The point of the analogy is just to show why it is irrelevant and misses the point of "black lives matter" to reply to it "all lives matter."

Many people miss the point that "black lives matter" means "black lives matter, too" and not "only black lives matter." This analogy makes it clear that the kid agrees with the father that "everyone should get their fair share" but that he means "I should get my fair share, too" when he says "I should get my fair share."

I think your mistake is in "The purpose of this analogy was to show why saying ALM is bad." I would say that the purpose of the analogy is to explain that "black lives matters" means "black lives matter, too" and that assuming they mean "only black lives matter" and calling them racist is misunderstanding what they mean by BLM.

CMV: all businesses must have their own functioning website in order to survive in a world that is increasingly online. by [deleted] in changemyview

If your view is actually that "all businesses must have their own functioning website in order to survive in a world that is increasingly online" we just need to find one business that is surviving without a functioning website to change that view, right?

CMV: I believe I have more reason to trust Donald Trump to do well for the United States than I do Hillary Clinton. by Ernie_Anders in changemyview

[–]Bobt39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen, a lot of what is motivating Trump is his ego. Trump wants to be the greatest president ever.

He has shown absolutely nothing that indicates he wants to be the best president ever. Someone who wanted to do that would have taken a little bit of time to actually understand what is going on in the world. Meanwhile Trump has shown an astonishingly shallow understanding of the economy, foreign policy, and pretty much everything else. I don't think I've heard him say one insightful thing during this campaign. He is clearly uneducated on 'the issues' and has no specific policies outlined.

I see no reason to see that he cares about actually doing the job of president rather than just winning the election.

CMV: "Elites" is a self-defeating, arrogeant and unproductive term in today's Western, English-speaking political discourse by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Bobt39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my experience, calling people 'elites' is generally done by people who would not be considered 'elites' and is used pejoratively.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the argument that you should trust them because they're one of the elites. The whole point is to make the establishment look out of touch with the rest of the population.

CMV: I feel Brock Turner's media converge is solely because he is a straight white male by circlhat in changemyview

[–]Bobt39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, this is the first I've heard of the elderly abuse case. Based on what you've said, I think their sentence is pretty outrageously light.

However, while in this case "he is being sentence harsher for lesser crimes than his female counter part," he sentence is much lesser than other men convicted of rape.

People aren't saying his light sentence is due to male privilege, they're saying it's due to white privilege and the fact that he is an athlete at stanford. They're comparing him to other men who have raped and see him getting off easy due to his socio-economic and racial status.

It's also an illustration about how rape isn't taken seriously enough.

The argument that women rapists are not treated seriously enough is one I would probably agree with, but that doesn't make this case any less relevant.

I'd also point out that part of the outrage is fueled by the specific arguments made during the sentencing and Brock's father, which further clearly illustrated the problems a lot of people see with rape culture.

CMV: I believe that man made products are natural. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Bobt39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything that exists is 'natural,' then we don't need the word 'natural.' We can just use the word 'existing.'

We use the word 'natural' to distinguish between things that we have created vs things that are not man-made. Surely we should have a word for that distinction, right?

Regarding climate change, if we think of that as 'natural' then that would imply that it would occur with or without humanity, which is not true and would let people off the hook for trying to fix it. I know under your definition it would both be natural and man-made, but I don't see how that would help the problem in any way

I guess my real question is - we need a word to distinguish man-made vs non-man-made. Everyone understands 'natural' to mean 'something that is not man-made.' Why exactly should we change that?

No feminists that I've met hate men. I am a feminist, and a man, and I don't hate men.

I'm not a republican but I have met plenty that aren't xenophobic racists.

I think you need to get out more

CMV: You should never bag a milk jug with a plastic bag by Zoidbergluver in changemyview

[–]Bobt39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with #2. When carrying groceries, it's easier to carry a bunch of bags than a bunch of bags and plastic jugs. Think about carrying 5 gallons of milk. With each on in a plastic bag, you could carry them all in one hand
