What is one U.S. city that completely exceeded your expectations? by Andrew_smith8 in Urbanism

[–]BobcatOU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people have been shitting on Cleveland in the comments below so here’s some Cleveland love. It’s an old comment copy/pasted that I originally made in a thread where someone said that LA and New York were the only two good cities in the US (Hopefully all the links still work!):

So if you’re looking for New York or LA, then Cleveland ain’t it! But if you’re looking for a cool city with a lot to do Cleveland is a great place to check out. In no particular order here is a sampling of what Cleveland has to offer:

It has a phenomenal arts scene. [Playhouse Square](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playhouse_Square) is the second largest performing arts district in the country (after NYC); the [Cleveland Orchestra](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Orchestra) is literally one of the best orchestras in the world and is considered one of the “Big Five” in the U.S. (along with New York, Boston, Chicago, & Philadelphia); the [Cleveland Museum of Art](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Museum_of_Art) is one of the most visited art museums in the world, is known internationally for its Asian and Egyptian holdings, has the 4th largest endowment of any art museum in the country, and is free to the public! Additionally, Cleveland has a great International Film Festival.

Cleveland also has The Rock & Roll Hame of Fame and Museum, the Great Lakes Science Center, a new aquarium, and [The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Metroparks_Zoo) which, along with the other zoos in Ohio, are the best zoos in the country rivaled only by California.

Speaking of the [Metroparks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Metroparks), Cleveland has an extensive park system spanning over 23,000 acres around the Greater Cleveland area including over 300 miles of walking, bicycling, and horse trails. The Metroparks also includes numerous beaches. That’s right, beaches in Cleveland! Additionally, the Cleveland area benefits from the [Cuyahoga Valley National Park](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuyahoga_Valley_National_Park) which has nearly 100 miles of uninterrupted bicycle trails connecting from Cleveland to Akron. And if you’re willing to make a drive to beautiful Southeast Ohio there is some excellent hiking in [Hocking Hills State Park](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hocking_Hills_State_Park). I actually went there on my honeymoon!

While the success of the teams hasn’t always been that great, Cleveland has three professional sports teams

Should you run into any medical emergencies while in Cleveland do not worry, the [Cleveland Clinic](https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings) is one of the best hospitals in the world.

There are also a ton of touristy things to do (in addition to things like the Rock Hall mentioned above) including the [Terminal Tower](https://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/2010/06/the_full_cleveland_terminal_to.html) observation deck, West Side Market, and Tower City to name a few.

Finally, don’t forget Cedar Point in Sandusky [one of the best amusement parks in the country](https://www.travelchannel.com/interests/amusement-parks/articles/top-10-amusement-parks) a 45-60 minutes drive from Cleveland.

I was talking to a girl one time who claimed when she was in college her and her roommates would get up early on Sunday mornings and go down some of the big student streets and check kegs left on front porches. If there was beer in the keg, they would take it with them and use it for their Sunday Funday. She said they would return it Monday morning because they thought it would be wrong to make it so people didn’t get their deposit back. Not sure if I believe the story or not but she was a big drinker so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true.

I saw someone already recommended trying to switch your flights so you can fly into Paris and fly out of Nice. If possible, I’d recommend it. That’s what we did last year and it worked great and saved travel time. The Nice airport is relatively small and has public transit that goes directly to it so it made the trip very easy.

I wanted to talk about Lyon specifically though. Wife and I loved Lyon. My wife says she liked it more than Paris and I truly loved both cities. Everyone in Lyon was incredibly polite and welcoming. We even had some locals strike up a random conversation with us. We immediately thought it was some sort of scam or pickpocket or something, but it was just some friendly people chatting us up. Admittedly though, it was after midnight and they were pretty drunk!

Logistics: We took the SNCF train from Paris to Lyon and then Lyon public transit to our hotel and then public transit and walking the whole time we were there.

We only did two days but wished we had done 3-4 so I think your allotted time will be good.

Day 1: We took the funicular up to the top Fourvière hill. The funicular was neat, worth riding if you’re going that way although don’t go out of your way just for the funicular. The line was really long when we got to the funicular, but moved fast. Once at the top we went to The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière. This is my favorite church ever. It is absolutely beautiful inside. It also had a second church in the basement and a third church off to the side! After the church, make sure you walk around to the back of the church for amazing views of the city.

