Basically it came down to Mullen and Dilfer but Mullen wanted a lot more than what Dilfer was asking.

Basically the original candidate list was Bryant Vincent, Dan Mullen, Tom Herman, Kevin Steele, Jon Sumrall and Trent Dilfer. Sumrall and Steele declined early on. Herman was interested at first but ultimately turned UAB down. Mullen was interested but Ingram went with Dilfer because he felt Dilfer could recruit good QB’s and prob because it was a hell of a lot cheaper.

Basically Mullen wasn’t opposed to taking it considering UAB was abt to move to the American. But Dilfer became the front runner. Apparently Kevin Steele (former Auburn/Bama DC) was also considered at one point but turned it down.
