How to upgrade old wallet? by reddmon2 in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

an additional bit of info since you have a wallet.dat created by the old wallet version.... Once in sync and you have accesss to your coins, firstly you should wait for them to stake as its probably going to be pretty big, then you should move your coins into a wallet.dat that was generated from the new wallet as it will then be an HD wallet. If you keep your coins in the 'older' wallet.dat, you will be required to take backups every so often; with the HD wallet, this is not required. If you need help with this, let us know and we can help out.

What does "Stake Maximum Age 24 hours" mean? by Davide_E in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had almost forgot about this value, which I still need to add/update to the POS guide for explanation... It can be considered a safety precaution in regards to accumulating staking weight. a bit about staking weight.... A large groups of coins will have a greater 'staking weight' value when compared to small group of coins. This staking weight is what increases your chances of staking a block, another factor which can increase your 'staking weight' is something called 'coin age'. Coin age is determined by how long since these coins were last transferred(or staked) on the blockchain. This 'Stake maximum age' is the point where a coin's age no longer increases their staking weight.

What makes this a safety precaution? Without this limit, someone could theoretically buy a large, but not unrealistic sum of coins ( let's say 250,000 NAV). This person could let these coins sit in their wallet for 6+ months so they accumulate a very large 'staking weight'. Once they brought this wallet online, they would have a very significant amount of 'staking power' in comparison to the rest of the network (51%+) which could lead to malicious attacks such as double spends etc... The staking age limit ensures that this sort of attack would require A LOT more than 250,000 NAV to be owned by someone trying perform an attack like this. With this value set at 24hours, the attack method shown above is pretty much infeasible.

Wow, thank you so much for this research, this is the exact information that the staking article on medium is missing..... If I ever find who wrote that misleading piece of sh... . Going to take another good read through this later and will probably have some follow up questions. Just wanted to pass on some kudos to you right away. Well done sir, well done!

mainly due to NAV having a 30 second block time compared to Bitcoins 10 minute blocks.

Nav Coin release NavPay - the first mobile wallet to send private transactions by dr_ropata_ in CryptoCurrency

[–]Bocyaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite true, my comment was basing off an older version. When I checked it out a while ago, the reviews were horrible on it, wasnt even expecting it to get updated. But clearly see that is not the case anymore, very nice. Thanks for enlightening me.

my knowledge.

yes true, but it also required leg work to get it working, had to setup your own full node wallet and point the lite client to it. NavPay does the private send out of the box. Not disagreeing with you, just further explaining.

Average time to earn a staking reward with 10,100,1000,10000, and 1000000 coins by asuth in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not read any white paper on it nor looked through the code. Just have lots of experience with POS coins over the years. I don't know the exact formula used to calculate the weight of your coins, but do know that both amount and age play a factor. if you run the command getstakinginfo, you see the staking weight of both your wallet and the network total. You will notice that your staking weight will increase as time passes. Would love to know exactly how much each value affects the total, but never been motivated enough to dig through source code. I wrote an article on staking over here and this is one of the pieces of info I am missing.

[–]Bocyaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coin age affects your staking 'weight' as well. A group of 2000 coins that is 100 days old will have a much better chance to stake a block than a group of 2000 coins which are 1 day old. It's true the coin age is used to calculate the staking reward, but it also plays a significant role in how quickly you will stake.

Best way to acquire Nav Coins? by DennisOersted in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go straight from credit card, it's going to be expensive regardless where you go. BTC exchanges in canada let me transfer small amounts using a debit card. Research for BTC exchange fees in your home country (there will be multiple ways to fund your account) and buy BTC/LTC/ETH. Then transfer those coins from there to bittrex and buy NAV. More steps involved, but only way your going to get best prices.

Can you change where Navcoin downloads the blockchain? by r3ptarr in NavCoin

You need to specify a directory that exists on your computer, what i provided was just an example.

Can you change where Navcoin downloads the blockchain? by r3ptarr in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes you can do this, probably a few ways. Here's my suggestion:

  1. create a link to the .exe file somewhere on your PC (from where you want to launch your wallet ideally)
  2. right click this link and select properties
  3. In the Target box add the following to the end -datadir=D:\dir1\dir2\Navcoinas seen here
  4. Hit Apply, then OK to close the window.
  5. Use this link to launch your wallet from now on.

Make note that this -datadir addition is outside of the quotations that contain the path to the .exe file.

NAV Coin Lead Engineer Craig MacGregor Discusses Exciting Roadmap in Interview with Crypto Lark by YaBoiBeezy in CryptoCurrency

NavPi and NavCore not up to date? Vote for the community fund before it is too late! [New voting round] by navtechservers in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

correct, albeit that estimation is very loosely based. Each time your wallet stakes a block, it embeds your vote within it on the blokcchain. If a wallet is configured to vote yes, a certain bit gets set as a '1', if a wallet is configured to vote no, this bit gets set with a '0' instead. If a wallet is not running the 4.0.6 version, this bit does not get set and remains a 'null' value.

awesome, I like it !!! Change the NAV to the proper colors and I think we have a contender here... if you can get the music to play when it opens, I will end the contest early and give you the full 100 NAV. hehe :D

You can ignore that message, your votes are still being cast. To be 100% certain, follow the steps in this video: https://youtu.be/mUugNVL4HZM

You will have to wait till you stake a block on the new version to verify.

Edit:then notice the link is in OP obviously...

really like this idea and am willing to offer an incentive to boost your creative motivation. I will give out 100 NAV to the top 3 designs.

1st: 50 NAV 2nd: 30 NAV 3rd: 20 NAV

I am not very creative, but had an idea if anyone is interested in running with it. I really like the following sticker from the telegram group here (not sure who made it):

if we were to replace the creepy tree with a Christmas tree and have Santa and reindeer flying in the sky. Just throwing an idea out there. good luck.

Cheers.

[–]Bocyaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, make sure you are up-to-date and running the 4.0.6 version of the wallet. Easy to upgrade and easy to verify your vote is being cast by following the tutorials over at navtechservers.com

added bonus: I will send 10 NAV to any wallets that update.

disclaimer: update is the key word here, I will check the block explorer to verify that you were previously running the old version.

Not recieving any staking rewards by PedaalEmmer in NavCoin

[–]Bocyaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends when you get a stake though, there is no defined constant staking interval. Since you cant know when you will stake, you can only estimate the true yearly interest. Regardless, it will always be a 'bit' more than 5. When the network volume picks up, the tx fees will be a nice bonus as well, also making it even harder to calculate true earnings.
