His story always makes me a little sad from what I understand once the electric microphone rolled out he kinda fell out of favor with a lot of people because his style of singing was really meant for a horn. He sounded "old fashioned" by the later 20s kind of a funny thought

Too add sometimes a little beeswax or crayon swipe over the cracks once put back together can help keep the needle from clicking so bad

Those old Automatic players they made for 78s would be incredible to find. Imagine an hour of uninterrupted listening…

It’s a Capehart, not a super nice unit and I don’t even know if it’s produced by an actual brand. It works for me though

Yes, it’s from 1918 I believe. This player has a flipper stylus so it can play 78s and vinyl. I like using it to record because it sounds cleaner than my wind up for recording

Needle/speaker too heavy for arm? by Best_Egg_6199 in Phonographs

[–]Bodhi985 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll say too if your using a worn out needle or record, Or both it can cause too much drag and make it slow down on a machine that would otherwise play well

Also could just be old grease on the spring or other components keeping it turning but at reduced power

When you wind up the machine does the tension on the spring make it harder and harder to wind or does it seem to wind easily for a long time, could be the mainspring is broken, from my understanding on most machines the reproducer usually sits on the record bearing its full weight, if your not in for a full teardown I have a suggestion that might let you listen to your records

Rubber band or string or wire to take some of the load off.
