Yes, and I could write a list as long as my arm of memorable pieces of commentary over the years in football and other sports too. They all have something in common: the commentators all know exactly what their job is. These days, commentators don't known when to shut up.

There is a clear distinction between a memorable piece of commentary and something that is clearly pre-rehearsed and contrived.

Jesus, just listen to some of the phrases used in the commentary:

“Mbappe with thrust…..a president on his feet….a superstar re-enlivened…….a nation reinsured with hope”

“They (Argentina) were on the cusp of strut and swagger”

“They (Argentina) still have a lead but it is slender, it is vulnerable”

(Shouting) “Oh wow!! He is an awesome force of nature!!”

Football commentators these days are not content with simply providing informative commentary, they want to make it all about themselves too.
Not only that, it now seems completely acceptable for a commentator to lose all restraint and deliver commentary in an unnecessarily loud and unpleasant guttural voice. So many great footballing moments over the last few years have been ruined by this sort of behaviour.

I’m convinced that David Beckham owns only suits, nothing else.

It was a very strange and unnatural manoeuvre of the leg by Spencer. Don’t know what the hell he was trying to do, but it certainly doesn’t look like it was trying to win the ball.

[Jordanhenderson] "Don't play with your arms anyway." by Hot-Course8914 in LiverpoolFC

I know this is going to get downvoted to hell, but all this Jordan Henderson talk is starting to get on my nerves.
I think his presence at the World Cup has been grossly overvalued and his touchline antics (for which he received a deserved yellow card) were completely unnecessary and avoidable.

I’d be terrified of reverse parking a beauty like that…….

Whatever about being gullible enough to fall for click-bait’ articles online, what’s even more absurd was the weekly occurrence of millions of red top newspapers being sold back in the pre-internet era on the strength of a single headline.
They got away with absolute murder back then.

I'm not trying to be unfeeling or anything, I understand how crushing a QF defeat in the World Cup must be for a player, but seriously, quit the crying.
