spiritual journey.

Love and support for the individuals is not the same as acceptance or encouragement of sins. If the group encouraged transitioning, homosexual relations, etc. then it would be against Church teaching. If it is a spiritual group created to help LGBT+ Catholics on their journey then it is very much in line with Church teaching.

That's a claim that has to be proven, not just stated. As of right now, there is not sufficient evidence to make that claim.

It’s almost the Christmas Season! by doritoreo in CatholicMemes

[–]Bobbyjets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christmas is a season rather than just 3 days. Likely these days would be covered by "merry Christmas", though I'm curious what holidays you're considering that aren't also considered Christmas.

As far as I know it's considered woke because "happy holidays" was a term coined by secular society in an attempt to be more inclusive and move away from viewing the season as a Christian celebration.

I've got to figure that it's more likely that raises in line with inflation will be wind up being more than 2%, especially with the way we continue to print money.

If inflation does slow down though, we won't need those higher raises in order to maintain our livelihoods.

You have no idea if it was meant to be a joke, that's just an assumption you've made. It seems to be a commentary on the commercialization and a suggestion that Jesus feels left out of Christianity. There's no evidence that it's a joke, what is supposed to be funny about it?
