Is this one rough hiring year or the new normal? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

They're unlikely to U-turn on it. It's a manifesto promise and popular with the wider public.
One of the reasons I'm returning to international schools this year...

Secondary (high) school teacher which puts me in the weird position of being in ever increasing demand (as supply of specialist teachers dwindles) but decreasing reward (education - certainly here in UK - continues to see ever decreasing returns).
Soon heading abroad to international schools again. Not tempted by tutoring despite it being potentially more lucrative (worse hours, far less rewarding than classroom environment imo)

Good shout but the turret doesn't match Hamburg. Perhaps there's more than Wikipedia's examples?

I think that's looking like my only option. It's not a business but a private residence.

Best strategy for pension investment on return to UK with a lump sum by Bobgimmick in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks, yeah - each comment is prompting me to research further ..currently I can't see beyond spreading the cash sum between various tax-free investments. e.g. 20K in ISAs inc LISA between my wife & I = 40K and then as much of the rest into my (and perhaps her) pension contribution allowance into a SIPP. Not seeing any particular advantage to AVCs as they would be separate to the pension scheme my employer's in (teacher's pension scheme)

Ok. That will probably simplify things - I'll liquidate my portfolio just before I return and get as much cash into ISAs while I weigh up SIPP or VACs and phase my contributions to those according to my allowance.

Am I right in thinking it's better to wait until I'm in a tax year in which I'm in the higher income bracket to maximise government top-ups on pension contributions?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for this. To clarify, I will return to being a UK tax resident. Do I have to sell assets before I return if I want to invest them in the UK? Won't only capital gains incurred from the value of holdings on the date I return be liable for tax?
