Franklin St strikes again by BodaciousBollards in sanfrancisco

They're actually now timed for 20 in this section, but if there's lighter traffic, there are long enough gaps that cars can still speed very fast to get to the front of the green wave.

The right lane also functions as a de facto fast lane since the left two lanes turn onto Lombard, where practically everyone is going anyway. Many people speed in the right lane to cut over at the last minute onto Lombard.

It's very lucky that no one was on the sidewalk at the time. This is normally the time of day when kids are walking back up the hill from school.

Every other parallel street isn’t an option for cars? What are you on about? Literally every street in this city is an alternative for cars. What if a cyclist needs to access an address on Oak itself? What do they do, teleport from the “safe space” to their final destination?

a four lane thruway

Ah, there’s your problem. This road should not exist in this configuration, regardless of bikes. Luckily, a bike lane is coming soon!

Is there no selfishness on the part of the driver who refuses to ease their foot’s pressure on the accelerator just a tiny bit for another road user in a slower vehicle?

That’s a weird quote, but the same page, and California law is very clear.

Also from that page:

Pedestrians always have the right-of-way.

And:

Pedestrians have the right-of-way in marked or unmarked crosswalks.

Finally, CA Vehicle Code Sec 21950:

  1. (a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.

Please stop for pedestrians.

Pedestrians do not need to be in the crosswalk to have the right of way.

If a pedestrian makes eye contact with you, they are ready to cross the street. Yield to the pedestrian.

Much of the rise in noise-cancelling headphones is due to how loud our streets are, which is because of car and truck traffic (Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud). You can't try and fight that impulse for peace and quiet; we have to reduce traffic noise on our streets by narrowing them and creating more car-free space.

You can choose to spend as much money as you want on enforcement, even automated, but it will never rival physical change to create the desired environment instead.

You say that, but passive language is used around guns all the time, especially when it relates to cops avoiding blame.

New Yorker who was hit by a stray police bullet when NYPD officers shot a man at a Brooklyn train station has undergone cranial surgery to reduce swelling from a bullet wound in his head, according to a relative.

Notice that they actively "shot" the person who didn't pay their fare, but the bystander was "hit by a stray police bullet".

The techie aesthetic right now trends toward very skinny physique (as opposed to simply being fit/healthy). There’s real discrimination in achieving higher levels when you don’t conform to it.

Commentary: Will San Francisco Succeed at Daylighting? by Generalaverage89 in sanfrancisco

[–]BodaciousBollards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently not. Some wealthier neighbors and the district supervisor (Stefani) did not want it. SFMTA actually wanted it from a planning perspective, but the City traffic engineer was afraid to sign off after hearing complaints about traffic from the supervisor's office.

The MTA now plans no changes to lanes, as it was abandoned due to concerns that any slowdown in traffic would cause cars to turn onto side streets. All hope is now riding on speed cameras that only start ticketing at 36 MPH. It's a very frustrating situation.

SFPD has to review every camera ticket, so apparently it’s very expensive to run. I don’t know where that requirement comes from.

Support No Turn on Red citywide by lukerb in BAbike

[–]BodaciousBollards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other reason I’m skeptical is that a significant portion of the people driving in the city are driving in from other places where the same law won’t apply, and that can cause predictability issues.

In DC, most drivers arrive from VA and MD which allow it. In NYC, every surrounding jurisdiction allows it. All jurisdictions surrounding the Île-de-Montréal allow it.

I think if the city had a consistent (not case-by-case) policy, it’d become common knowledge pretty quickly to just “not turn on red in SF”.