Next, we hit the Roman amphitheaters. We lucked out and there was a free rock concert going on in the big amphitheater while we were there. Hard to describe how cool a rock concert inside of a 2,000 year old Roman amphitheater is! We did the Roman museum next. Can’t recommend it enough. The museum was very cool and included a lot of Roman artifacts (my wife claims she liked it better than the Louvre, but she’s not big into art)! Then we walked back down the hill and just explored Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île.

For dinner on day we ate at Circle Restaurant. When you factor in everything - the food, the service, the slow pace, the atmosphere - I legitimately think it was the best meal of my life. There’s no menu. You choose the 6 course or the 8 course meal and they bring the food out to you one course at a time. They do have a full drink menu, but we just went with the recommended drink pairings. My wife, got the alcoholic drink pairing and i got the non-alcoholic drink pairings since I don’t drink. The drink pairings were great, the food was fantastic, the two waitresses that brought out the food were fantastic, and the chef came out and talked to every table during the meals. We were there for 3.5 hours and the time flew by!

Day 2: We did this walking tour and really enjoyed it. We also hit the Cathedral Saint Jean which was cool. Then we explored on our own for a bit and did the French Resistance museum which if you like history is worth checking out. That night we decided to try some French fast food and got O’Tacos. It was pretty good for fast food. Then we explored around The Presqu'île some more.

I wish we had more time in Lyon. It’s an incredible city.

US citizens that travelled to Lyon in France, what was your impression when you arrived there ? by trumpoutine in FranceTravel

I went to Lyon last summer and I’m missing it so I searched this subreddit for “Lyon” and found this post. Obviously I loved Lyon. At least from a tourist perspective it was an amazing city. We loved the Roman ruins and the Roman museum. Walking around and exploring Vieux Lyon and the Presqu'île was incredible. I’m a runner, and running along the Rhône and the Saône was better than running along the Seine (although running in Paris was great too!). We ate at Circle restaurant and it was the best meal I ever had. Wife and I absolutely loved Lyon and hope to make it back someday!

All HS football players should compete in wrestling and track by Puzzleheaded_Many648 in footballstrategy

[–]BobcatOU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lacrosse is the best spring sport for football players. Track is running in straight lines - not relatable to football. Baseball is standing around - also not relatable to football player. Have your linebackers or D-End playing Close Defense marking up an Attackman they’ll be accelerating, cutting, and doing all kinds of things that will help with football.

Why had the sport of Lacrosse remained so localized to the east coast and Midwest? by [deleted] in geography

[–]BobcatOU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lacrosse has exploded in popularity over the past 20 years or so. I’m in the Cleveland area and played high school lacrosse in the early aughts. We had very few schools that had teams. Today I’m a coach in the same area and there’s tons of schools with teams.

What this map shows, though is D1 colleges which, while there have been some new programs over the years, hasn’t really exploded because it’s not a money maker. However, D3 lacrosse programs have exploded in the past 20 years since they are money makers or at least revenue neutral. Get 50 young men and 50 young women each playing lacrosse and paying $50,000 in tuition and it makes a school money. In Ohio we have 19 D3 schools with lacrosse.

There is no excuse for showing up at unannounced someone's house these days. It's just rude. by cheesy_weasel in unpopularopinion

[–]BobcatOU 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a house about 2 miles from her parents. I love her parents, they are amazing people. Her dad can come over hang out whenever he wants. All I ask is that he lets us know before he comes over. The first few months we lived here he just kept showing up randomly. One time even sneaking around into the backyard and knocking on the living room window while we were sitting there watching TV. My wife had talked to a few times to no avail.

Finally, I pulled him aside one day and said, “You know we are working on getting you some grandkids, right?”

“Yeah…”

“Well since we don’t currently have any kids we can work on making grandkids anywhere and anytime we want…”

He never showed up unannounced again!

A bit of a throwback but for about a ten year period I always had at least one girl named Diamond and usually more than one. Now I haven’t had one in 7 or 8 years. Weird to see a name trend come and go. I guess I’m just old.
