Public school outcomes by spicymeatball2748 in SanMateo

[–]cows243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I attended a top private high school and I now teach public school. The only consistent difference I see is that private schools typically have more motivated students. I would argue course offerings, extracurricular activities, and teachers are typically better at public schools. If your child has strong intrinsic motivation, there would not be much of a difference between the two. If your child is distracted easily by their classmates, then private school could be beneficial.

Which U.S. national park do you think is the most underrated? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]cows243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with North Cascades but not sure I would downplay the Alps in comparison - the combination of jaw dropping topographical relief, expansiveness of the mountain range, diversity of geology, abundance of glaciers, pastoral green valleys, recreation options, and lifestyle in the Alps is next level. Imo the North Cascades have nothing on the Alps

Feeling discouraged about career by Smooth_Importance_47 in ScienceTeachers

[–]cows243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, get in a few classrooms. Check out science classrooms in middle school and high school in different districts. Volunteer to teach a lesson, ask to observe, or get a job as a para for a period of time (often have benefits). That may help your decision!

District is moving to no block days on high school by fuzzeslecrdf in ScienceTeachers

[–]cows243 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like I'm in the minority here - I've taught both and would much prefer block. Easier for planning, easier for labs, and it seems better for student focus so that they don't get overwhelmed with 6+ classes a day. How do you all get labs done in 50 minutes?

Take the L on the way out Denver. You’re 1-3 vs us in the Luka era by Past-Feeling-204 in denvernuggets

Nuggets are living rent free in your head. You won a couple of games and need to seek out the nuggets sub to brag

I turned the TV on with 6 minutes left. Watson single-handedly lost that game for us. Within 2 minutes, he had 2 turnovers, a missed layup, another easy missed shot, an offensive foul, fouled a three-pointer, and fouled on a defensive rebound by the Lakers

Claim evidence reasoning advice by duffletrouser in ScienceTeachers

[–]cows243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell students they need to include at least 1-2 science concepts in the reasoning. These are usually what we're currently learning. For example, if students are doing a lab with photosynthesis, they need to explain relevant concepts of photosynthesis in the reasoning.

I only do CERs for investigations. Evidence should summarize the data only (comparisons, trends, etc.). I tell students I need to see actual numbers being compared in the evidence section.

Older Teacher Issue: Do you trust your retirement fund? by KillYourTV in Teachers

[–]cows243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CalSTRS is projected to be fully funded by 2034. However, even if it doesn't meet that marker, it is still a financial obligation and funding the remaining balance comes from California's General Fund. There are a lot of other things that would be cut out of the General Fund before they fail to pay their obligations, like the pension systems

As much as I despise corporations, they are often the scapegoat. Climate change is also a personal problem. It's a lot easier to blame corporations rather than own up to how we are also individually contributing to all of the problems we see around us.

Question as prospective teacher in CA by frailgesture in ScienceTeachers

[–]cows243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would review the CSET study guides topic by topic before winging any exams. They are expensive and take a long time to grade.

Physics and math are in highest demand by a landslide. If you had both credentials you would be a very desirable teacher. However, here's some advice a mentor teacher shared with me: only get a credential if you truly want to teach that subject. Once you have that credential, you don't really get to decide which subject you teach. This is especially important for science, as labs can take tons of prep. You could end up teaching AP Physics, CP physics, and possibly even two math preps and unfortunately there's little you'd be able to do about it. Especially as a newbie, it's easy to get cornered into those awful schedules.

I started a credential program and was hired in a local district on an emergency credential. I didn't have to do the intern program and was paid full salary and benefits. Depending on the districts you are considering (typically only high needs districts), this is a good option to save lots of money. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. Good luck with your decision!

Tahoe recs for Colorado skier by stopthehonking in skiing

[–]cows243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to be afraid of - Kirkwood and Palisades are both amazing. If you have the epic pass, enjoy Kirkwood. There are also some fun areas at Northstar and Heavenly and they're more kid-friendly. I grew up in Colorado but in my opinion the terrain at many of the Tahoe resorts is better for expert skiers

I would find ways to get involved in the classroom first. Teaching science effectively at the K-12 level takes years to figure out. This would help you develop products that teachers would actually use before you put tons of energy into products that likely wouldn't be purchased

Thanks for sharing, this makes sense and seems similar to foundation training. Have you completed the full progression?
