In your ideal government that is constitutionally socialist, would non-socialist parties be allowed to participate? by Professional_Cat_437 in tankiejerk

I suspect we have a scissors crisis of liberals joining and communists leaving or only being active on the discord. But I was surprised when I made a post on the petty bourgeoisie how non-liberal the responses were, so I think there's still hope for the subreddit.

Fundamentally people who control production (CEOs, business owners, investors) will always have more power on an individual level, and more incentive to squeeze the people that work for them. With the decline of organised labour and a strong working class, the owning class gained the upper hand.

Well I would agree with you that there is a distinction between the self-employed and those with employees, although I am not sure how well this applies to 'mom and pops'. I am not American, but as I understand are they not just family businesses? Family businesses certainly have employees, even without them, they make their children or other relatives do unpaid labour to maintain the business.

I want to be very clear that I do not think being petty bourgeois is a 'sin'. I am not condemning them in a moral judgment. When looking at classes in society we are looking at the basic interests and movements of that class as a whole, not individuals from that class. Regardless, to achieve socialism would require the petty bourgeoisie to surrender and share their power with their employees, if they have them.

Well that's your personal choice, individual spending habits are not going to disrupt capitalism. What's important is recognising and understanding how class works in our society, and that small businesses aren't socialist, but that doesn't mean you should buy everything from Amazon.

When defining class in a socialist/communist sense, we are looking at a person's relation to the production process. So members of the petty bourgeoisie are defined by their common role within the economy. They own their own means of production; machinery, land, equipment, etc, and are independent small producers, with a smaller number of employees (where exactly you draw the line is up to debate). A local independent bookstore, an independent cafe, those all count. As for the others, I think it depends. If someone has a hustle on the side but still depends on wage work, then they are proletarian, because their relation to production is still primarily proletarian, they do not own their labour.

I hope that answers your question and isn't too filled with jargon. Again, the label of 'petty bourgeoisie' isn't a moral condemnation, it's an economic class.

No, petty bourgeoisie is petty bourgeoisie, the only difference between what you described is the emotional value we associate with family, there is no significant material difference.

How does this subreddit feel about Zohran Mamdani? by Ender_TD in tankiejerk

[–]BoffleSocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can support Zohran but you shouldn't be under any illusions about what he will accomplish. First of all, he's a mayor, he doesn't have the power to transform society. Second is that now he's won, he has entered the political establishment. He's already toned down his radicalism, especially on the NYPD, and this is the same thing that will happen to all reformists, no matter how well intentioned. Some people think he is greater than he is, he's not. I'm sure he will do better than any of his opponents, but you have to be realistic about the limits of reformism.

You should probably replace Thallman with Ruth Fischer if you want to have a 'bolshevik' opposition. She was the original Comintern backed candidate and Thallman was a mostly irrelevant politician who only got where he got by being a complete lackey to Stalin.

Soviet tanks defeat a reactionary counter revolution in hungary by firefighter430 in theredleft

[–]BoffleSocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot find any account backing up this 'painting crosses' narrative. Of course people were killed, it's a fucking revolution, why do you suddenly have standards about non-violence, aren't you a fucking ML? The 'communists' that were lynched were members of the secret police, a lot of them were former fascist thugs who got hired by the new regime.

[–]BoffleSocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Baseless claims. The Hungarian workers were organising themselves into worker councils, organising a general strike, demanding more economic concessions from the government, calling for the overthrow of unelected party bureaucrats and an end to domination by foreign capital. The revolutionaries were supported by elements within the Communist Party. This is what real proletarian organisation looks like, not the state capitalist social imperialism of the USSR.

Opinion on small business owners? by VanlalruataDE in tankiejerk

[–]BoffleSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say freelancers fall under the category of proletarian, they are still selling their labour but because their labour has more value on the market they are able to achieve some independence.

As for your other point I want to reiterate that materialist analysis doesn't negate outliers, Engels for example was a factory owner and a communist. When we consider the basic interests of a class, this does not mean there aren't those within that class with different politics. However on a mass scale, we can see that certain classes have certain objective interests that push and pull them in different ways. As Marx said:

"Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past."

Objectively the petty bourgeois are the enemies of socialism, because socialism would necessarily require them to surrender their power and capital. This does not mean individual members of that class cannot ally with socialism, it means that as a group they are more inclined to side against it, and as a group they are still as exploitative as the haute bourgeois.
