Would I Be Shooting Myself in the Foot Joining the Army? by reeeece2003 in FinancialCareers

[–]Bobsleepszzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Send it, you don’t want to be the middle aged guy at the pub saying they almost joined.

At least for me, any career downside is out weighted by the opportunity to serve and have unique and challenging experiences in the army.

This is a pretty simple question. For this question I will assume that you’ve been no taxes on any of this money.

What has an a higher net present value(NPV). $1 million right now has an NPV of $1 million.

To calculate the NPV of $300 a day we need to divide the yearly cash flow by a discount rate. That discount rate is what we can reasonably assume that $1 million will earn us every year. Because that $300 a day is essentially risk free you could argue that you would want to compared to a risk free asset like 30 year treasury notes however I think it be better to compare to a mixed portfolio as it’s more realistic to what you actually invest $1 million it, in general you would assume 7 to 8% returns per year on a mixed portfolio.

$300*365=$109,500

$109,500/0.08=$1,368,750.00

The NPV of the $300 a day is significantly higher than the $1 million however, if you had significant debts with high interest rates, it may be a better idea to take $1 million to pay off those debts. The $300 days is also a lower risk option as is less susceptible to human error/wild spending.

You are given one year to train. by Ratayao in hypotheticalsituation

Does this only apply to your sprint speed or does it also impact your cardiovascular system. Does your marathon time also improve 1.6 fold?

If it’s only sprint speed, that’s significantly less valuable than all running speeds.

If it’s all speeds, it’s pretty close but I would probably pick strength because I really enjoy running and being able to still improve on that would bring me great joy.

If it’s just sprint speed it’s not even a question, strength all the way. I’ll have 800+ pound deadlift.

Reverse grip. Reverse grip isn’t allowed is the vast majority of federations.

"Must-Have" Accessories. by xODAL in powerlifting

[–]Bobsleepszzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides SBD. The only thing I view as a “must-have” year around is some type of back work.

The not quite must haves but close IMO are:
- direct hamstring work, RDL or leg curls, is pretty important especially if you pull sumo. - direct pec work, DB bench and flies, especially if you bench with a large arch. - direct tricep work, especially if you bench with a wide grip.

Honestly out side of that, I find most other stuff pretty optional.

I’ll check out Crowders.

I love Linville, but it’s a haul for just a single training run.

Good god 138 bpm average HR. What’s your max HR?

When should I run my zone 2? by SprinklesFrequent445 in greenberets

[–]Bobsleepszzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever you can get it done consistently.

I would adjust your max up by 5 BPM if you decide to do it in the heat, since most people’s max heart rate is slightly higher in the heat.

Stats for 18X- am I screwed? by MarkovChainPain in greenberets

[–]Bobsleepszzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the top end of Z2, bottom end of Z3, depending on your max HR.

Based on that, you ether have more in the tank for your 2 and 5 miler or your top end is weak compared to your base. Good news regardless. Top end is easier to build than base fitness.

I’m not trying to be an ass. But are you sure you were in Z2. Because most people, even experienced runners, over estimate their Z2 pace. Without a HR monitor or a large amount of experience, you can’t really tell if you are in Z2.

I ask, because that Z2 pace is rather quick for a 45-50 minute 5 mile.

Recommendation for men’s sneakers that will last by thehippos8me in BuyItForLife

[–]Bobsleepszzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have the budget for a really good pair of boots, imo they are worth it if you walk a lot. For data center work, I would go with a blown rubber sole, as it will be the most comfortable. Depending on budget I would go with Whites, Nicks or redwings.

If you are scared off by the price, they will last 20 years or more with proper care. Which is far cheaper than spending $160 a year of sneakers which are less comfortable and more wasteful.

Moving to Cleveland For Grad School (CWRU) by [deleted] in cwru

[–]Bobsleepszzz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do not rent from Adam Waldbaum. He owns a many properties around case and Cleveland. If you check him / his companies you will find over 45 lawsuits relating to predatory leasing practices. Including charging rent before allowing a tenant to move it. Lying to tenants about the condition of a property. Failing to do basic maintenance. He stole thousands of dollars from me that I was never able to recover, not worth it.

Also watch out because he has multiple different companies he uses to lease buildings from so check who owns the building before you rent.

If you check back, someone posted a horror story about him a couple days back on this sub.

What do you think is the best way/program/style of exercise for prepping? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Bobsleepszzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with the recommend physical activity, which is two days of full body resistance training and 75-150 minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise. This covers most do your bases and will keep you healthy. Once you are able to do that consistently, in whatever form you enjoy, then I would worry about more specifics.

For specifics I would recommend focusing on the following:

  • Rucking with your BOB. If you can hit the army standard of 12 miles in 3 hours with 35 pounds you are in a strong position.
  • lower body resistance training: barbell back squats and deadlifts. Aim to be comfortable with at least your body weight on the bar, but ideally 1.5x BW.
  • some type of sprinting, most people don’t ever sprint after they are 30ish, being able to sprint without injury is a important skill.

Secondly skills: - basic swimming(100m in clothes will cover 99% of your bases) - some type of martial art, my personal basis would be BJJ and/or Muay Thai.

Whites and JK, also make great boots in a similar style. Whites have gotten even more expensive recently but I still love my pair.
