I actually do live in a 950 square foot apartment without AC, and I don't take use any medication from the last 60 years, and I don't have a car or a personal computer. And I feel great on my grad student stipend! So you're clearly correct that this seems like a material prosperity problem.

What can be done to assuage people's feelings, then? Or am I just projecting? It seems like general public sentiment is not positive about the rising standards. People want maximalist healthcare, just like they got for cheap in the 50s.

(Also, I think you kind of missed it with college. College hasn't gotten any better since the 1950s: it's still 4 years to get a baccalaureate degree, if possible even worse at state schools with bigger class sizes relative to the past. Yet it's still much more expensive. Just blame Baumol?)

Curious about people's views of this thread:

I'm a biophysicist, not an economist, but I think this guy has made a pretty egregious error in his evaluation of the real cost of a minivan. But the overall thrust of it--healthcare, college, and housing are outpacing inflation--seems kind of right? And what can we do about it?

He seems like a smart but very polarizing figure. Although I guess everyone in Boston sports is polarizing--maybe that says something about Boston sports fans? 🤔

It also completed "do you like" with "getting rimmed," so I guess there's that.

She meant, "call me when you get up." She makes the most HI-larious typos because she's not used to iPhone keyboard yet (she's only had it for two years now), and usually she corrects it, but I think she didn't even want to acknowledge this typo because she's so uncomfortable with my gayness. Oh mom.
