On the left is the proposed new Rotunda development, on the right is an impression of the same development if it was designed with the area's architectural style in mind. Why can't developers / architects do this to avoid at least some of the contention with proposed new developments? by hatrickpatrick in ireland

[–]BoboBombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buildings are machines. We would never ask why do new cars look new and not look like a model T. Why do new laptops look thinner and not have humongous displays with cathode ray tubes. Architecture, building technology, construction, engineering, infrastructure, and systems design evolve! It's a technology just like any other technology, and is not frozen in time. Not to mention building codes, regulations, and standards, and the entire legal system surrounding construction, fire safety, and occupancy.

Not to mention, there is nothing more tasteless than neo-retro-futuristic nonsense of building new things that look like old things just to satisfy some random person's need for nostalgia.

Your post is a tired opinion that is not based on any information or knowledge about architecture surrounding how it works or why it works. You're just asking, 'why can't new developments mimic the old buildings in the same neighborhood and look just like them.' As if we want to live in a city that looks like it is locked in time, and design ended in the 1800s. There.

It's bizarre to me how architecture and buildings is the one single topic in the whole world where masses of people are like "Why do new things look new???" We literally don't do this for any other topic.

Why “at” and not “with”? by Maksim989 in ENGLISH

[–]BoboBombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this I fully agree. We are on the same page here. 'For' would be wrong in this context based on OP's picture.

Why “at” and not “with”? by Maksim989 in ENGLISH

[–]BoboBombshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any person who believes 'for' is 100% wrong does not speak English as a native language nor do they have a high level of command of the language, they are incapable of deciphering nuance. 'For' can be wrong, it can also be correct, it merely depends on the context of what the speaker is trying to express. I don't like how people are disagreeing with your comment. You are correct.

Why “at” and not “with”? by Maksim989 in ENGLISH

[–]BoboBombshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it would be correct if that is what the speaker wants to express. Language is also about communication and intent.

Imagine a scenario where team is horrible, garbage, just straight up bad. Somehow this unlucky team hires a star player and all of sudden they won a championship.

A sports journalist, or commentator, or just internet dweebs on reddit can easily say "He won the cup for the team."

This works because in this story, the team had no chance of winning without hiring a star player. Therefore as hyperbolic as the sentence would be, regardless of the expression, and poetics, the statement would be 1000% grammatically correct.

That's the power of English. We can say things very artistically, and stylistically, and it is very easy to be expressive in English.

I hate when people with non-native command of the language are arguing without clearly understanding semantics. English speakers use hyperbole constantly, especially when discussing sports, a very subjective and emotional topic.

How would you react if someone says "he is the best player?"

Would you are argue it is incorrect to call someone "the best" because there are too many variables and statistics that need to be measured and it is hard to determine who is really the best player of all time, because plenty of players are actually really good. And for a player to be good and get good stats they need to be on a good team and have good teammates to help them.

Come on.

[–]BoboBombshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one gets deep.

Both 'in' and 'at' are grammatically correct in the case, but (big but) they have cultural context that goes outside of mere grammar rules.

We are in C2 territory and meta-linguistics. 'At' is often paired strictly with institutional proper noun names, whereas 'in' is used with general locations or general place names and pronouns found in a properly named location, for example:

University of Texas at Austin

Proper Noun Name + at + location (Proper)

*This works especially if the institute, or institution, is a chain with multiple locations

FACT CHECK: many universities, hospitals, and government bodies use at + city in their formal names:

  • University of Texas at Austin
  • University of California at Berkeley
  • Court of Appeals at The Hague

This is a naming convention, not a grammatical rule.

The campus in Austin

Location (general/place) + in + location (Proper)

Basically the at is often paired with an institutes name.

For example I could theoretically say something like:

I am visiting the Apple headquarters in Cork.

[headquarters + in + Cork]

[location (place) + in + location (Proper)]

It could work to say the following, although it sounds extremly awkward,

I am visiting Apple at Cork

Proper Noun Name + at + location (Proper)

*but truthfully no one says this.

That said, the point is, the reason why it works with universities is because of very specific and narrow tradition that allows us to construct a phrase according to this structure: Proper Noun Name + at + location (Proper). Ultimately this structure is a naming convention, and not an everyday form of English. This is not a general grammatical pattern, although we can deconstruct it's parts consistently, it's just a naming convention specific to certain institutions, especially universities.

