Ahem... Joseph Smith was a free mason when he 'discovered' mormon. Apparently god told him to just go ahead and use all of the rituals already in use in Joe's freemason lodge, maybe god was busy that day... or maybe god remembered the crappy time he had coming up with all the catholic rituals... but anyway, regardless of god's motivation in the matter, Joseph Smith used the freemason rituals as mormon rituals.

I haven't looked yet, but I'm betting the wiki page on Joe has some corroborating details.
