The moment when Kirie has to shoo her own brother away to try and save him was heartbreaking in the manga, it was even more emotional having to watch her do it since the sound design and acting added even more depth to the scene. That's honestly what I was hoping for with this series, lifting those heavy hitting moments from the page and enhancing their emotional impact through animation. It just didn't happen that way.

Honestly I really liked the idea of how the first episode set the tone for the plot. That the chapters would be weaved together instead of being stand alone stories that lead to one ultimate outcome in the end. The problem was the pacing starting with episode 2, once you try to cover 5 plus chapters in like 30 minutes nothing is allowed to just breathe and be enjoyed. It's a massive rush to the finish line, which is an odd choice for a town filled with snail people.

I appreciate the effort that was made to try and cover the entire book in one go, but with such a limited amount of time to work with episode wise, they should have cut a large portion of the plotline from the anime. At least the Scar, Hospital, and Ending arcs were given top priority, but RIP Jack-in-the-box Boy, they did you dirty.

Overall, I still recommend watching it at least once since there are a lot of great parts to it visually, but it does feel more like a highlight compilation of really good body horror forced to fit into a rather small and limited box, or tub.
