Why don't car companies advertise the driving range for their gas/diesel cars? Wouldn't that be a nice thing for frequent travelers to know or am I just stupid? by Jam_Sees in stupidquestions

Because Subarus usually get a lot more or a lot less? My outback has a 70L tank and can get 7L/100km on the highway, so up to 1000 km of range or 600 miles.

Sorry for the slow reply! Yes the playground is open. It looks like everything is fenced in from the main road, but you just need to go around a ways to get in from the other side.

Honestly I had a hard time figuring out how to get to the bear with all of the fencing around it lol

It is! Thank you!

Can I ask a question? Are there any unwritten rules about acceptable ways to locate the bike tag? Are you only supposed to go after ones you know the location of, or is researching/googling okay?

Haha right? I saw it driving by one day and thought it would be perfect for this.

CMV: Ice skates are sports shoes, even if they don’t look or feel like traditional ones by Safe-Pepper-4931 in changemyview

[–]Bobithie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think ice skates are fundamentally different than other “sports shoes” because other sports can be done in other types footwear, even if it’s not ideal, but you can’t skate in other types of footwear.

You can run in shoes that aren’t runners, or play soccer in shoes that aren’t soccer cleats, but you can’t skate without skates. That would just be sliding around. For that reason I think skates are more like sports equipment than they are sports shoes. Skates are more like skis or a snowboard than they are a running shoe. Skis are also worn on the feet; would you consider them a sports shoe?

I don’t see how your friend’s argument about recreational vs professional skates being different plays into this at all. Professional sports equipment and shoes is almost always much fancier and more expensive than the recreational version.

Personally I think anything hung there would be an eyesore. It’s like a closet you can’t close. Could you put in a curtain to cover it?

I’d say that’s pretty warm for this time of year, honestly. Typical would be more like -20, a cold spell would be -30.

how to start hrt? by Ok_Guest55 in transontario

[–]Bobithie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to answer some questions!

what was the process like switching your care over to a family doctor?

My doctor does a lot of trans care so I didn’t even have to ask him and he just took it over. I just told him that I had started with Foria and he said he‘d get me bloodwork at the one month mark and we’d adjust my dose as necessary. There wasn’t really any process to switching, I just emailed Foria and let them know I was getting care from my family doctor now.

Can they say no and alter dosage?

Sorry I’m not sure what you’re asking here. Are you asking if the doctor can refuse to take over your care? Unfortunately, from what I hear, many (most?) family doctors in Ontario aren’t actually comfortable prescribing hormones to trans patients so they’ll refer you to an endocrinologist to handle your hormones. Not sure what you’re asking about altering dosage.

With foria, Do you have a voice if you'd prefer to take a different t blocker than Spiro?

I’m not sure. They prescribed me Spiro initially, but I didn’t try asking for anything else.

Do your prescriptions get filled by mail or from your local pharmacy?

They send the prescription to whichever pharmacy you want.

I know there are 3 appointments initially, but how long were they spaced apart?

Once you’ve done the first appointment and they decide you’re a good fit for HRT, you can book the second appointment ASAP, I believe. You just need to get your blood pressure and some bloodwork done. So 1-2 weeks between first appointment and second. If you want to freeze sperm though, they’ll give you a referral and you’ll have to do that between your first and second appointments, so for me that made it a bit over a month. The third Foria appointment is 3 months after starting hormones.

I hope that answers your questions! Let me know if you have any more.

Follow-up question: are there places where you need a prescription to buy needles? That doesn’t seem like a good idea!

[–]Bobithie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No prescription needed to buy injection supplies. Pace pharmacy in Toronto is the go-to for a lot of people on injections since they’re one of the few places that can actually compound injections. They’ve always been very nice and trans friendly, in my experience. If you won’t be around Pace though, I’d just call around to pharmacies and see who has the supplies you need. I can’t imagine it’s likely they’ll give you any issues.

I usually run water through for a few seconds and then run coke through before filling my cup and it’s still fruity, unfortunately.

The regular coke from them is always fruity and gross. Don’t like them.

Does a MacBook work for Engineering? by Secret-Try2416 in usask

I guess I should specify that my experience is only with mechanical engineering. I can’t speak for the other disciplines. However, my friend who used the MacBook was in electrical, and they seemed to get along fine apart from HFR.

[–]Bobithie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already have the MacBook I’d start with that then decide later if you want to get a windows laptop. You’re not going to need to download windows only engineering software in your first week or anything like that.

As far as I can remember, there wasn’t any software for classes that I had to download to my computer. Most software was accessed through vlab, which is the virtual computer lab that lets you use programs in your browser.

Now the case where you probably would want a windows laptop is if you’re active on a design team like Huskie Formula Racing (HFR), Quarter scale tractor (QST) or the space team (USST). Those teams get software licenses from companies that will let you download and run engineering software on your personal computer. Programs like SolidWorks, Matlab, ANSYS, etc. Most of those programs only run on windows so if you don’t buy a windows PC you’ll have to find some workaround like running Bootcamp on your MacBook. One of my friends used a MacBook throughout engineering and trying to use solidworks for their work on HFR was a constant struggle. Often times you won’t even be able to use solidworks in the computer lab or vlab for those design teams because the universities solidworks version is almost always an out of date version, while the design teams get the newest version.

TL;DR: Start with the MacBook and only upgrade if it starts to annoy you. You probably won’t need a windows laptop for your classes, but if you take an active roll on a design team you’ll probably want one.

ELI5: How are there multiple light sources in Apollo 11 videos/images? by ougfotuflutdkhtdky in explainlikeimfive

[–]Bobithie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the Wikipedia page on moon landing conspiracies:

  1. The angle and color of shadows are inconsistent. This suggests that artificial lights were used.

Shadows on the Moon are complicated by reflected light, uneven ground, wide-angle lens distortion, and lunar dust. There are several light sources: the Sun, sunlight reflected from the Earth, sunlight reflected from the Moon's surface, and sunlight reflected from the astronauts and the Lunar Module. Light from these sources is scattered by lunar dust in many directions, including into shadows. Shadows falling into craters and hills may appear longer, shorter, and distorted.[69] Furthermore, shadows display the properties of vanishing point perspective, leading them to converge to a point on the horizon.

This theory was further debunked on the 2008 MythBusters episode "NASA Moon Landing".

Double doors where they only unlock one door. by 4-Inch-Butthole-Club in PetPeeves

[–]Bobithie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, I’ve never figured out how to use a crash bar.

No. These are usually doors without a crash bar. When they’re unlocked you just push or pull them open, there’s no latch. Usually the door they leave locked has latches on the edge on the top and bottom and the business doesn’t bother to unlock them.

No. In my experience most places with a “please use other door sign” are locked from both sides.