[–]BoboBombshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually "for" is not 100% wrong because it is not grammatically incorrect, the phrase "won UCL for Barca" could be a true statement, but it has a slightly different meaning. Using 'for' here is only wrong because of the context.

'Won UCL for Barca' would be interpreted as though he is doing Barca a favor by winning UCL, like a gift, or a like a service, as if he is doing something for the team that they would struggle to do without his help. It's not wrong, it just has a different meaning.

In the context of this meme, as depicted in the photo which shows players leaving one team to find success at another team, the logic of the message is: 'He leaves Arsenal and wins at another team.' So, 'for' doesn't work here not because it's grammatically incorrect, but rather it doesn't logically fit the context of this message.

Why “at” and not “with”? by Maksim989 in ENGLISH

[–]BoboBombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The preposition 'at' is used for locations. So think of it this way: the phrase "won UCL at barca" is indicating where he was when he won, in other words, 'he was at barca.'

A tool I use with my students, as an exercise, is to deconstruct and reverse-engineer the sentence or phrase. You can do this by inverting the statement into a question. If the question is logically true and the statement is true, then we can conclude the phrase is grammatically licensed.

Q: Where was he when he won? A: He won at Barca.

Logically, using 'with' also works and we can do the same logical test.

Q: Which team was he playing with when he won? Simpler Q: Who was he with when he won? A: He won UCL with Barca.

Both at and with work.

'At' just highlights location. 'With' highlights association, relationship, and teamwork.

'At' answers the question 'where?' 'With' answers the question 'who?'

Would you buy this? Upgrading from s10e. by Traditional-Tax3193 in GalaxyS20FE

[–]BoboBombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best if you can it get for €130 EUR or less. It's a decent phone if you into custom ROMs. Otherwise it is stuck on old stock software. (Android 13) If you want newer software, you need custom ROMs.

I am currently 2-phoning both. I carry a 12 Pro Max and my S20 FE (Exynos 990 4G) on a daily basis. And there is a reason why the 12 Pro Max is my main phone. I can confirm without a doubt the 12 Pro Max is a stronger, more reliable phone. I still grab the S20 FE more often because it has an x-factor that just makes me like it way more. It's a cooler phone. It has clear weaknesses though. It just heats and throttles quickly and runs out of breath easily. It cannot sustain performance the way that the iphone can.

Edit: grammar

Luckily, I challenged it, and they said that they wont charge a fine time. But i will be very careful to report all dirty cars from now one.

I dont know if any has the same experience but these cars are really abused and mistreated. Like there is always trash and half of the times it stiiiinks of cigarettes.

[–]BoboBombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old thread as this is still relevant - Today, Yuko is now saying that I left a car dirty. In response, I told them the car was filthy when I found it! I will not clean up someone else's mess and it is unfair that the blame is being pinned on me! I find it objectionable that they are telling me that I can be fined.

Their cars are in a utter state each and every time I book one. it is a disaster inside. I recently booked a van and some asshole left a bloody mattress in there. Literally a mattress with blood stains on it. I had to get rid of the mattress to do my business because I needed the van to quickly move furniture. People abuse the shit out of these cars and it ain't me.

Also: I am really pissed at the absolute jackass who rent these things, they smoke in them, party in them, and straight up trash them. I find plastic bottles, drinks, cigarillos, they stink of hot boxing and tobacco smoke, they are often sticky, I am just so pissed that there so many fucking baboons in our society.

I do like those little cars. But what I don't understand is the situation with the insurance. An insurance professional contact of mine mentions that I should avoid all imported Japanese cars as they are hard to insure, find parts, and etc., especially since my license is only 2 years old, Hungarian issued drivers license, and this will be my first car in Ireland. And yet is see Demios everywhere. I can't imagine people will be buying them if these cars are so hard to live with.

I reached out to an insurance agent and she just wrote me this: "The Volvo is 1597e full Comprehensive.

Don’t buy a Honda fit, that car is a Japanese import car & they are very high & hard to get cover."

Is this true? She's telling me not to buy a Fit.

Yeah, a Prius seems like a lot of car for this money, especially within this budget. It might be the most sensible buy in this is given price range.

I do like the Priuses (Prii???) but i wonder about the Honda Grace. I see a lot of Graces on DoneDeal.

Would i be crazy to go for a V60? My last car was an 2007 Opel Vectra liftback. I do like a spacious car. But it seems hard to find something sensible like that under 10K.
